Rosewood Links Window Curtain Crochet Pattern

The Rosewood Links Window Curtain is made of eight hanging strands. Each strand is a column of pointed oval links joined tip to tip. The links are thick and ribbed, each one framing a slim almond-shaped opening, so light comes through the curtain while it still looks soft and full.

The strands alternate dusty rose and cream. Every strand hangs from its own crocheted loop on a wooden rod and finishes in a long, full tassel at the bottom. The look is calm and cozy, and it suits a holiday window just as well as a bedroom or nursery all year.

This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished curtain measures about 23 in (58.4 cm) wide and 40.5 in (102.9 cm) long, tassels and hanging loops included. Each link measures 4.25 in (10.8 cm) long and 2 in (5.1 cm) wide.

Each link is a foundation chain ring worked in three rounds of single crochet, with increases only at the two tips to make the points. Links are joined as you go in the final round. A hanging loop goes on the top link and a tassel on the bottom link.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: about 23 in (58.4 cm) wide x 40.5 in (102.9 cm) long
  • Skill level: Easy
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton
  • Hook: 4.5 mm (US 7)
  • Number of pieces: 64 links (32 rose, 32 cream), 8 hanging loops, 8 tassels, assembled into 8 strands
  • Layout: 8 strands side by side, 8 links per strand, colors alternating
  • Piece size (one link): 4.25 in (10.8 cm) x 2 in (5.1 cm)
  • Size before border (after Round 2): 3.75 in (9.5 cm) x 1.5 in (3.8 cm)
  • Border depth: 1 round of sc, about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) on each edge
  • Strand length: 34 in (86.4 cm) of links + 1.5 in (3.8 cm) loop + 5 in (12.7 cm) tassel = 40.5 in (102.9 cm)

Materials

Choose a smooth, firm worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend. Cotton gives clean stitch definition, holds the pointed tips well, and doesn’t stretch much while hanging. Avoid fuzzy or very stretchy acrylics because long strands can lengthen over time.

  • Dusty rose: 110 g / 210 m
  • Cream: 110 g / 210 m

Each strand uses about 37 m (roughly 19 g): about 3 m per link, about 0.6 m for the hanging loop, and about 12 m for the tassel and ties. These quantities include a margin of about 40% to allow for swatching, gauge differences, and fuller tassels.

Tools:

  • 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers (2 per link)
  • Scissors
  • Stiff card 5.5 in (14.0 cm) tall for tassels
  • Measuring tape
  • Blocking mat and rust-proof pins
  • Wooden curtain rod or dowel at least 26 in (66.0 cm) long

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • rnd – round
  • tip group – 3 sc worked in one stitch at a link tip; its middle sc is the tip center

Special stitch – Join-as-you-go (JAYG): Drop the loop from your hook. Insert the hook from front to back through the tip center of the previous link, pick up the dropped loop, and pull it through. This join adds no stitch to the count.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge: 16 sc and 18 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm) in sc, worked fairly firmly.

Before you make 64 links, make one complete link and measure it flat:

  • Foundation ring (24 ch): laid flat as an almond, the opening is about 2.75 in (7.0 cm) long and 0.5 in (1.3 cm) wide.
  • After Round 2: 3.75 in (9.5 cm) long x 1.5 in (3.8 cm) wide.
  • After Round 3: 4.25 in (10.8 cm) long x 2 in (5.1 cm) wide.

If your link is more than 0.25 in (0.6 cm) too long, go down to a 4 mm hook. If it’s more than 0.25 in (0.6 cm) too short, go up to a 5 mm hook. If the link cups instead of lying flat, loosen your tension slightly or go up half a hook size. Don’t add stitches, because the tip shape depends on the exact counts.

Link Pattern

Mark the two tip centers in every round with stitch markers and move them up as you go. Tip A is the top of the link and tip B is the bottom.

Foundation: Ch 24 and sl st in the first ch to form a ring. Don’t twist the chain. The first ch is tip A and the 13th ch is tip B.

Rnd 1: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st here and throughout). 3 sc in the first ch (tip A), sc in each of the next 11 ch, 3 sc in the next ch (tip B), sc in each of the next 11 ch, sl st to the first sc. (28 sts)

Each half is a 3-sc tip group plus 11 side sts: 3 + 11 + 3 + 11 = 28.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in the first st, 3 sc in the next st (tip A center), sc in each of the next 13 sts, 3 sc in the next st (tip B center), sc in each of the next 12 sts, sl st to the first sc. (32 sts)

Check: 1 + 3 + 13 + 3 + 12 = 32. Each tip gained 2 sts, for 4 increases in the round.

Stop and measure: 3.75 in (9.5 cm) x 1.5 in (3.8 cm). For link 1 of each strand, continue straight to the Border round. For links 2 to 8, use the Joining method while you work the Border round.

Make All Pieces

Each strand uses one color throughout.

  • Dusty rose: 4 strands = 32 links, 4 hanging loops, 4 tassels
  • Cream: 4 strands = 32 links, 4 hanging loops, 4 tassels

Layout across the rod, left to right (R = rose strand, C = cream strand; each row is one link position):

Loop: R C R C R C R C
Link 1: R C R C R C R C
Link 2: R C R C R C R C
Link 3: R C R C R C R C
Link 4: R C R C R C R C
Link 5: R C R C R C R C
Link 6: R C R C R C R C
Link 7: R C R C R C R C
Link 8: R C R C R C R C
Tassel: R C R C R C R C

Joining

Links are joined tip to tip during Round 3, the border round. Tip A of each new link joins to tip B of the link above it. The strands themselves aren’t joined to each other; they hang separately from the rod.

Stitch-to-stitch logic: Only one stitch pair connects each pair of links: the tip A center sc of the new link and the tip B center sc of the finished link above it. In the tip A group, work 1 sc, JAYG into the previous link’s tip B center, then work the remaining 2 sc in the same stitch. The tip group still has 3 sc, and the round still has 36 sts. No stitches are added at the seam.

Orientation: Keep the right side of both links facing you and make sure the previous link isn’t twisted before you join.

Tension: Pull the JAYG loop snug but not tight. If it’s too tight, the tips pucker. If it’s too loose, a gap opens and the strand stretches when it hangs.

Size checkpoint: 2 joined links measure 8.5 in (21.6 cm) and 4 joined links measure 17 in (43.2 cm). A finished 8-link strand measures 34 in (86.4 cm). The tips meet at a single point, so each link adds exactly 4.25 in (10.8 cm).

Border

Border gauge: 1 rnd of sc adds about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) to every edge. That’s 0.5 in (1.3 cm) in total length and 0.5 in (1.3 cm) in total width.

Rnd 3 (border): Ch 1, sc in each of the first 2 sts, 3 sc in the next st (tip A center; for links 2–8, work the JAYG here as described in Joining), sc in each of the next 15 sts, 3 sc in the next st (tip B center), sc in each of the next 13 sts, sl st to the first sc. (36 sts) Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Counts per side: Counting each long side as the stitches between the two tip centers (not counting the tip centers themselves), every side has 17 sts. 2 tip centers + 17 + 17 = 36.

Why the math works: In every round, each tip gains 2 sts and each long side grows by exactly 2 sts, one at each end, from the flanking sc of the tip groups below. The sides go from 13 to 15 to 17 sts, and the totals go from 28 to 32 to 36. Because the increases stay at the centers, the tips stay pointed, and the 4 increases per round keep the sides gently curved instead of rounded.

Hanging Loop (link 1 only)

Join the yarn with a sl st in the tip A center of link 1. Ch 12 and sl st in the same st to form a loop. Work 16 sc into the loop and sl st in the tip A center. Fasten off. The loop stands 1.5 in (3.8 cm) tall and fits a rod up to about 0.75 in (1.9 cm) in diameter. For a thicker rod, add 4 ch and 4 sc.

Tassel (link 8 only)

Wrap the yarn 40 times around a 5.5 in (14.0 cm) card. Slide a 12 in (30.5 cm) tie under the top of the wraps and knot it tightly. Cut through the wraps at the bottom. Wrap a second tie 6 times around the bundle 0.75 in (1.9 cm) below the top, knot it, and hide the ends inside. Thread the top tie through the tip B center of link 8, knot it securely, and bury the ends in the tassel. Trim the tassel to 5 in (12.7 cm).

Final Blocking

  1. Lay each strand flat on a blocking mat, right side up.
  2. Mist it with water until it’s damp, not soaked.
  3. Pin each link to 4.25 in (10.8 cm) x 2 in (5.1 cm), with one pin at each tip.
  4. Ease each center opening into a symmetrical almond shape.
  5. Check that the strand measures 34 in (86.4 cm) from the top tip to the bottom tip.
  6. Let it dry completely.
  7. Steam the tassels lightly, comb them straight, and trim them evenly to 5 in (12.7 cm).

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Each link has 36 sts in Round 3 and 17 sts on each side.
  • All links measure 4.25 in (10.8 cm) x 2 in (5.1 cm).
  • Each strand has 8 links joined at single tip points, with no twists.
  • All 8 strands measure 40.5 in (102.9 cm) and are within 0.25 in (0.6 cm) of each other.
  • The hanging loops are the same size and slide easily onto the rod.
  • The tassels are firmly tied and trimmed to 5 in (12.7 cm).
  • All ends are woven in securely.

Troubleshooting

  • Link cups or curls: Your tension is too tight. Loosen it or go up half a hook size.
  • Link ruffles: You may have extra stitches. Recount each round against 28, 32, and 36.
  • Rounded tips: Make sure each 3-sc group goes into the tip center, not into a stitch beside it.
  • Strands are different lengths: Check gauge for each color, because cream and rose can work up differently. Block both colors to the same link size.
  • Twisted strand: Undo the joining round of the twisted link and redo the JAYG with both right sides facing you.
  • Tassel slips: Retie the top tie with a double knot and add a drop of fabric glue inside the head.

Care

Hand wash in cool water, roll in a towel, and dry flat, pinning to size if needed. Don’t hang the strands while they’re wet, because the weight of the water will stretch them.

Final Notes

Everything in this curtain follows from one link. A 24-ch ring is worked in rounds of 28, 32, and 36 sts, so it measures 3.75 in (9.5 cm) after Round 2 and 4.25 in (10.8 cm) after the border. Eight links make a 34 in (86.4 cm) strand. Adding the loop and tassel brings each strand to 40.5 in (102.9 cm). Eight strands spaced 3 in (7.6 cm) apart on the rod, measured center to center, make a curtain 23 in (58.4 cm) wide. If you check your gauge on the first link, everything after it will fit.

Happy crocheting!
