This bedspread is a field of golden leaf sprigs set into open chain mesh. Every square holds one upright sprig: a pointed tip leaf with four pairs of plump, ridged leaves along a short stem. The edge finishes in deep, pointed leaf scallops that hang over the side of the bed.
The whole piece is one warm mustard gold, so the texture leads: raised leaf veins, airy net, and a zigzag of leaf points. It reads as farmhouse heirloom, but every part is simple stitches repeated with care.
All instructions use US crochet terms. The finished bedspread measures 76 x 86 in (193.0 x 218.4 cm) after blocking, including a 3 in (7.6 cm) leaf border.
Construction is modular. You make 56 square mesh motifs and sew one leaf sprig onto each. Then you join the motifs in a 7 x 8 grid and work a four-round border of three-leaf scallops.

Materials
Use a smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend. Cotton keeps leaf edges crisp and makes the vein ridge stand up. Avoid fuzzy yarn, because it blurs the leaf shape. The quantities below assume about 200 m (218 yd) per 100 g.
Yarn
- Mustard Gold: 1,900 g, about 3,800 m (approximately 19 balls of 100 g)
That breaks down as about 1,400 g for the motifs (roughly 25 g or 50 m each), 60 g for joining, and 240 g for the border. The total includes a margin of about 10 percent for swatching and tension differences. Buy all of it from one dye lot.
Tools
- 5 mm (H-8) crochet hook
- 5.5 mm (I-9) hook for joining (optional)
- Tapestry needle
- Rust-proof pins (at least 150)
- Measuring tape
- Blocking mats or towels
- Stitch markers
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- sk = skip
- sp = space
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- RS / WS = right side / wrong side
Special stitch: Leaf (worked on a ch 9)
- Side 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch (8 sts). You are now at the base of the leaf.
- Side 2: Ch 1 and rotate. Working in the free loops of the same chains: sc, hdc, dc in next 3 ch, hdc, sc (7 sts).
- Tip: (Sc, ch 2, sc) in the skipped ch at the tip.
- Vein: Working on the surface down the center of the leaf, between the two sides, sl st 8 times back to the base.
Each Leaf is about 2 in (5.1 cm) long and 0.75 in (1.9 cm) wide. The surface slip stitches form the raised center ridge.
Leaf Trio (border only): In the same st, work (sc, [ch 9, Leaf], sl st, [ch 9, Leaf], sl st, [ch 9, Leaf], sl st). This gives three leaves fanning out from one point.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm) with a 5 mm hook.
Before you start production, make one complete test motif (mesh plus sprig). Block it lightly and measure it. Every other measurement grows from this square.
Checkpoints:
- After mesh Round 4: about 5.5 in (14.0 cm) from side to side
- After mesh Round 7: about 9.5 in (24.1 cm)
- After Round 8 (edge): 10 in (25.4 cm), 40 sc per side
- Finished sprig: about 7 in (17.8 cm) tall and 4.5 in (11.4 cm) wide
If the motif is too big, go down to a 4.5 mm hook. If it is too small, go up to a 5.5 mm hook. Never change stitch counts. A 0.25 in (0.6 cm) error per motif becomes 1.75 in (4.4 cm) across the width and 2 in (5.1 cm) along the length.

Part 1: Mesh Square (make 56)
Work in joined rounds from the center with RS facing.
Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 1, [sc in ring, ch 5] 8 times, then join with sl st to the first sc. (8 sc, 8 ch-5 loops) Loops 1, 3, 5 and 7 are corner loops. Loops 2, 4, 6 and 8 are side loops.
Round 2: Sl st in the first 3 ch of the next loop to reach its center. Ch 1, *(sc, ch 5, sc) in corner loop, ch 5, sc in next side loop, ch 5; repeat from * 3 more times, then join. (12 sc, 12 ch-5 loops: 4 corner loops + 2 side loops per side)
Round 3: Sl st to the center of the corner loop. Ch 1, *(sc, ch 5, sc) in corner loop, [ch 5, sc in next loop] 2 times, ch 5; repeat from * 3 more times, then join. (16 sc, 16 loops: 4 corner loops + 3 side loops per side)
Rounds 4–7: Sl st to the center of the corner loop. Ch 1, *(sc, ch 5, sc) in corner loop, [ch 5, sc in next loop] to the next corner loop, ch 5; repeat from * 3 more times, then join.
- Round 4: 20 sc, 20 loops (4 side loops per side)
- Round 5: 24 sc, 24 loops (5 side loops per side)
- Round 6: 28 sc, 28 loops (6 side loops per side)
- Round 7: 32 sc, 32 loops (7 side loops per side)
Round 8 (edge, conversion round): Sl st to the center of the corner loop. Ch 1, *(2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in corner loop, sc in next sc, [4 sc in next loop, sc in next sc] 7 times; repeat from * 3 more times. On the final repeat, leave off the last sc, because it is the first sc you worked. Join.
Count: 32 sc (1 in each existing sc) + 128 sc added in the loops (28 side loops x 4 + 4 corner loops x 4) = 160 sc, plus 4 corner ch-2 spaces.
Each side has 40 sc between the corner ch-2 spaces. The ch-2 space is not counted as a stitch. The 40 already includes the 2 sc on each side of every corner. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Part 2: Leaf Sprig (make 56)
Stem: Ch 27.
Tip leaf: Work a Leaf on the last 9 ch. You finish at its base with 18 stem ch remaining.
Leaf pairs: *Sl st in the next 3 stem ch. Ch 9, work a Leaf and lay it to the left, then sl st in the same stem ch. Ch 9, work a Leaf and lay it to the right, then sl st in the same stem ch. Repeat from * 3 more times. (4 pairs, 12 stem ch used)
Stem end: Sl st in the remaining 6 stem ch. Fasten off, leaving a 16 in (40.6 cm) tail.
Count: 1 tip leaf + 8 pair leaves = 9 leaves. The sprig measures about 7 x 4.5 in (17.8 x 11.4 cm).
Part 3: Attach the Sprig
- Lay the mesh square RS up with its sides straight.
- Center the sprig with the tip pointing to the top edge and the stem end 1.5 in (3.8 cm) above the bottom edge.
- Pin each leaf tip and the stem end to the nearest mesh sc.
- Using the tail, tack down the full length of the stem. Then tack each leaf at its base and at its ch-2 tip. Leave the leaf sides free so they stay plump.
Point every sprig the same way. On the bed, all the tips point toward the pillows.
Part 4: Make All Pieces
Make 56 complete motifs in Mustard Gold, about 1,400 g in total. Re-measure every tenth motif against the 10 in (25.4 cm) checkpoint.
Layout grid (A = leaf motif, tip pointing up):
Row 1 (head): A A A A A A A
Row 2: A A A A A A A
Row 3: A A A A A A A
Row 4: A A A A A A A
Row 5: A A A A A A A
Row 6: A A A A A A A
Row 7: A A A A A A A
Row 8 (foot): A A A A A A A
Part 5: Joining
Method: Slip-stitch seam, worked from the WS.
- Hold two motifs RS together with the edges aligned.
- Sl st through both corner ch-2 spaces. Then sl st through both layers in each of the 40 sc, matching stitch to stitch. Finish with a sl st through the next pair of corner spaces.
- Join the motifs into 8 strips of 7 first. Then join the strips together, still matching 40 sts to 40 sts on each motif.
- Where four corners meet, work one sl st through all the meeting ch-2 spaces.
Tension: Keep the slip stitches as loose as the motif edge. If a seam pulls, switch to the 5.5 mm hook for joining only.
Size checkpoint: The joined top should measure 70 x 80 in (177.8 x 203.2 cm). The seams add no stitches.
Part 6: Border
Border gauge: 16 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm), the same as the motifs.
Round 1: With RS facing, join the yarn in any outer corner ch-2 space. Ch 1, *ch 2 in the corner space, then sc in each sc along the side, skipping the joined ch-2 spaces at the seams; repeat from * around, then join.
- Short sides: 7 motifs x 40 = 280 sc
- Long sides: 8 motifs x 40 = 320 sc
- Total: 1,200 sc, plus 4 corner ch-2 spaces
Round 2 (mesh): Ch 1. At each corner, work (sc, ch 4) in the corner space. Along each side, [sc in next sc, ch 4, sk next 4 sc] across, then join.
- Short sides: 280 ÷ 5 = 56 sc, 56 ch-4 loops
- Long sides: 320 ÷ 5 = 64 sc, 64 ch-4 loops
- Corners: 1 sc and 1 loop each
- Total: 244 sc, 244 loops
Round 3 (leaf round, conversion round): Ch 1. At each corner, sc in the corner sc, then work (3 sc, ch 2, 3 sc) in the corner loop. Along each side, repeat over every 4 loops: *sc in next sc, 4 sc in next loop, sc in next sc, 4 sc in next loop, Leaf Trio in next sc, 4 sc in next loop, sc in next sc, 4 sc in next loop; repeat from * across. Join.
- Short sides: 56 sc (1 in each existing sc) + 224 sc added in the loops = 280 sc, with 14 Leaf Trios
- Long sides: 64 + 256 = 320 sc, with 16 Leaf Trios
- Corners: 7 sc and a ch-2 space each
- Total: 60 Leaf Trios (180 leaves)
Round 4 (scallop outline): Join in the first sc of the first repeat after a corner. *Ch 8, sc in the ch-2 tip of the left leaf, ch 5, (sc, ch 3, sc) in the tip of the center leaf, ch 5, sc in the tip of the right leaf, ch 8, sc in the first sc of the next repeat; repeat from * along the side. At each corner, after the last trio, ch 8, work (sc, ch 5, sc) in the corner ch-2 space, ch 8, then sc in the first sc of the next side. Join and fasten off.
Why the math works: Each motif side has 40 sc. With a 5-stitch repeat, Round 2 makes exactly 8 loops per motif side. Round 3 turns each loop back into 5 sc (1 + 4), so the side returns to 40 per motif. A trio every 4 loops gives exactly 2 scallops per motif, so the points line up with the grid.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends.
- Soak the bedspread in cool water for 15 minutes. Press the water out gently without wringing.
- Roll it in towels to remove the excess moisture.
- Lay it flat and pin the corners to 76 x 86 in (193.0 x 218.4 cm).
- Pin the seams straight, checking that each motif measures 10 in (25.4 cm).
- Pin each border leaf point outward, 3 in (7.6 cm) from the base.
- Shape the sprig leaves with your fingers so the veins stand up.
- Let it dry completely before you remove the pins.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- 56 motifs, each with 40 sc per side and 9 leaves
- All sprig tips point the same way
- Every motif measures 10 in (25.4 cm)
- Seams lie flat without puckering
- Border Round 1 has 280 sc on each short side and 320 sc on each long side
- 14 trios on each short side and 16 on each long side
- Blocked size is 76 x 86 in (193.0 x 218.4 cm)
- All ends are secured
Troubleshooting
Motif cups at the center: The loops are too short for your tension. Go up one hook size for Rounds 1–7.
Motif ruffles: The loops are too long. Use ch 4 instead of ch 5 in Rounds 1–7.
Leaves look flat: Work the vein slip stitches a little firmer.
Sprig twists: Make sure both leaves in a pair come from the same stem chain.
Edge count is off: Count Round 8 side by side. Each side needs 40 sc.
Border waves or pulls: Adjust your hook size by 0.5 mm for border Rounds 1–2.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent. Dry flat, reshaping the leaves while they are damp. Never hang the bedspread wet, because the mesh will stretch.

Final Notes
The measurement chain is simple. At 16 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm), 40 sc make a 10 in (25.4 cm) motif side. Seven motifs give 70 in (177.8 cm) and eight give 80 in (203.2 cm). A 3 in (7.6 cm) border on every edge brings the total to 76 x 86 in (193.0 x 218.4 cm). Get the first motif right, and the rest will follow.
Happy crocheting!
