Leafy Trellis Three-Tier Toilet Paper Holder Crochet Pattern

This hanging organizer stores three spare rolls in a small footprint. It has three round baskets in a lacy leaf pattern, a scalloped rim on each one, and a layered flower on the front. It hangs from one wooden ring, so a single hook or towel bar is all you need.

The palette is deep forest green, warm cream, raspberry magenta and soft pink. The green carries the structure, the cream rim brightens the top edge, and the flowers add one point of color per tier. The look is cottage-garden: cheerful, but still neat enough for a small bathroom.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. Each basket is 5.75 in (14.6 cm) across and 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall. The finished organizer hangs about 21.5 in (54.6 cm) from the top of the ring to the base of the bottom basket.

Each basket starts with a flat base worked in the round. The wall builds up from there: a solid band, two tiers of leaf clusters in a diamond mesh, and a solid band that brings the count back to 72 stitches. Two cream rounds make the scalloped rim. Then you make two long straps and sew them to the sides of all three baskets, loop the tops through a wooden ring and stitch on the flowers.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: about 21.5 in (54.6 cm) long overall; each basket is 5.75 in (14.6 cm) across and 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) 100% cotton
  • Hook: 4.0 mm (G-6)
  • Number of pieces: 11 crocheted pieces (3 baskets, 2 straps, 3 magenta flowers, 3 pink flowers) plus 1 wooden ring
  • Layout: 3 baskets in a vertical stack, linked by 2 side straps
  • Piece size (basket): 5.75 in (14.6 cm) across x 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall
  • Size before border (rim): wall is 3.1 in (7.9 cm) tall after Rnd 12
  • Border (rim) depth: 0.65 in (1.7 cm)

Materials

Use a smooth, firm worsted-weight cotton. Cotton holds its shape under the weight of the rolls and copes well with bathroom humidity. Acrylic stretches more, and the straps will sag over time. The amounts below assume about 78 m per 50 g.

  • Forest green: 110 g / 172 m (baskets and straps)
  • Cream: 25 g / 39 m (rims)
  • Raspberry magenta: 15 g / 23 m (large flowers)
  • Light pink: 8 g / 12 m (small flowers)

Tools:

  • 4.0 mm (G-6) crochet hook
  • Wooden macramé ring, 2.75 in (7.0 cm) across
  • Tapestry needle
  • 4 stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Optional: three 5.5 in (14.0 cm) plastic-canvas circles to stiffen the bases

All quantities include a margin of about 15% for gauge differences and the gauge swatch.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • BLO – back loop only
  • sp(s) – space(s)
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • rnd – round
  • sk – skip
  • yo – yarn over

Special stitches

  • Leaf (3-tr cluster): *Yo twice, insert hook in st, pull up a loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] twice; repeat from * 2 more times in the same st, yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook. This makes a pointed, leaf-shaped cluster that is narrow at the base and full in the middle.
  • Beginning Leaf: Ch 4, then *yo twice, insert hook in same st, pull up a loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] twice; repeat from * once more, yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge: 16 dc and 9 dc rounds = 4 in (10.2 cm). For the straps, 18 sc and 20 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm).

Make one complete basket before anything else. That basket is your real gauge test, because the lace rounds stretch differently from a flat swatch.

Checkpoints:

  • After Rnd 1, the base is about 1 in (2.5 cm) across.
  • After Rnd 3, it is about 2.75 in (7.0 cm) across.
  • After Rnd 6, the base lies flat and is 5.5 in (14.0 cm) across.
  • After Rnd 12, the wall is 3.1 in (7.9 cm) tall and the tube is 18 in (45.7 cm) around.
  • After Rnd 14, the basket is 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall.

Too big? Go down 0.5 mm in hook size. A base wider than 6 in (15.2 cm) will make the rolls rattle around.

Too small? Go up 0.5 mm. The basket needs to be at least 5.25 in (13.3 cm) across inside to fit a roll that is 4.5 in (11.4 cm) wide.

Base ruffling? Your tension is loose. Go down a hook size for Rnds 1–6 only.

Base cupping? Go up a hook size for the base.

Basket (make 3)

Use green.

Base

Rnd 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work 11 dc in the ring. Pull the ring closed and join with a sl st to the top of the ch-3. (12 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc). Dc in the same st, then work 2 dc in each st around. Join. (24 dc)

Rnd 3: Ch 3. *2 dc in next st, dc in next st*; repeat from * around, ending with 2 dc in the last st. Join. (36 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 3. Dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st*; repeat from * around. Join. (48 dc)

Rnd 5: Ch 3. Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st*; repeat from * around. Join. (60 dc)

Rnd 6: Ch 3. Dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st*; repeat from * around. Join. (72 dc)

Check now that the base is 5.5 in (14.0 cm) across and lies flat.

Wall

Rnd 7 (turning round): Ch 3 (counts as dc). Work 1 dc in the BLO of each st around. Join. (72 dc)

The unused front loops make a crisp ridge, and the wall starts to rise straight up from it.

Rnd 8 (first leaf tier): Ch 1. Sc in the first st, ch 3, sk 2 sts, Leaf in next st, ch 3, sk 2 sts. *Sc in next st, ch 3, sk 2 sts, Leaf in next st, ch 3, sk 2 sts*; repeat from * 10 more times. Join to the first sc. (12 Leaves, 12 sc, 24 ch-3 sps)

Each repeat uses 6 sts, and 72 ÷ 6 = 12 repeats.

Rnd 9 (mesh): Ch 4 (counts as tr) in the joining sc. Ch 3, sc in the top of the next Leaf, ch 3. *Tr in next sc, ch 3, sc in the top of the next Leaf, ch 3*; repeat from * 10 more times. Join to the top of the ch-4. (12 tr, 12 sc, 24 ch-3 sps)

The tr stitches raise the low points, so the top edge is level again. The chains outline a diamond around each leaf.

Rnd 10 (second leaf tier, staggered): Work a Beginning Leaf in the joining st. Ch 3, sc in next sc, ch 3. *Leaf in next tr, ch 3, sc in next sc, ch 3*; repeat from * 10 more times. Join to the top of the Beginning Leaf. (12 Leaves, 12 sc, 24 ch-3 sps)

The new leaves sit over the tr stitches, which means they fall between the leaves of Rnd 8. That creates the staggered trellis.

Rnd 11 (mesh): Ch 1. Sc in the top of the Beginning Leaf, ch 3, tr in next sc, ch 3. *Sc in the top of the next Leaf, ch 3, tr in next sc, ch 3*; repeat from * 10 more times. Join to the first sc. (12 sc, 12 tr, 24 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 12 (conversion round): Ch 3 (counts as dc). 2 dc in the next ch-3 sp, dc in next tr, 2 dc in the next ch-3 sp. *Dc in next sc, 2 dc in the next ch-3 sp, dc in next tr, 2 dc in the next ch-3 sp*; repeat from * 10 more times. Join. Fasten off green.

Count: 24 sts worked 1-per-st + 48 dc worked into the spaces = 72 dc.

The wall is now 3.1 in (7.9 cm) tall and 18 in (45.7 cm) around.

Straps (make 2)

Use green.

Row 1: Ch 4. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the next 2 ch. (3 sc)

Rows 2–112: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (3 sc)

Fasten off and leave a 24 in (61.0 cm) tail for sewing. The strap is 0.7 in (1.8 cm) wide and 22.4 in (56.9 cm) long.

Place markers to divide each strap into sections:

  • Rows 1–8: ring tab, 1.6 in (4.1 cm)
  • Rows 9–33: drop to the top basket, 5 in (12.7 cm)
  • Rows 34–52: along Basket 1, 3.8 in (9.7 cm)
  • Rows 53–60: gap, 1.6 in (4.1 cm)
  • Rows 61–79: along Basket 2
  • Rows 80–87: gap
  • Rows 88–106: along Basket 3
  • Rows 107–112: tail, 1.2 in (3.0 cm), which folds under the bottom base

Flowers (make 3 of each)

Large flower (magenta):

Rnd 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 1, then work 12 sc in the ring. Join. (12 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1. *Sc in next st, ch 3, sk 1 st*; repeat from * 5 more times. Join. (6 sc, 6 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 3: In each ch-3 sp, work (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc), then sl st in the next sc. Join. (6 petals)

The flower is 2.25 in (5.7 cm) across. Leave a long tail.

Small flower (pink):

Rnd 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 1, then work 10 sc in the ring. Pull the ring tightly closed and join. (10 sc)

Rnd 2: *(Hdc, dc, hdc) in next st, sl st in next st*; repeat from * 4 more times. (5 petals)

The flower is 1.25 in (3.2 cm) across.

Joining

Placement: On each basket, the round’s join seam marks st 1, at the back. Place markers at st 19 and st 55. They are exactly 36 sts apart, so the straps sit directly opposite each other. The front center is st 37.

Method: Line up the strap’s 3 sts with basket sts 18–20 on one side and 54–56 on the other. Whipstitch both long edges of the strap section to the outside of the wall. Work 1 whipstitch per strap row, catching the post of the wall stitch underneath. Add 3 extra stitches through Rnd 12, where the fabric is solid, and 3 through the Rnd 7 ridge. Those solid rounds carry the weight, not the lace.

Order:

  • Rows 34–52 go along Basket 1.
  • Rows 61–79 go along Basket 2.
  • Rows 88–106 go along Basket 3.
  • Fold rows 107–112 under the bottom base and tack them to Rnd 6.
  • Pass rows 1–8 through the ring, fold them back onto rows 9–16, and whipstitch them down securely.

Tension: Sew firmly but don’t pull until the strap puckers. Hang the organizer and check that all three baskets sit level before you weave in the ends.

Size checkpoint: Measure 1.6 in (4.1 cm) between a basket’s base and the top of the rim below it. The whole organizer should hang about 21.5 in (54.6 cm) long.

The rims are added before joining, so the strap tops sit under the scallops. Work the border section below on each basket first.

Border: Cream Scalloped Rim

Border gauge: One scallop repeat (6 sts) = 1.5 in (3.8 cm).

Rnd 13: Join cream with a sc in st 1 of Rnd 12. Sc in each st around. Join. (72 sc)

Rnd 14: Ch 1. Sc in the first st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk 2 sts. *Sc in next st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk 2 sts*; repeat from * 10 more times. Join to the first sc. (12 scallops: 60 dc + 12 sc = 72 sts)

Fasten off.

Why the math works: The basket is round, so it has no corners. The rim is one continuous edge of 72 sts. Each scallop uses 6 sts, and 72 ÷ 6 = 12 repeats exactly, which matches the 12-repeat leaf pattern below. The sc between scallops fall on sts 1, 7, 13, 19 and so on, so st 19 and st 55 each sit at a sc point. That means each strap meets the rim in a scallop valley.

The rim adds 0.65 in (1.7 cm), bringing the basket to 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall.

Attaching the Flowers

  1. Center a pink flower on a magenta flower and sew through its Rnd 1.
  2. Pin the flower stack to the front of the basket at st 37, over Rnds 9–10.
  3. Sew around the outer edge of the magenta Rnd 1, and tack the tip of each petal so it doesn’t flop.

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends, running each one through solid rounds.
  2. Lightly mist each basket with water.
  3. Stuff each basket with a roll or a 5.75 in (14.6 cm) jar so the wall dries straight.
  4. Press each base flat. Insert the optional plastic-canvas circle now if you’re using one.
  5. Pin the scallops so they flare evenly.
  6. Pin the straps out straight to 0.7 in (1.8 cm) wide.
  7. Let everything dry completely, about 24 hours.
  8. Hang the organizer empty for one day before loading it with rolls.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Each base is 5.5 in (14.0 cm) across and flat.
  • Each basket has 12 leaves per tier, staggered between tiers.
  • Each rim has 12 even scallops.
  • The straps are directly opposite each other on every basket.
  • The gaps between baskets are all 1.6 in (4.1 cm).
  • The flowers sit at front center at the same height on all three baskets.
  • The ring tabs are stitched through several layers.
  • No loose ends show.

Troubleshooting

  • Leaves lean sideways: Pull each cluster’s final yo fully through, and check that you skipped exactly 2 sts on each side.
  • Mesh rounds look uneven: Make sure the tr in Rnds 9 and 11 sit over the sc stitches, not over a chain.
  • The count is off after Rnd 12: Each repeat must use exactly 6 sts. Recount to 72.
  • The scallops ruffle: Use 4 dc per scallop instead of 5.
  • The basket tilts forward: The straps aren’t opposite each other. Re-mark sts 19 and 55.
  • The straps stretch: Add sc edging along both long sides of each strap before sewing.

Care

Hand wash in cool water and lay flat to dry, re-shaping each basket around a roll. Don’t tumble dry.

Final Notes

The measurement chain runs like this:

  • The base reaches 5.5 in (14.0 cm) at 72 dc.
  • The wall rises to 3.1 in (7.9 cm) through two staggered leaf tiers and returns to 72 dc.
  • The rim adds 0.65 in (1.7 cm) with 12 scallops, for a finished basket 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall.
  • Two 22.4 in (56.9 cm) straps link three baskets with 1.6 in (4.1 cm) gaps.
  • The finished organizer hangs about 21.5 in (54.6 cm) long.

Check each link in the chain and the finished piece will hang straight and level.

Happy crocheting!
