This curtain panel is an open diamond lattice in soft sage green. Doubled strands of yarn cross to form tall diamonds, and a small knot sits at each point where they meet. The light comes through every opening, so the panel filters sun without blocking the view.
The panel is a single rectangle with three parts. A firm band of single crochet runs across the top as the header. Below it hangs the knotted lattice. A narrow single crochet border runs down both long sides and across the bottom, finished with a small scalloped edge. The design is simple and airy, and it suits a cottage-style or garden-style room.
All instructions use US crochet terms. The finished panel measures 36 3/4 in wide x 84 1/2 in long (93.3 cm x 214.6 cm) after blocking.
You will work the header first in rows. Then you will work the Solomon’s knot lattice straight down from the header and square off the bottom with a leveling row. Last, you will add the border in rows around the two long sides and the bottom. Clip rings slide onto the header for hanging. For a pair, make two identical panels.

- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton or cotton blend
- Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
- Number of pieces: 1 (single panel, no joining)
- Layout: Header on top, lattice body, border on the two long sides and the bottom
- Piece size before border: 34 1/4 in x 83 1/4 in (87.0 cm x 211.5 cm)
- Header: 34 1/4 in x 2 in (87.0 cm x 5.1 cm)
- Lattice: 17 diamonds across, 32 1/2 diamond tiers tall, 81 1/4 in (206.4 cm) long
- Border depth: 1 1/4 in (3.2 cm) on each long side and across the bottom
Materials
Yarn: Use a smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend with a little sheen. Cotton holds its knots well and hangs straight. Try to avoid fuzzy or very stretchy yarns, because they blur the knots and make the lattice sag over time.
- Sage green: 400 g, about 680 m (744 yd), based on a yarn with about 170 m per 100 g
All of the panel is worked in a single color.
Tools:
- 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Measuring tape and a small ruler
- Rustproof pins and a blocking surface at least 37 in x 85 in (94.0 cm x 215.9 cm), such as foam mats or a bed covered with towels
- 9 curtain clip rings, for hanging
These quantities include a margin of about 15% for the swatch and for loops drawn a bit longer than the pattern asks. Double the yarn for a pair of panels.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
- dtr: double treble crochet (yo 3 times, then work off the loops 2 at a time)
- sk: skip
- st(s): stitch(es)
- yo: yarn over
- RS: right side
Special stitches
- Solomon’s Knot (SK): Pull the loop on your hook up to 1 1/2 in (3.8 cm). Yo and pull through to lock the loop. Insert the hook under the single back strand of the long loop. Yo, pull up a loop, yo, and pull through both loops on the hook. This sc is the knot.
- Edge Loop (EL): Work the same as SK, but pull the loop up to 2 1/2 in (6.4 cm).
- Mid-knot: When you make 2 SK between two anchor points, you get two knots. The first knot hangs free at the low point of the arch. This is the mid-knot. Work into it by inserting the hook through the center of the knot, under the sc that formed it.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Header gauge: 16 sc and 18 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm).
Lattice gauge (blocked): One diamond is 2 in (5.1 cm) wide x 2 1/2 in (6.4 cm) tall. Each lattice row adds 1 1/4 in (3.2 cm) to the length.
Test piece first. Before you start the panel, make a mini panel with 4 diamonds across:
- Ch 34. Work 9 rows of header on 33 sc, as written below.
- Work Lattice Rows 1–5, using 4 arches for Row 1 and Row A and 3 arches for Row B.
- Work the Leveling Row: 33 sts.
Pin it out without stretching. It should measure 8 1/4 in (21.0 cm) wide x 8 1/4 in (21.0 cm) tall, with a 2 in (5.1 cm) header and 6 1/4 in (15.9 cm) of lattice.
If your piece is too big: For the header, switch to a 4.5 mm hook. For the lattice, draw the SK loops a little shorter, about 1 3/8 in (3.5 cm).
If your piece is too small: For the header, switch to a 5.5 mm hook. For the lattice, draw the SK loops a little longer, about 1 5/8 in (4.1 cm).
Panel checkpoints:
- After the header: 34 1/4 in x 2 in (87.0 cm x 5.1 cm)
- After Lattice Row 17: 23 1/4 in (59.1 cm) total length
- After Lattice Row 33: 43 1/4 in (109.9 cm) total length
- After the Leveling Row: 83 1/4 in (211.5 cm) total length
Measure lattice length with the piece laid flat and the diamonds eased into shape, not pulled.

Header
The header is a solid band of single crochet. The clip rings attach here.
Foundation: Ch 138.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (137 sc)
Rows 2–9: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in each st across, turn. (137 sc)
Checkpoint: 34 1/4 in x 2 in (87.0 cm x 5.1 cm). Do not fasten off.
The 137 sts break down as 17 repeats of 8 sts plus 1. Each 8-st repeat is one 2 in (5.1 cm) diamond.
Lattice Body
The lattice hangs from Header Row 9. Two row types alternate. Row A makes 17 full arches from edge to edge. Row B is offset by half a diamond, with 16 full arches and a half arch at each edge.
Row 1 (Row A setup): Ch 1, sc in first st, *2 SK, sk 7 sts, sc in next st; repeat from * 16 more times, turn.
(17 arches, 17 mid-knots, 18 sc anchors. The last sc lands in st 137.)
Row 2 (Row B): EL (this hangs straight down the edge), 1 SK, sc in first mid-knot, *2 SK, sc in next mid-knot; repeat from * 15 more times, 1 SK. Do not anchor this last knot. It is the free edge point on the opposite side.
(16 full arches, 16 new mid-knots, 1 EL knot at the start edge, 1 free knot at the end edge)
Row 3 (Row A): Ch 1, sc in the last knot made, *2 SK, sc in next mid-knot; repeat from * 15 more times, 2 SK, sc in the EL knot at the bottom of the Edge Loop, turn.
(17 arches, 17 mid-knots)
Rows 4–65: Repeat Rows 2–3 thirty-one more times, ending with a Row A (Row 65).
You now have 65 lattice rows, or 81 1/4 in (206.4 cm). That is 32 full diamond tiers, 80 in (203.2 cm), plus the half-tier from Row 1. There are 32 Edge Loops on one long side and 32 free edge knots on the other.
Leveling Row (Row 66): This conversion row fills in the hanging points and gives a straight bottom edge. Ch 5 (counts as dtr), *ch 3, sc in next mid-knot, ch 3, dtr in next anchor sc of Row 65; repeat from * 16 more times. The last dtr goes in the first sc of Row 65. Fasten off.
Count: 35 sts worked into existing points (18 dtr + 17 sc) + 102 ch added (34 ch-3) = 137 sts. That is the same 8-st repeat plus 1 as the header.
Checkpoint before border: 34 1/4 in x 83 1/4 in (87.0 cm x 211.5 cm).
Border
The border is worked in rows around the two long sides and the bottom. The header’s top edge stays plain.
Border gauge: 4 sts per 1 in (2.5 cm) along each edge, and 4 sc rows plus the scallop row = 1 1/4 in (3.2 cm).
Row 1 (RS): With RS facing, join yarn at the top corner of the long side that has the Edge Loops.
- Side 1: Work 1 sc in each of the 9 header row-ends. Then work 9 sc over the Edge Loop, 1 sc in the EL knot; repeat from * 31 more times. Work 6 sc around the ch-5 post. (9 + 320 + 6 = 335 sc)
- Corner: 3 sc in the top of the ch-5.
- Bottom: Sc in each of the next 135 sts. (135 sc)
- Corner: 3 sc in the last dtr.
- Side 2: Work 6 sc around the same dtr post. Then sc in the free edge knot, ch 9; repeat from * 31 more times. Work 1 sc in each of the 9 header row-ends. (6 + 320 + 9 = 335 sts)
Turn. Total: 335 + 3 + 135 + 3 + 335 = 811 sts.
Along the sides, each diamond tier is 2 1/2 in (6.4 cm) and gets 10 sts. That keeps the border at 4 sts per inch. On the bottom, 135 sts plus the 2 corner groups use all 137 Leveling Row sts once each. The center sc of each 3-sc group is the corner st.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st and ch to the corner st, 3 sc in corner st, sc in each st to the next corner st, 3 sc in corner st, sc in each st to end, turn.
(336 + 3 + 137 + 3 + 336 = 815 sts)
Row 3: Repeat Row 2. (337 + 3 + 139 + 3 + 337 = 819 sts)
Row 4: Repeat Row 2. (338 + 3 + 141 + 3 + 338 = 823 sts)
Row 5 (scallop): Ch 1, sc in first st, *sk 2, 5 dc in next st, sk 2, sc in next st; repeat from * 136 more times. Fasten off. (137 scallops)
Why the math works: The scallop row needs a multiple of 6 sts plus 1. Here, 823 = 6 x 137 + 1. In Row 4, each long side has 338 sts, so the first corner st is st 340. Shell centers fall on sts 4, 10, 16, and so on. Since 340 = 6 x 56 + 4, the first corner gets a shell. The second corner st is st 484, and 484 = 6 x 80 + 4, so it gets a shell too. That gives 56 scallops on each side, 23 across the bottom, and 1 on each corner.
Finished size: 34 1/4 in + 1 1/4 in + 1 1/4 in = 36 3/4 in (93.3 cm) wide, and 83 1/4 in + 1 1/4 in = 84 1/2 in (214.6 cm) long.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends along the header or border. Never weave into the lattice loops.
- Soak the panel in cool water with a little wool wash for 15 minutes.
- Press out the water gently. Roll the panel in towels to remove more water. Do not wring it.
- Lay it flat on the blocking surface. Pin the header straight to 34 1/4 in (87.0 cm).
- Pin each long side to 84 1/2 in (214.6 cm) and the bottom to 36 3/4 in (93.3 cm).
- Ease each diamond open to about 2 in x 2 1/2 in (5.1 cm x 6.4 cm). Center each knot on its point.
- Open each scallop with your fingertips.
- Let it dry completely, then unpin.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- [ ] The header has 137 sts and measures 34 1/4 in (87.0 cm)
- [ ] Every lattice row has 17 arches (Row A) or 16 arches plus 2 half arches (Row B)
- [ ] There are 65 lattice rows and a 137-st Leveling Row
- [ ] Each long side has 32 Edge Loops or 32 free edge knots
- [ ] Border Row 4 has 823 sts, and there are 137 scallops
- [ ] Both bottom corners have a centered scallop
- [ ] All knots are snug, and the loops are all about the same length
- [ ] The blocked size is 36 3/4 in x 84 1/2 in (93.3 cm x 214.6 cm)
Troubleshooting
The diamonds look uneven. The SK loops vary in length. Measure a few loops against a ruler every row until the 1 1/2 in (3.8 cm) length becomes habit.
The lattice is too long. Your loops are drawn too long, or your yarn stretches. Take out rows in pairs, and keep the last row a Row A.
The side border ruffles. You have too many sts over the Edge Loops. Use exactly 9 sc per loop.
The side border pulls in. Your ch-9 bridges are too tight. Chain loosely, or use a 5.5 mm hook for the chains only.
A scallop lands off the corner. The count in Border Row 4 is off. Recount each section: 338, 3, 141, 3, 338.
The knots slide. Pull each knot sc snug before you start the next loop.
Care
Hand wash cool, or machine wash on the gentle cycle in a mesh laundry bag. Lay flat to dry and pin to shape again if needed. Do not hang the panel to dry while it is wet, because the lattice will stretch.

Final Notes
Here is the full measurement chain. The 16-st gauge gives 137 header sts, 34 1/4 in (87.0 cm). Those 137 sts give 17 diamonds at 2 in (5.1 cm) each. Sixty-five lattice rows at 1 1/4 in (3.2 cm) each add 81 1/4 in (206.4 cm). The Leveling Row brings the bottom back to 137 sts, and the size before the border is 34 1/4 in x 83 1/4 in (87.0 cm x 211.5 cm). A 1 1/4 in (3.2 cm) border finishes the panel at 36 3/4 in x 84 1/2 in (93.3 cm x 214.6 cm). If you check each step, the panel will come out true to size and hang straight from the clip rings.
