The Cornflower Meadow Window Valance brings a cottage garden to your window. Sixteen lacy squares each hold a periwinkle-blue flower with twelve long loop petals around a cream center. A sage-green leaf fan sits in each corner, and an airy cream mesh frames every flower.
The squares are joined in a 4 x 4 grid and finished with a slim cream border. Eight thick loops along the top slide over a curtain rod. Each column ends in a V-shaped point with a tassel in blue or cream. The finished panel body measures 23 in x 25.1 in (58.4 cm x 63.8 cm), including the top band and points. The loops and tassels add extra length.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. You will crochet 16 identical squares, join them with flat slip stitch seams and work two border rounds. Then you add the hanging loops along the top, a point under each column and four tassels.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished panel body: 23 in wide x 25.1 in long (58.4 cm x 63.8 cm), points included
- Hanging loops: rise about 2 in (5.1 cm) above the top edge
- Tassels: 4 in (10.2 cm) long
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton
- Hook: 4.5 mm (US 7)
- Number of pieces: 16 squares
- Layout: 4 squares wide x 4 squares tall
- Single square: 5.5 in x 5.5 in (14.0 cm x 14.0 cm), 23 sc per side
- Size before border: 22 in x 22 in (55.9 cm x 55.9 cm)
- Border depth: 0.5 in (1.3 cm)
Materials
Choose a smooth, mercerized or combed worsted-weight cotton. Cotton shows the petal outlines and mesh clearly and hangs straight in a window. Avoid fuzzy blends, because they blur the lace.
- Cream: 250 g, approx. 425 m
- Periwinkle blue: 130 g, approx. 221 m
- Sage green: 40 g, approx. 68 m
These quantities include a safety margin of about 10–15%.
Tools:
– 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Locking stitch markers
– Scissors
– A 4 in (10.2 cm) piece of cardboard for the tassels
– Blocking mats, rust-proof pins and a spray bottle
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- tr: treble crochet
- sc3tog: single crochet 3 together
- sp(s): space(s)
- st(s): stitch(es)
- BLO: back loop only
- RS: right side
Special stitch: leaf cluster (3-tr cl). Yarn over twice, insert your hook in the space, pull up a loop, (yarn over, pull through 2) twice. Repeat from * to * 2 more times in the same space, so you have 4 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge in sc: 17 sts x 20 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm).
Make one complete square before you commit to all sixteen. Measure it at these checkpoints:
- After Rnd 1: center ring about 1.25 in (3.2 cm) across
- After Rnd 3: flower about 3.75 in (9.5 cm) across
- After Rnd 4: about 4.25 in (10.8 cm) across
- After Rnd 6: about 5 in (12.7 cm) square
- After Rnd 7: 5.5 in (14.0 cm) square, give or take 0.25 in (0.6 cm)
If your square is too big, go down to a 4 mm hook. If it is too small, go up to a 5 mm hook. Every later measurement depends on this square, so match it before moving on.

Square Motif (Make 16)
Rnd 1 (Cream)
Make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then work 23 dc in the ring. Sl st to the top of the ch-3. Pull the ring closed.
(24 dc) Fasten off.
Rnd 2 (Blue): Petal Loops
Join blue with a sl st in any dc.
Ch 12, sl st in the same dc (loop made), sl st in each of the next 2 dc. Repeat from * to * 11 more times. Your last sl st lands in the first dc.
(12 ch-12 loops) Each loop sits on every other dc.
Rnd 3 (Blue): Petal Outline
Sl st into the first ch-12 loop. In each loop, work (8 sc, ch 2, 8 sc). Skip the sl sts between the loops.
Sl st to the first sc.
(192 sc and 12 ch-2 tips; 16 sc per petal) Fasten off.
Working around the folded chain gives each petal its long outlined shape with a narrow open center.
Rnd 4 (Cream): Mesh Ring
Join cream with a sc in any ch-2 petal tip.
Ch 5, sc in the next ch-2 tip. Repeat from * to * 10 more times, then ch 5 and sl st to the first sc.
(12 sc and 12 ch-5 sps)
Mark every third ch-5 sp, starting with the first one. These 4 marked spaces are the corners. Each side now has 2 unmarked side spaces between corners.
Fasten off.
Rnd 5 (Green): Corner Leaves, Worked in 4 Sections
Join green in a marked corner ch-5 sp. Ch 3 (does not count), then work (3-tr cl, ch 3, 3-tr cl, ch 3, 3-tr cl) in the same space. Fasten off.
Repeat in each of the other 3 corner spaces.
(4 leaf fans, each with 3 clusters and 2 ch-3 sps)
Rnd 6 (Cream): Lace Frame
Join cream in the top of the middle cluster of any corner fan, and work (sc, ch 3, sc) there.
Work the following side sequence:
– ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 sp of the fan
– ch 3, sc in the top of the third cluster
– ch 3, sc in the first side ch-5 sp
– ch 3, sc in the second side ch-5 sp
– ch 3, sc in the top of the first cluster of the next fan
– ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 sp
– ch 3, then work (sc, ch 3, sc) in the top of the middle cluster.
Repeat from * to * around, but on the final repeat, sl st to the first sc instead of working the last corner.
(7 ch-3 sps per side, plus 4 corner ch-3 sps; 32 sc in total)
Rnd 7 (Cream): Squaring Round
Sl st into the corner ch-3 sp. Ch 1 and work (sc, ch 2, sc) in the same space.
Work 3 sc in each of the next 7 ch-3 sps, then (sc, ch 2, sc) in the corner sp. Repeat around, omitting the last corner, and sl st to the first sc.
Per side: 1 corner sc + 21 sc + 1 corner sc = 23 sc
Total: 4 x 23 = 92 sc and 4 corner ch-2 sps
Fasten off and leave a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail.
Make All Pieces
Make 16 squares in total. Each square uses all three colors:
- Cream: Rnds 1, 4, 6 and 7
- Blue: Rnds 2 and 3
- Green: Rnd 5
Weave in all ends except the last cream tail. Steam-block each square to 5.5 in (14.0 cm) before joining.
Layout grid (S = square):
S S S S
S S S S
S S S S
S S S S
Joining
Use a flat slip stitch seam in cream.
- Place two squares side by side with the right sides facing up.
- Start in the matching corner ch-2 sps and sl st through both corner spaces.
- Sl st through the BLO of each pair of matching sc, for 23 pairs.
- Finish in the matching corner ch-2 sps.
Join each horizontal row of 4 squares first, then join the 4 rows to each other.
The seam works stitch to stitch: each sc meets one sc. Squares with 23 sts per side match exactly, and the seam adds no stitches.
Keep your slip stitches as loose as the fabric, about the same height as a sc. If you work them tight, the seams will pucker and pull the mesh out of shape.
Size checkpoint: two joined squares should measure 11 in (27.9 cm). The full grid should measure 22 in x 22 in (55.9 cm x 55.9 cm).
Border
The border uses the same gauge as the squares, about 4.2 sts per inch (17 sts per 4 in / 10.2 cm).
Border Rnd 1 (Cream, sc)
Join cream with a sc in the first sc after any outer corner ch-2 sp.
Sc in each sc across. At each seam, skip both joined corner ch-2 sps and go straight to the next square’s first sc. At each of the 4 outer corners, ch 2.
Sl st to the first sc.
Per side: 4 squares x 23 sc = 92 sc
Total: 368 sc and 4 corner ch-2 sps
Border Rnd 2 (Cream, hdc)
Sl st into the next sc. Ch 2 (does not count), then hdc in the same st.
Hdc in each sc around, and ch 2 over each outer corner.
Sl st to the first hdc.
Per side: 92 hdc
Total: 368 hdc
Fasten off.
Why the math works: each square side has exactly 23 sc, and 4 squares make 92 sc per side. The seams add nothing, and the corner chains turn each corner without adding stitches. That keeps all 92 stitches lined up with the squares, so each column has exactly 23 stitches under it for the points.
Top Band and Hanging Loops
Row 1: With the RS facing, join cream in the first hdc of the top edge. Ch 1 and work 1 sc in each hdc across.
(92 sc) Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1. Sc in the first 2 sc. Ch 18, skip 4 sc, sc in the next 8 sc. Repeat from * to * 6 more times. Ch 18, skip 4 sc, sc in the last 2 sc. Turn.
Check: 2 + 7 x (4 + 8) + 4 + 2 = 92 sts used, with 8 loops
Row 3: Ch 1. Sc in each sc, and work 22 sc in each ch-18 loop.
(60 sc on the band + 8 x 22 sc on the loops = 236 sc) Fasten off.
Each chain loop is about 4.5 in (11.4 cm) long. That fits a rod up to 1 in (2.5 cm) thick.
Bottom Points (Make 4)
With the RS facing, join cream in the first hdc on the bottom edge under column 1.
- Row 1: ch 1, sc in the next 23 hdc. (23) Turn.
- Row 2: ch 1, sc3tog, sc in the next 17 sts, sc3tog. (19) Turn.
- Row 3: ch 1, sc3tog, sc in the next 13 sts, sc3tog. (15) Turn.
- Row 4: ch 1, sc3tog, sc in the next 9 sts, sc3tog. (11) Turn.
- Row 5: ch 1, sc3tog, sc in the next 5 sts, sc3tog. (7) Turn.
- Row 6: ch 1, sc3tog, sc in the next st, sc3tog. (3) Turn.
- Row 7: ch 1, sc3tog. (1)
Fasten off. Repeat in the next 23 hdc for each of columns 2–4.
Each point is about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) deep.
Tassels (Make 4)
Make blue tassels for columns 1 and 3 and cream tassels for columns 2 and 4.
- Wrap the yarn 30 times around the 4 in (10.2 cm) card.
- Tie the top with a 10 in (25.4 cm) strand.
- Cut the bottom loops.
- Wrap the neck 0.75 in (1.9 cm) below the top with the contrasting color.
- Trim the ends evenly.
Tie a tassel to the tip of each point.
Final Blocking
- Lightly mist the whole valance until it is damp, not wet.
- Lay it flat with the right side up.
- Pin the body to 23 in (58.4 cm) wide. Check that each square measures 5.5 in (14.0 cm).
- Pin out the corners of each petal and leaf fan, and open up the mesh spaces.
- Pin each point straight and centered under its column.
- Let it dry completely, then unpin it.
- Comb the tassels and trim them to 4 in (10.2 cm).
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Each square has 12 petals, 4 leaf fans and 23 sc per side.
- Each row of joined squares measures 22 in (55.9 cm) before the border.
- Each border side has 92 sts.
- There are 8 evenly spaced loops, and each has 22 sc.
- All 4 points end in a single stitch, centered under their columns.
- The tassels alternate blue, cream, blue, cream.
- All ends are woven in securely.
Troubleshooting
Petals ruffle: use 7 sc on each side of the tip instead of 8, and keep the total consistent across all squares.
Petals look skinny: loosen the ch-12 so the outlining stitches have room.
Square won’t lie flat: your ch-3 or ch-5 spaces are too tight. Chain more loosely.
Seams pucker: rework them with looser slip stitches, or use a hook one size larger for joining only.
Points lean: check that you made exactly 23 sc in Row 1 and that each sc3tog sits at the very edge.
Loops are too small for your rod: use ch 22 and work 26 sc around each loop. The loop row still uses the same 92 stitches.
Care
Hand wash in cool water, roll the valance in a towel to remove excess water and dry it flat. Re-pin it to the blocked measurements if needed.

Final Notes
Everything depends on the square:
- One square: 5.5 in (14.0 cm) with 23 sc per side.
- Four squares across: 22 in (55.9 cm) with 92 sts per side.
- Two border rounds: 23 in (58.4 cm) wide.
- Top band and points: 25.1 in (63.8 cm) long.
Match the first square and everything else falls into place.
Happy crocheting!
