The Bluebell Butterfly Car Visor Organizer is a slim, useful piece that keeps your sunglasses and cards in reach without cluttering the dashboard. A dense denim-blue panel straps onto the sun visor. Two stacked pockets sit on the right side, and a cream butterfly with gold details covers the left.
The palette is calm and cozy: denim blue for the body, cream for the wings, and a warm tan-gold for the wing centers, the body and all the embroidery. The style is cottage-meets-practical, with tight single crochet texture so the organizer holds its shape in a warm car.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished organizer measures 12.5 x 5.5 in (31.8 x 14.0 cm), not counting the straps.
You will crochet one back panel in rows, add a two-round border, then make two flat pockets, two button straps and a four-wing butterfly. Everything is sewn onto the panel, and the embroidery is added last.

Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 sc and 16 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) in single crochet rows.
Make the card pocket first and use it as your gauge piece. Before its edging, 20 sts x 12 rows should measure 5 x 3 in (12.7 x 7.6 cm).
Checkpoints:
– Card pocket before edging: 5 x 3 in (12.7 x 7.6 cm)
– Panel after Row 18: 11.5 x 4.5 in (29.2 x 11.4 cm)
– Panel after border Round 1: 12 x 5 in (30.5 x 12.7 cm)
– Panel after border Round 2: 12.5 x 5.5 in (31.8 x 14.0 cm)
Too big? Go down to a 3.75 mm hook. Too small? Go up to a 4.5 mm hook. Change the hook, not the stitch counts. All the placement math depends on 4 sts and 4 rows per inch (2.5 cm).

Wrap the tail tightly around the body 6 times, evenly spaced, to make segments. Pull the last wrap firmly near one end to form the head.
Size: about 2.5 in (6.4 cm) long.
Part 5: Assembly and Embroidery
Do this after the panel border is finished.
- Card pocket: Lay the panel RS up. Pin the card pocket so its right edge sits along the inner edge of the border on the right, and its bottom sits along the inner edge of the bottom border. Whipstitch the sides and bottom through the edging sts. Leave the top open.
- Glasses pocket: Pin it on top of the card pocket, lined up on the same right and bottom edges. Sew the sides and bottom through all layers. The card pocket stays visible for 1 in (2.5 cm) above it.
- Butterfly: Center the body 3.5 in (8.9 cm) from the panel’s left edge, standing upright. Tuck the narrow ends of the upper wings under the body so they angle up and out. Tuck the lower wings below them so they angle down and out. Pin, then sew around each wing’s Rnd 1 boundary so the cream outer rounds lift a little. Sew the body down the middle on top.
- Straps: On the back of the panel, overlap the first 4 rows (1 in / 2.5 cm) of each strap onto the top edge. Place them 1.5 in (3.8 cm) in from each short side, with each strap’s foundation edge level with the top of border Rnd 1. Sew a box shape through the overlap. Sew one button on the back of the panel below each strap, 0.75 in (1.9 cm) up from the bottom edge.
- Embroidery (tan-gold):
- Backstitch two antennae 1 in (2.5 cm) long from the head and curl the tips.
- Chain-stitch curling vines below and beside the butterfly.
- Add about six five-petal lazy-daisy stars.
- Scatter about eight French knots.
Fit: Wrap each strap over the top of the visor, down the back, under the bottom edge, and button it on the back of the panel.
Border
Use the panel’s working yarn. Border gauge matches the body: 4 sc per 1 in (2.5 cm). Each round adds 0.25 in (0.6 cm) on every side.
Round 1: Ch 1. Do not turn.
– Sc in each st across Row 18 (46 sc), ch 1.
– Work 1 sc in the end of each row down the side (18 sc), ch 1.
– Work 1 sc in each foundation ch (46 sc), ch 1.
– Work 1 sc in each row end up the other side (18 sc), ch 1.
– Join.
Total: 128 sc (46 / 18 / 46 / 18) + 4 corner ch-1 sps.
Round 2: Ch 1.
– Sc in each sc.
– Work (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner ch-1 sp.
– Join.
Total: 136 sc (48 / 20 / 48 / 20) + 4 corner ch-1 sps.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Why the math works: Each corner ch-1 takes up about one stitch width. After Round 1, a long side is 46 sc + 2 corners = 48 widths, and 48 ÷ 4 = 12 in (30.5 cm). After Round 2, it is 48 sc + 2 corners = 50 widths, which gives 12.5 in (31.8 cm). A short side goes from 18 + 2 = 20 widths, or 5 in (12.7 cm), to 20 + 2 = 22 widths, or 5.5 in (14.0 cm). The pocket edgings use the same rule: 22 x 14 widths gives 5.5 x 3.5 in (14.0 x 8.9 cm), and 22 x 10 widths gives 5.5 x 2.5 in (14.0 x 6.4 cm).
Final Blocking
- Weave in every end before you block.
- Lay the organizer face down on a blocking mat.
- Pin the panel to 12.5 x 5.5 in (31.8 x 14.0 cm). Keep the edges straight and the corners square.
- Spray the panel and pockets evenly until damp, not soaked.
- Turn it face up and gently shape the butterfly wings so they curve outward. Do not flatten the raised wings.
- Pin each strap straight at 1.5 in (3.8 cm) wide.
- Let it dry completely, ideally for 24 hours.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Panel measures 12.5 x 5.5 in (31.8 x 14.0 cm)
- Border Round 2 has 48 / 20 / 48 / 20 sc
- Both pockets sit flush on the right and bottom inner border edges
- About 1 in (2.5 cm) of the card pocket shows above the glasses pocket
- Pocket tops are open and unstitched
- Wings are symmetrical, with tan-gold centers showing
- Body segments are evenly wrapped
- Buttons line up with the buttonholes
- No loose ends on the front
Troubleshooting
Panel is wavy: Your foundation chain was too tight. Redo it with a hook one size larger, or chain more loosely.
Border corners curl: Check that each corner has exactly (sc, ch 1, sc) and not 3 sc.
Pockets gape: Sew the pocket edges with shorter stitches, about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) apart.
Wings look lopsided: Recount Rnd 3. The dc increases must sit at the outer lobe, away from the body.
Straps are too short: Add rows before the buttonhole, at 4 rows per 1 in (2.5 cm).
Embroidery puckers: Loosen your tension and stitch over the surface of the fabric only.
Care
Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, or hand wash cool and lay flat to dry. Don’t leave it in direct summer sun for long periods, because the blue can fade.

Final Notes
Here is the measurement chain for the whole organizer:
- Gauge: 16 sc and 16 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm)
- Panel: 46 sts x 18 rows = 11.5 x 4.5 in (29.2 x 11.4 cm)
- After two border rounds: 12.5 x 5.5 in (31.8 x 14.0 cm)
- Pockets: 5.5 x 3.5 in (14.0 x 8.9 cm) and 5.5 x 2.5 in (14.0 x 6.4 cm), placed on the right
- Butterfly: centered 3.5 in (8.9 cm) from the left edge
If your gauge holds at every checkpoint, the pockets and appliqué will fit just as planned.
Happy crocheting!
