Snowy Mitten Curtain Crochet Pattern

This winter curtain is made from dozens of small mittens and tiny snowflake flowers. They hang on two-tone cords under a scalloped valance. Each mitten has a powder-blue hand, a rounded top, a small side thumb and a cream cuff with vertical ribs.

There are just two colors, powder blue and cream. The valance and bottom band repeat them in stripes, with wavy swags and small shell scallops. The look is cozy and Nordic, and it’s perfect beside a Christmas tree or a frosty window.

This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished curtain measures 36 in (91.4 cm) wide and 59.25 in (150.5 cm) long, from the rod to the bottom edge. Each mitten is 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall and 4 in (10.2 cm) wide, including the thumb.

You make the mittens flat, then make the flowers and 8 chain cords, and sew the mittens and flowers to the cords at measured points. Last, you crochet a striped valance and a narrow bottom band. Both are worked on the same 144-stitch base, so every cord lines up with a swag.

  • Powder blue: 280 g, about 504 m
  • Cream: 200 g, about 360 m

These quantities include about a 20% margin. One mitten uses about 3.5 g of blue and 1.5 g of cream.

Tools: 4.0 mm (G-6) and 5.0 mm (H-8) hooks, tapestry needle, 20 locking stitch markers, tape measure, blocking mats, rust-proof pins, spray bottle and scissors.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • blo – back loop only
  • sc2tog / dc2tog – single / double crochet 2 together
  • MR – magic ring
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • RS – right side

Petal: (sl st, ch 2, hdc, ch 2, sl st) all in the same stitch.

Shell: 5 dc in the same stitch.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge with the 4.0 mm hook: 16 sc and 18 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm); 16 dc and 8 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm).

Cord gauge with the 5.0 mm hook, two strands held together: 3 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm).

Make one complete mitten first. It’s your gauge test, and every other measurement depends on it.

Checkpoints:

  • Cuff: 1.25 in (3.2 cm) tall and 2.25 in (5.7 cm) wide. It relaxes to about 2.5 in (6.4 cm) once the hand is attached.
  • After hand Row 5: 3 in (7.6 cm) wide
  • Finished mitten: 4.5 in × 4 in (11.4 cm × 10.2 cm)
  • Valance Row 1: 36 in (91.4 cm)
  • Each cord: 58 in (147.3 cm) from the base of the loop

If your mitten is too big, go down 0.5 mm. If it’s too small, go up 0.5 mm. The 144-sc valance row must measure 36 in (91.4 cm), or the swags won’t line up with the cords.

Mitten (make 52)

Work the mitten flat with the cuff at the bottom. When it hangs, the cuff is at the top.

Cuff (cream)

With the 4.0 mm hook, ch 6.

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Turn. (5 sc)

Rows 2–10: Ch 1, sc blo in each st across, turn. (5 sc)

These 10 rows form the vertical ribs. Fasten off.

Hand (blue)

Turn the cuff so one long edge faces up.

Row 1: Join blue in the first row end. Ch 1, then work 1 sc in each row end across. Turn. (10 sc)

Row 2: Ch 2 (doesn’t count as a stitch here or in later rows), 2 dc in the first st, dc in the next 8 sts, 2 dc in the last st. Turn. (12 dc)

Rows 3–5: Ch 2, dc in each st across, turn. (12 dc)

Row 6: Ch 2, dc2tog, dc in the next 8 sts, dc2tog. Turn. (10 dc)

Row 7: Ch 1, sc2tog, hdc in the next 6 sts, sc2tog. Fasten off. (8 sts)

Thumb (blue)

With RS facing and the cuff at the bottom, work on the right-hand edge.

Row 1: Join blue at the row end of Row 3. Work 2 sc in the row end of Row 3 and 2 sc in the row end of Row 4. Turn. (4 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in the first st, 3 dc in each of the next 2 sts, sc in the last st. Fasten off. (8 sts)

The two 3-dc groups fan out into a rounded thumb tip that sticks out about 0.5 in (1.3 cm).

Edging (blue)

Join blue at the left row end of Row 1. Work 1 round of sc as follows.

  • Left side: 1 sc in the Row 1 row end, 2 sc in each row end of Rows 2–6, and 1 sc in the Row 7 row end. (12 sc)
  • Top: 3 sc in the first st of Row 7, sc in the next 6 sts, and 3 sc in the last st. (12 sc)
  • Right side, above the thumb: 1 sc in the Row 7 row end and 2 sc in each row end of Rows 6 and 5. (5 sc)
  • Around the thumb: 1 sc in each of the 2 upper row ends. Then sc across thumb Row 2, working 2 sc in each of the 4th and 5th sts (10 sc). Finish with 1 sc in each of the 2 lower row ends. (14 sc)
  • Right side, below the thumb: 2 sc in the Row 2 row end and 1 sc in the Row 1 row end. (3 sc)

The right side totals 5 + 14 + 3 = 22 sc. Sl st into the cuff edge.

Round total: 12 + 12 + 22 = 46 sc. The 3-sc corners and the decreases round off the top. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Snowflake Flower (make 56)

With cream and the 4.0 mm hook:

Rnd 1: Make a MR, ch 1, 5 sc in the ring, and sl st to the first sc. (5 sc)

Rnd 2: Work 1 petal in each sc around. (5 petals)

Leave an 8 in (20.3 cm) tail. The flower measures 0.75 in (1.9 cm) across.

Cord (make 8)

With the 5.0 mm hook, hold 1 strand of blue and 1 strand of cream together.

Ch 12 and sl st to the first ch to form a loop. It’s about 4 in (10.2 cm) around.

Then ch 174 (58 in / 147.3 cm). Fasten off and leave a 10 in (25.4 cm) tail. Holding the two colors together makes the speckled cord.

Make All Pieces

  • Mittens: 52 in total. They use 182 g of blue and 78 g of cream.
  • Flowers: 56 in cream, about 0.5 g each
  • Strand A: 7 mittens and 7 flowers
  • Strand B: 6 mittens and 7 flowers

Check: 4 × 7 + 4 × 6 = 52 mittens, and 8 × 7 = 56 flowers.

STRAND: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
TYPE: A B A B A B A B
MITTENS: 7 6 7 6 7 6 7 6
FLOWERS: 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7

Joining

Place a marker on each cord 4 in (10.2 cm) below the loop. This point lines up with the valance’s lowest edge. Measure all positions from this marker.

Strand A:

  • Mittens: cuff tops at 1.5 in (3.8 cm), then every 7.5 in (19.1 cm). (7 mittens)
  • Flowers: at 7.5 in (19.1 cm), then every 7.5 in (19.1 cm). (7 flowers)

Strand B:

  • Flowers: at 3.75 in (9.5 cm), then every 7.5 in (19.1 cm). (7 flowers)
  • Mittens: cuff tops at 5.25 in (13.3 cm), then every 7.5 in (19.1 cm). (6 mittens)

This staggers the mittens across the curtain. Every mitten has a flower 1.5 in (3.8 cm) above or below it.

Sewing: Lay each mitten face down with the cord running along its center line. With blue yarn, whipstitch the cord to the back of the mitten at three points: the cuff top, the cuff/hand seam and hand Row 5. Sew each flower to the front of the cord with its tail.

Tension: Keep the stitches snug but don’t pull. The cord must not bunch. Afterward, recheck each cord: it should still measure 54 in (137.2 cm) from the marker to the end.

Border

The valance and bottom band both use the 4.0 mm gauge of 4 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm).

Why the math works: 8 strands × 18 sts per strand space = 144 sts = 36 in (91.4 cm). Each 18-st repeat holds one swag and one cord, with the cord centered at the 10th stitch. Each repeat also divides into 3 shell repeats of 6 sts.

Valance

Row 1 (cream): Ch 145. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Turn. (144 sc)

Row 2 (cream): Ch 1, sc in each st across. Change to blue and turn. (144 sc)

Row 3 (blue): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each remaining st across. Change to cream and turn. (144 dc)

Row 4 (cream): Repeat Row 3. Change to blue. (144 dc)

Row 5 (blue, wave): Ch 1 (doesn’t count). Work this repeat 8 times: sc in the next 2 sts, hdc in the next 2 sts, dc in the next 2 sts, tr in the next 6 sts, dc in the next 2 sts, hdc in the next 2 sts, sc in the next 2 sts. That’s 18 sts per repeat. (144 sts)

Row 6 (cream, wave): Repeat Row 5, working each stitch into the same type of stitch below. (144 sts)

Row 7 (blue, wave): Repeat Row 6. (144 sts)

The repeat is symmetrical, so it still lines up after you turn. The stacked trebles push the lower edge into 8 deep swags.

Row 8 (cream, shell edge): Ch 1. Work this repeat 24 times: sc in the next st, skip 2 sts, shell in the next st, skip 2 sts. Sl st into the side of the last st. Fasten off. (24 sc and 24 shells, or 3 shells per swag)

Tabs (cream): Join cream on the opposite side of the foundation ch. Work this repeat 8 times: sc in the next 8 sts, ch 16, skip 2 sts, sc in the next 8 sts. That’s 8 + 2 + 8 = 18 sts per repeat, or 144 in total. Each tab sits directly above a swag center. Fasten off.

Bottom Band

Row 1 (cream): Ch 145. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Change to blue and turn. (144 sc)

Row 2 (blue): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each remaining st across. Change to cream and turn. (144 dc)

Row 3 (cream): Work valance Row 8. Fasten off. (24 sc and 24 shells)

Attach the cords: With Row 1 at the top, thread each cord tail through sts 10, 28, 46, 64, 82, 100, 118 and 136, one cord per stitch. Knot each tail on the back and weave it in.

Hang the curtain: Slide the 8 tabs onto the rod. Hang each cord loop right beside a tab, behind the valance.

Final Blocking

  1. Pin the mittens face down, shaping the rounded top and the thumb.
  2. Spray them until damp and let them dry.
  3. Pin the valance to 36 in (91.4 cm) wide. Pin each swag center to 4.25 in (10.8 cm) deep and each point to 2.5 in (6.4 cm).
  4. Pin every shell open, spray the valance, and let it dry for 12–24 hours.
  5. Block the band to 36 in × 1.25 in (91.4 cm × 3.2 cm).
  6. Hang the curtain for a day so the cords settle.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Each mitten has 46 edging sc and measures 4.5 in × 4 in (11.4 cm × 10.2 cm)
  • All thumbs face the same way
  • The cuff ribs run vertically
  • You have 52 mittens and 56 flowers
  • The cords are 4.5 in (11.4 cm) apart at the top and bottom
  • Each cord measures 54 in (137.2 cm) from the marker to the band
  • The valance and band each have 144 sts and 24 shells
  • All ends are woven in

Troubleshooting

The mitten top looks pointed. Work the 3-sc top corners, and don’t skip the Row 6 decreases.

The thumb curls. Check that thumb Row 1 has exactly 4 sc, then steam it flat.

The cuff flares. Use a smaller hook for the cuff only.

The swags are shallow. Make sure your trebles sit over the trebles below.

The cords are uneven. Add or remove chains before attaching the band.

The mittens twist. Sew each mitten to the cord at all three points.

Care

Hand wash in cool water and roll the curtain in a towel to remove excess water. Dry it flat and reshape the mittens while damp. Never hang it while wet.

Final Notes

Everything starts with gauge. 16 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm) gives a 4.5 in × 4 in (11.4 cm × 10.2 cm) mitten with 46 edging stitches. The 144-st valance and band measure 36 in (91.4 cm) and divide into 8 repeats of 4.5 in (11.4 cm), one per cord. Each cord carries a mitten every 7.5 in (19.1 cm) along 54 in (137.2 cm). Together they make a finished curtain of 36 in × 59.25 in (91.4 cm × 150.5 cm).

Happy crocheting!
