Teal Brickwork Hanging Toilet Paper Holder Crochet Pattern

This hanging toilet paper holder is a long, sturdy strip of single crochet with three pockets stacked down the front. The top two are round baskets with offset rectangular windows that look like little brick walls. The bottom pocket is a solid, shallow oval for a spare roll lying on its side.

The whole piece uses one deep teal cotton. The texture provides the interest: dense single crochet on the panel, open windows on the pockets, and a corded crab-stitch edge on every rim.

This pattern uses US crochet terms. The panel measures 7 in (17.8 cm) wide and 25 in (63.5 cm) long including the border. The straps add 2 in (5.1 cm), for a total hanging length of 27 in (68.6 cm).

You will make six pieces: one panel, two straps, two window pockets and one oval pocket. The panel is worked flat in rows and gets a two-round border. The pockets are worked in joined rounds from the base up. Then everything is sewn together.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: 7 in x 25 in (17.8 cm x 63.5 cm), plus 2 in (5.1 cm) strap loops
  • Skill level: Advanced beginner
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Bulky (#5) cotton
  • Hook: 6.0 mm (US J-10)
  • Number of pieces: 6 (1 panel, 2 straps, 2 window pockets, 1 oval pocket)
  • Layout: One vertical panel with three pockets stacked top to bottom
  • Panel size before border: 6 in x 24 in (15.2 cm x 61.0 cm)
  • Border depth: about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) per side
  • Window pocket: 5 in (12.7 cm) base diameter, 3¾ in (9.5 cm) tall
  • Oval pocket: 5½ in x 3 in (14.0 cm x 7.6 cm) base, 3¼ in (8.3 cm) tall

Materials

Choose a firm bulky cotton or cotton blend. Cotton holds its shape under the weight of the rolls and stretches less than acrylic. A smooth, tightly plied yarn gives the crispest window edges.

  • Teal: about 330 g / 400 m (437 yd) of bulky cotton (roughly 120 m / 131 yd per 100 g)

Tools:

  • 6.0 mm (US J-10) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers (at least 6)
  • Locking pins or clips
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Blocking mat and pins

The quantity above includes a margin of about 15% for your swatch, seaming and differences in tension.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • BLO: back loop only
  • MR: magic ring
  • sk: skip
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • rep: repeat
  • rev sc: reverse single crochet (crab stitch)

Reverse single crochet (rev sc): Working left to right (right to left if you are left-handed), insert the hook into the next stitch to the right. Yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through both loops. This makes the twisted, corded edge.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge: 12 sc and 12 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) in rows of sc.

That is 3 stitches and 3 rows per inch. A square gauge matters here because the border and the pocket placement both depend on stitches and rows matching.

Test with the panel first. After Row 12 it should measure 6 in (15.2 cm) wide and 4 in (10.2 cm) tall.

Checkpoints:

  • Panel after Row 72: 24 in (61.0 cm) long
  • Panel after border: 7 in x 25 in (17.8 cm x 63.5 cm)
  • Round base after Rnd 8: 5 to 5¼ in (12.7 to 13.3 cm) across
  • Finished window pocket: 3¾ in (9.5 cm) tall
  • Oval base after Rnd 4: about 5½ in x 3 in (14.0 cm x 7.6 cm)

If your swatch is too big, use a smaller hook. If it is too small, use a larger hook. If the width is right but your rows are too short, add rows until the panel is 24 in (61.0 cm) long. Then work 1 sc into each extra row end in Border Rnd 1.

Back Panel

Ch 19.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (18 sc)

Rows 2–72: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (18 sc)

Check that it measures 6 in x 24 in (15.2 cm x 61.0 cm). Don’t fasten off; go straight to the Border section. Row 1 is the bottom edge, and pocket positions are counted up from Row 1.

Straps (Make 2)

Ch 6.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (5 sc)

Rows 2–18: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (5 sc)

Each strap measures 1⅔ in x 6 in (4.2 cm x 15.2 cm). Fasten off and leave a 16 in (40.6 cm) tail for sewing.

Window Pocket (Make 2)

Work in joined rounds without turning. Mark the first stitch of each round.

Base

Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR, join with sl st to first sc. (6)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (12)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around, join. (18)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around, join. (24)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, *sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around, join. (30)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, *sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around, join. (36)

Rnd 7: Ch 1, *sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around, join. (42)

Rnd 8: Ch 1, *sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around, join. (48)

The base should lie flat and measure 5 to 5¼ in (12.7 to 13.3 cm) across.

Walls

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around, join. (48) The unworked front loops of Rnd 8 form a ridge, which you will use for sewing later.

Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (48)

Rnd 11 (Window Round A): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next st, *ch 4, sk 4 sts, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * 6 more times, ch 4, sk last 4 sts, join to top of beg ch-3. (16 dc + 32 ch = 48 sts; 8 windows)

Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in each dc and into each ch (not around the chain), join. (48)

Rnd 13 (Window Round B, offset): Sl st in next 3 sts, then work as Rnd 11 from “Ch 3.” (16 dc + 32 ch = 48 sts; 8 windows)

The repeat is 6 stitches wide. Shifting the start by 3 stitches puts each pair of posts over the center of a window below, which creates the brickwork look.

Rnd 14: Ch 1, sc in each dc and into each ch, join. (48)

Rnd 15 (Window Round A): Sl st in next 3 sts, then work as Rnd 11 from “Ch 3.” (48; 8 windows) These posts line up with the posts in Rnd 11.

Rnd 16: Ch 1, sc in each dc and into each ch, join. (48)

Rnd 17: Ch 1, rev sc in each st around, join. (48) Fasten off and leave a 30 in (76.2 cm) tail.

From ridge to rim the pocket should measure 3¾ in (9.5 cm). That is five sc rounds (1⅔ in / 4.2 cm), three dc rounds (2 in / 5.1 cm) and the rim.

Solid Oval Pocket (Make 1)

Base

Ch 11.

Rnd 1: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 8 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Rotate and work along the underside of the chain: sc in next 8 ch, join. (3 + 8 + 3 + 8 = 22)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each of next 3 sts, sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in each of next 3 sts, sc in next 8 sts, join. (6 + 8 + 6 + 8 = 28)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 8 sts, rep bracket 3 times, sc in next 8 sts, join. (9 + 8 + 9 + 8 = 34)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, [sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 8 sts, rep bracket 3 times, sc in next 8 sts, join. (12 + 8 + 12 + 8 = 40)

The base should measure about 5½ in x 3 in (14.0 cm x 7.6 cm). Mark both 8-stitch straight sides.

Walls

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around, join. (40)

Rnds 6–13: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (40)

Rnd 14: Ch 1, rev sc in each st around, join. (40) Fasten off and leave a 30 in (76.2 cm) tail.

The pocket should be about 3¼ in (8.3 cm) tall.

Make All Pieces

All pieces are teal:

  • 1 back panel (18 sts x 72 rows)
  • 2 straps (5 sts x 18 rows)
  • 2 window pockets (48 sts around)
  • 1 oval pocket (40 sts around)

Layout, counted in panel rows from the bottom:

Above top [strap]............[strap]
Rows 60-72 [ open panel ]
Rows 48-59 [ WINDOW POCKET (top) ]
Rows 36-47 [ open panel ]
Rows 24-35 [ WINDOW POCKET (middle) ]
Rows 13-23 [ open panel ]
Rows 3-12 [ SOLID OVAL POCKET ]
Rows 1-2 [ bottom margin ]

Joining

Finish the panel border first. Whipstitch with the yarn tails, going through the front layer of the panel only.

Window pockets: Flatten each pocket so one third of it (16 of its 48 stitches) lies against the panel. Mark those 16 stitches on Rnd 16 and the 16 ridge loops directly below them.

  • Middle pocket: Sew the 16 ridge loops to panel sts 2–17 along Row 24, one loop to one stitch. Sew the 16 stitches of Rnd 16 to sts 2–17 along Row 35.
  • Top pocket: Sew it the same way along Row 48 and Row 59.
  • Both pockets: Sew a short vertical seam at each side, along panel st 2 and panel st 17.

The pocket wall from Rnd 9 to Rnd 16 is 11 sc-heights tall, because each dc round counts as two. That matches the 11 rows between the two seam lines, so the back wall lies flat.

Oval pocket: Its back is the 8 straight stitches plus 3 at each end, for 14 stitches. Sew those 14 ridge loops to panel sts 3–16 along Row 3. Sew the matching 14 stitches of Rnd 13 to sts 3–16 along Row 12. The 9 rows between the seams match Rnds 5–13. Add short side seams.

Straps: Line the straps up with panel sts 1–5 and sts 14–18. Overlap one end 1 in (2.5 cm) on the front of the top edge and sew around all four sides. Fold the strap over and sew the other end 1 in (2.5 cm) down the back. That leaves 4 in (10.2 cm) of strap in the loop, which rises 2 in (5.1 cm) above the panel.

Tension: Pull each stitch snug enough to close the gap but not so tight that the panel dimples.

Size checkpoint: The piece still lies flat at 7 in x 25 in (17.8 cm x 63.5 cm), with the pockets centered.

Border

Border gauge: 3 sc per inch along stitches and along row ends, the same as the body.

After Row 72, ch 1 and turn.

Rnd 1:

  • Top: 3 sc in first st, sc in next 16 sts, 3 sc in last st. (22)
  • Side: Sc in each row end from Row 71 down to Row 2. (70)
  • Bottom (along the foundation chain): 3 sc in first ch, sc in next 16 ch, 3 sc in last ch. (22)
  • Other side: Sc in each row end from Row 2 up to Row 71. (70)
  • Join to first sc.

Count: 176 stitches worked one per stitch or row end (18 + 70 + 18 + 70), plus 8 extra corner stitches (2 per corner), for 184. Per side that is 22 top, 70 side, 22 bottom and 70 side. The corner groups are counted in the top and bottom totals.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, rev sc in each st around, join. (184) Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Why the math works: Because the gauge is square, one sc per stitch and one per row end keeps each edge at its true length. The 3-sc corners turn the corners without cupping. The two rounds add about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) per side, so 6 in becomes 7 in (17.8 cm) and 24 in becomes 25 in (63.5 cm).

Final Blocking

  1. Soak the finished holder in cool water, then press out the water in a towel without wringing.
  2. Pin the panel flat to 7 in x 25 in (17.8 cm x 63.5 cm).
  3. Fill each pocket with a roll or a rolled towel so the walls dry round.
  4. Ease each window into a neat rectangle with your fingers.
  5. Let it dry completely (24–48 hours).
  6. Unpin it and hang it on the bar.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • The panel is 7 in x 25 in (17.8 cm x 63.5 cm) and lies flat.
  • The border has 184 stitches and neat corners.
  • Each window round has 48 stitches and 8 windows.
  • The middle window round is offset on both pockets.
  • The oval pocket has 40 stitches and is 3¼ in (8.3 cm) tall.
  • The pockets sit at Rows 3–12, 24–35 and 48–59.
  • Both straps are the same length and secure.
  • All ends are woven in on the back.

Troubleshooting

  • The windows aren’t offset: The 3 slip stitches were missed at the start of Rnd 13. Rework that round.
  • The base cups or ruffles: Recount each round against the totals above.
  • A pocket sags: Add a third seam halfway up its back wall.
  • The border waves: Your rows are taller than your gauge. Skip 1 row end every 10 rows on both sides.
  • The straps stretch: Backstitch across each strap just above the panel edge.

Care

Hand wash in cool water, or machine wash on a gentle cycle inside a laundry bag. Reshape and dry flat.

Final Notes

The measurement chain: gauge is 3 stitches and 3 rows per inch. That makes the 18 x 72 panel 6 in x 24 in (15.2 cm x 61.0 cm). The 184-stitch border brings it to 7 in x 25 in (17.8 cm x 63.5 cm). The 48-stitch window pockets and the 40-stitch oval pocket are sewn on stitch for stitch at fixed rows, and the straps add 2 in (5.1 cm).

Happy crocheting!
