The Terracotta Sunrise Valance is a window topper with a pointed header band and seven beaded strands that hang below it. Each strand stacks small round beads, one scalloped medallion, one granny diamond and a full tassel. When light comes through the window, the motifs look like a string of small suns.
The palette has two colors: warm terracotta and soft cream. Terracotta forms the top band, the outlines, the medallion rings and the tassels. Cream fills the header points, the motif centers and some of the beads. The style is warm boho.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished valance measures 42.5 in (108.0 cm) wide. The header is 5.25 in (13.3 cm) deep at the point tips, and the full piece is about 27 in (68.6 cm) long.
You make seven pointed header panels and join them side by side. Next you work a border with hanging loops. Last, you link the strand motifs and tassels to the point tips with short chains.

Materials
Use a smooth mercerized or combed cotton in DK / light worsted weight. Cotton keeps the points crisp and helps the tassels hang heavy and straight. The amounts below assume about 115 yd (105 m) per 50 g.
- Terracotta (T): 120 g, about 275 yd (251 m)
- Cream (C): 60 g, about 140 yd (128 m)
These quantities include a margin of about 25% for swatching, tails and small tension differences.
Tools
- 4.0 mm (US G-6) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle and scissors
- Stiff card, 4 in (10.2 cm) tall, for the tassels
- Stitch markers
- Blocking mat, rust-proof pins and a spray bottle
- Curtain rod with 14 clip rings

- sk – skip
- sp – space
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- RS – right side
- T / C – terracotta / cream
Special stitches
- Shell: 5 dc in the same stitch.

Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 sc and 18 sc rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) with a 4.0 mm hook. One dc row is about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) tall.
Before you make the full set, make one panel, one medallion, one diamond and one bead. Block them lightly, then check these measurements:
- Panel after Row 1: 6 in (15.2 cm) wide
- Panel after Row 4: about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) tall
- Finished panel: 6 in (15.2 cm) x 4.25 in (10.8 cm)
- Medallion: 2 in (5.1 cm) after Round 2, 3 in (7.6 cm) after Round 3, 4.25 in (10.8 cm) after Round 5
- Diamond: 3.5 in (8.9 cm) after Round 4, 3.75 in (9.5 cm) square after Round 5
- Bead: 1 in (2.5 cm) across
If your pieces are too big, switch to a 3.5 mm hook. If they are too small, switch to a 4.5 mm hook. Do not change the stitch counts, because the border and strand spacing depend on exactly 24 stitches per panel.

Header Panel (Make 7)
Row 1 (T): Ch 25. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (24 sc)
Row 2 (T): Ch 3, turn (counts as dc). Dc in the next st. Ch 1, sk the next st, dc in the next st 11 times. (13 dc + 11 ch-1 sps = 24 sts)
Row 3 (T): Ch 1, turn. Sc in each dc and each ch-1 sp across. (24 sc) Fasten off.
Row 4 (C): Join C with RS facing. Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st across. (24 dc)
Checkpoint: the panel is 6 in (15.2 cm) wide and about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) tall.
Point rows (C): Work every point row the same way: ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st to the last 2 sts, sc2tog.
- Row 5: 22 sc
- Row 6: 20 sc
- Row 7: 18 sc
- Row 8: 16 sc
- Row 9: 14 sc
- Row 10: 12 sc
- Row 11: 10 sc
- Row 12: 8 sc
- Row 13: 6 sc
- Row 14: 4 sc
- Row 15: (sc2tog) twice. (2 sc)
- Row 16: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog. (1 sc, the tip)
Fasten off. Each diagonal edge now has 11 row ends (Rows 5–15). The point adds about 2.75 in (7.0 cm), for a panel height of 4.25 in (10.8 cm).
Medallion (Make 7)
Round 1 (C): Magic ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in the ring. Sl st to the top of the ch-3. (12 dc)
Round 2 (C): Ch 3, dc in the same st, then 2 dc in each st around. Join. (24 dc) Fasten off.
Round 3 (T): Join T in any st. Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc in the next st, ch 1 23 times. Sl st to the 3rd ch of the ch-4. (24 dc + 24 ch-1 sps) Fasten off.
Round 4 (C): Join C in any ch-1 sp. Ch 1, then 2 sc in each ch-1 sp around. Join. (48 sc) Fasten off.
Round 5 (T): Join T. Ch 1, sc in the next st, sk 1 st, shell in the next st, sk 1 st 12 times. Join. (12 sc + 12 shells) Fasten off.
Each repeat uses 4 stitches, and 12 x 4 = 48. Attach the strand at the center dc of shell 1 (top) and shell 7 (bottom). These are directly opposite each other.
Diamond (Make 7)
Round 1 (T): Magic ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2 3 times. Join. (12 dc + 4 corner sps) Fasten off.
Round 2 (C): Join C in any corner sp. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same sp, ch 1. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next corner, ch 1 3 times. Join. (24 dc)
Round 3 (C): Sl st to the corner sp. Work the corners as in Round 2, with ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1 along each side between them. Join. (36 dc) Fasten off.
Round 4 (T): Join T in a corner sp and work as Round 3, putting 3 dc in each ch-1 sp. (48 dc; each side has 12 dc + 3 ch-1 sps)
Round 5 (T): Ch 1, sc in each dc and each ch-1 sp, with (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner sp. Join. (68 sc; 17 per side, including both corner sc) Fasten off.
The diamond is 3.75 in (9.5 cm) square and about 5.3 in (13.5 cm) from corner to corner when it hangs on point.
Bead (Make 21)
Round 1: Magic ring, ch 1, 8 sc in the ring. Join. (8 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join. (16 sc) Fasten off.
Attach the strand at st 1 and st 9, which are opposite each other.
Tassel (Make 7, T)
Wrap T 35 times around the 4 in (10.2 cm) card. Tie the top with an 8 in (20.3 cm) strand and cut the bottom loops. Wrap another strand 6 times around the tassel, 0.75 in (1.9 cm) below the top. Knot it and bury the ends inside. Trim the tassel to 4 in (10.2 cm).
Make All Pieces
- Header panels: 7 (Rows 1–3 in T; Row 4 and the point in C)
- Medallions: 7 (Rounds 1, 2 and 4 in C; Rounds 3 and 5 in T)
- Diamonds: 7 (Rounds 1, 4 and 5 in T; Rounds 2 and 3 in C)
- Beads: 11 in T and 10 in C
- Tassels: 7 in T
Layout (bd = bead, MED = medallion, DIA = diamond, TAS = tassel):
Panel: P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 P6 P7
Level 1: T-bd C-bd T-bd C-bd T-bd C-bd T-bd
Level 2: MED DIA MED DIA MED DIA MED
Level 3: C-bd T-bd C-bd T-bd C-bd T-bd C-bd
Level 4: DIA MED DIA MED DIA MED DIA
Level 5: T-bd C-bd T-bd C-bd T-bd C-bd T-bd
Level 6: TAS TAS TAS TAS TAS TAS TAS
Bead check: the 4 odd strands use 8 T + 4 C beads, and the 3 even strands use 3 T + 6 C beads. That gives 11 T + 10 C = 21 beads.
Joining
Header panels: Hold two panels RS together. With T, sl st through both layers along the row ends of Rows 1–4 only: 1 sl st per sc row end and 2 per dc row end, for 6 sl sts per seam. Stop at the top of Row 4 so the points stay free. Join all 7 panels with 6 seams.
Keep the sl sts as loose as your regular stitches. Tight seams will pucker the top band. Checkpoint: the joined header measures 42 in (106.7 cm) x 4.25 in (10.8 cm).
Strands: Work the border first. To make each link, join T with a sl st at the bottom attachment point of the upper piece, ch 5, sl st into the top attachment point of the lower piece, and fasten off. Each link is about 1 in (2.5 cm) long.
Each strand needs 5 links: tip to bead, bead to motif, motif to bead, bead to motif, and motif to bead. That makes 35 links in total. Link diamonds through opposite corner ch-2 sps so they hang on point. Tie each tassel through st 9 of the lowest bead.
Border
Border gauge: 16 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm), worked as 1 sc per foundation ch.
Round 1 (T): With RS facing, join T in the first foundation ch at the top-right corner.
- Top edge: 1 sc in each foundation ch loop (24 per panel x 7 = 168 sc)
- Corner: ch 1
- Side: 6 sc in the row ends of Rows 1–4
- Point edge: for each panel, 11 sc down the diagonal, (sc, ch 2, sc) in the tip, and 11 sc up the next diagonal (24 sc per panel x 7 = 168 sc + 7 tip ch-2 sps)
- Other side: 6 sc
- Corner: ch 1, then sl st to the first sc
Round total: 168 + 6 + 168 + 6 = 348 sc, plus 7 tip sps and 2 corner chs. Fasten off.
Row 2 (top edge only): With RS facing, join T in the first top sc. Ch 2 (does not count), then hdc in each sc across. (168 hdc)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Sc in the next 6 sts, ch 8, sl st in the last sc made, sc in the next 6 sts 14 times. (168 sc + 14 loops) Fasten off.
Why the math works: The top edge gets exactly 1 sc per foundation chain: 7 x 24 = 168, with nothing added at the seams. At 16 sc per 4 in (10.2 cm), 168 sc = 42 in (106.7 cm). The point edge also has 24 sc per panel (11 + 2 + 11), so the top and bottom edges match. The loops are 12 sts apart, so they sit every 3 in (7.6 cm), starting 1.5 in (3.8 cm) from each end.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends on the back.
- Pin the header to 42.5 in (108.0 cm) x 5.25 in (13.3 cm), pinning each tip separately.
- Pin the medallions to 4.25 in (10.8 cm) circles, opening each shell.
- Pin the diamonds to 3.75 in (9.5 cm) squares with sharp corners.
- Mist until damp and let dry for 12–24 hours.
- Hang the valance and comb the tassels straight. Steam them lightly if needed.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- The header is 42.5 in (108.0 cm) wide and lies flat.
- There are 14 loops, spaced 3 in (7.6 cm) apart.
- All 7 tips have a ch-2 sp and a strand.
- The strands alternate as shown in the layout.
- The diamonds hang on point and the medallions hang straight.
- Every strand hangs about 21.75 in (55.2 cm) below its tip.
- The tassels are trimmed level at 4 in (10.2 cm).
Troubleshooting
- The point edge ripples: you worked more than 11 sc per diagonal. Redo the edging with 11.
- The point edge pulls: work the edging with a 4.5 mm hook.
- The top band puckers: loosen the seams or the foundation chain.
- A diamond hangs crooked: re-attach the links at opposite corners.
- The strands are uneven: make sure every link is exactly ch 5.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and dry flat. Re-pin the points and comb the tassels while the valance is damp.

Final Notes
Here is the measurement chain from start to finish. A gauge of 16 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm) makes each 24-stitch panel 6 in (15.2 cm) wide. Seven panels make a 42 in (106.7 cm) header, and the border brings it to 42.5 in (108.0 cm). Each strand adds about 21.75 in (55.2 cm), so the finished valance is about 27 in (68.6 cm) long. If your test panel matches, the rest will follow.
Happy crocheting!
