Bluebell Vine Lace Bedspread Crochet Pattern

The Bluebell Vine Lace Bedspread is a romantic lace coverlet made from square motifs. Each motif has a ribbed six-petal flower framed by leafy vines. Once the motifs are joined, the flowers line up in calm rows across the bed, and open lace lets the sheets show through.

The sample is worked in one heathered denim-blue cotton. A single color keeps the texture in focus: raised petal ribs, little folded leaves and a scalloped fan edge. The style is farmhouse-cottage, light enough for warm months and pretty layered over a white quilt.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished bedspread measures 75 x 91 in (190.5 x 231.1 cm). That is 72 x 88 in (182.9 x 223.5 cm) of joined motifs plus a 1.5 in (3.8 cm) border.

Construction is simple and repetitive. You crochet 99 identical motifs in the round, join them with slip stitches into a grid 9 motifs wide and 11 long, then work a two-round scalloped border.

  • Finished size: 75 x 91 in (190.5 x 231.1 cm)
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4), cotton or cotton blend
  • Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
  • Number of pieces: 99 square motifs
  • Layout: 9 motifs across x 11 motifs long

  • Border depth: 1.5 in (3.8 cm) on every side

Materials

Yarn: Use a smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend with good stitch definition, so the petal ribs and leaves stand out. A slightly heathered shade gives the soft, washed-denim look of the sample.

  • Denim Blue: 2,500 g (approximately 4,250 m), based on 100 g / 170 m skeins (25 skeins)

That works out to about 20 g (34 m) per motif, plus yarn for seams and the border. The quantity includes a margin of roughly 10%. Buy all skeins from one dye lot.

Tools:
– 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Stitch markers
– Tape measure
– Blocking mats and rust-proof pins
– Spray bottle

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • FPdc: front post double crochet
  • sp(s): space(s)
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • RS / WS: right side / wrong side

Special stitch: Leaf. Ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, sc in last ch. This makes a small pointed leaf on a stem.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Make one full motif before starting the rest, block it lightly and measure it. Your target is 33 sc = 8 in (20.3 cm) along one side of Round 11, corner stitches included.

Checkpoints for one motif:

  • After Round 1: 1.75 in (4.4 cm) across
  • After Round 3: 3 in (7.6 cm) across
  • After Round 5: 4.75 in (12.1 cm) from petal tip to petal tip
  • After Round 8: 6 in (15.2 cm) square
  • After Round 9: 6.75 in (17.1 cm) square
  • After Round 10: 7.5 in (19.1 cm) square
  • After Round 11: 8 in (20.3 cm) square

If the motif comes out larger than 8 in (20.3 cm), go down half a hook size. If it’s smaller, go up half a hook size. Each 0.25 in (0.6 cm) of error per motif adds about 2.25 in (5.7 cm) across the width, so it’s worth getting this right.

Motif (Make 99)

Flower

Round 1: Ch 6, sl st to the first ch to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 17 dc into the ring, then sl st to the top of the ch-3. (18 dc) The open ring forms the small center hole.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in the same st, ch 3, skip 2 dc. Sc in next dc, ch 3, skip 2 dc. Repeat from * 4 more times, then sl st to the first sc. (6 sc, 6 ch-3 sps)

Round 3: Sl st into the first ch-3 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 4 dc in the same sp, ch 1. Work 5 dc in the next ch-3 sp, ch 1. Repeat from * 4 more times, then sl st to the top of the ch-3. (30 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)

Round 4 (ribs): Ch 2 (doesn’t count as a stitch). Work 2 FPdc around the first dc of the group, 1 FPdc around each of the next 3 dc, 2 FPdc around the last dc of the group, then ch 1 and skip the ch-1 sp. Repeat from * 5 more times, then sl st to the first FPdc. (42 FPdc in 6 groups of 7, 6 ch-1 sps) Stacking post stitches on top of the dc creates the raised ribs that run outward through each petal.

Round 5 (petal tips): Sl st into the next ch-1 sp. Sc in the ch-1 sp, skip the first FPdc of the group, hdc in next st, dc in next st, (tr, ch 1, tr) in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, skip the last FPdc. Repeat from * 5 more times, then sl st to the first sc. (42 sts, 6 ch-1 tip sps) Each petal is now rounded, with a deep notch at the sc between petals.

Leafy Vine Frame

Round 6: Sl st in the next hdc, dc and tr, then into the ch-1 tip sp. Ch 1, sc in the same sp, ch 6, sc in the next notch sc, ch 6. Sc in the next tip ch-1 sp, ch 6, sc in the next notch sc, ch 6. Repeat from * 4 more times, then sl st to the first sc. (12 sc, 12 ch-6 loops)

Number the loops 1–12. Loops 1, 4, 7 and 10 become corners.

Round 7: Sl st into loop 1. Ch 4 (counts as tr), then (2 tr, ch 3, 3 tr) in the same loop to make a corner. Ch 3, (sc, Leaf, sc) in next loop, ch 3, (sc, Leaf, sc) in next loop, ch 3, (3 tr, ch 3, 3 tr) in next loop. Repeat from * 2 more times. Ch 3, (sc, Leaf, sc) in next loop, ch 3, (sc, Leaf, sc) in next loop, ch 3, then sl st to the top of the ch-4.

(24 tr, 16 sc, 8 Leaves, 12 side ch-3 sps, 4 corner ch-3 sps)

Fold every Leaf toward the motif center, on the RS, before you continue.

Round 8 (vine bar): Sl st in the next 2 tr and into the corner ch-3 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same sp. Work each side like this:

  • dc in each of the next 3 tr
  • 3 dc in the next ch-3 sp
  • dc in each of the next 2 sc (the Leaf stays folded in front)
  • 3 dc in the next ch-3 sp
  • dc in each of the next 2 sc
  • 3 dc in the next ch-3 sp
  • dc in each of the next 3 tr
  • (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the corner sp

Skip the last corner on the final side, then sl st to the top of the ch-3.

Count per side between corner ch-2 sps: 2 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 23 dc. (92 dc total, 4 ch-2 corner sps)

Round 9 (mesh): Sl st in the next dc and into the corner ch-2 sp. Ch 6 (counts as dc + ch 3), dc in the same sp. On each side, work ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc 7 times, then ch 2, skip the last 2 dc and work (dc, ch 3, dc) in the corner sp. On the final side, omit the last corner and sl st to the 3rd ch of the ch-6.

Each side uses all 23 dc: 8 skipped pairs (16) plus 7 worked dc.

(36 dc, 32 ch-2 sps, 4 ch-3 corner sps)

Round 10: Sl st into the corner ch-3 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), then (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same sp. On each side:

  • dc in the next dc
  • [2 dc in the next ch-2 sp, dc in the next dc] 7 times
  • 2 dc in the last ch-2 sp
  • dc in the next dc
  • (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the corner sp

On the final side, omit the last corner and sl st to the top of the ch-3.

Count per side between corner ch-2 sps: 2 + 1 + 21 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 29 dc. (116 dc, 4 ch-2 sps)

Round 11: Sl st in the next dc and into the corner ch-2 sp. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same sp. Work sc in each dc to the next corner, then 3 sc in each corner ch-2 sp. Sl st to the first sc. (128 sc)

The middle sc of each 3-sc group is the corner stitch. Each side has 33 sts counted from corner stitch to corner stitch, including both corners: 1 + 1 + 29 + 1 + 1 = 33. As a check, 4 x (33 − 1) = 128.

Fasten off and weave in the ends. The motif measures 8 in (20.3 cm) square.

Make All Pieces

Make 99 motifs in Denim Blue, all with the same hook and the same tension. Steam or wet-block each motif to 8 in (20.3 cm) before joining. Same-size motifs make joining much easier.

Joining

Method: slip-stitch seam. Hold 2 motifs RS together with their edges matched. Work through both loops of both layers.

Stitch-to-stitch logic: Each side has 33 sts, corners included, so match them 1:1. Start with a sl st through the two corner stitches, work 1 sl st through each matched pair, and end with a sl st through the opposite corners. That’s 33 sl st per seam, with nothing added and nothing skipped.

Order:
1. Join motifs into 9 vertical strips of 11 motifs each. Each strip has 10 short seams of 33 sl st.
2. Join the strips side by side with 8 long seams. Each long seam is 11 x 33 = 363 sl st.

Where four corners meet, work through the two corner stitches facing you and keep going. Don’t add a chain.

Tension: Keep the sl st as loose as the sc in the motifs. If seams pucker, go up one hook size for joining only.

Size checkpoint: Lay the joined piece flat. It should measure 72 x 88 in (182.9 x 223.5 cm), because 9 x 8 in = 72 in and 11 x 8 in = 88 in.

Border

Border gauge: Same as the motif, 33 sts = 8 in (20.3 cm).

Starting counts: Each motif side has 33 sts, corners included, and every corner stitch at a seam gets its own border stitch.
– Short sides: 9 x 33 = 297 sts
– Long sides: 11 x 33 = 363 sts

As a check, 297 sts ÷ (33 sts / 8 in) = 72 in, and 363 ÷ 33 x 8 = 88 in.

Round 1: With the RS facing, join yarn in one outer corner stitch. Ch 1, then work (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in that corner stitch. Work 1 sc in every edge stitch to the next outer corner stitch, and work (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in each outer corner stitch. Sl st to the first sc.

Each outer corner stitch was already counted once on each side it belongs to. It now gives 2 sc to each of those sides, which adds 1 stitch per end:
– Short sides: 297 + 2 = 299 sc between the corner ch-2 sps
– Long sides: 363 + 2 = 365 sc between the corner ch-2 sps
– Total: 2 x 299 + 2 x 365 = 1,328 sc, plus 4 ch-2 sps

Round 2 (fan scallops): Sl st into the corner ch-2 sp and work 9 dc in that sp. On each side, work skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 sts, 7 dc in next st across the side. End with skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 sts, then 9 dc in the corner sp. On the final side, omit the last corner fan and sl st to the top of the first dc. Fasten off.

  • Short sides: 49 fans and 50 sc, because 49 x 6 + 5 = 299
  • Long sides: 60 fans and 61 sc, because 60 x 6 + 5 = 365

Why the math works: Each scallop uses 6 sts. A side that starts and ends with “skip 2, sc, skip 2” needs a count of 6k + 5. The motif side (33), the layout (9 and 11) and the corners in Round 1 were all chosen to give 299 and 365, so every side ends with a matching sc next to each corner fan. Each scallop is about 1.45 in (3.7 cm) wide.

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends, running each tail through matching-colored stitches for at least 1 in (2.5 cm).
  2. Soak the bedspread in cool water with a little wool wash for 15 minutes.
  3. Gently press out the water. Don’t wring it. Roll it in towels to remove more moisture.
  4. Lay it flat on mats or a clean sheet and pin it to 72 x 88 in (182.9 x 223.5 cm) at the seam lines.
  5. Pin out each scallop and corner fan. The outer edge should reach 75 x 91 in (190.5 x 231.1 cm).
  6. Open each petal tip and each Leaf with your fingers so the leaves lie flat.
  7. Let it dry completely before you unpin it.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Every motif is 8 in (20.3 cm) square, with 33 sts per side.
  • All flowers have 6 petals with clear raised ribs.
  • Every motif has 8 Leaves, folded to the RS.
  • The seams lie flat, with no puckering or gapping.
  • The joined body measures 72 x 88 in (182.9 x 223.5 cm).
  • The short sides have 49 fans and the long sides have 60, plus 4 corner fans.
  • The finished size is 75 x 91 in (190.5 x 231.1 cm).
  • All ends are secure and hidden.

Troubleshooting

Petals cup or ruffle: If they cup, your Round 4 post stitches are too tight, so loosen them. If they ruffle, check that you skipped the first and last FPdc in Round 5.

Leaves stick outward: Fold them to the RS before Round 8 and pin them when blocking.

The motif isn’t square: Recount Round 8. Each side must have 23 dc between the corner sps.

Seams pull in: Go up one hook size for joining.

The border ripples: Recount Round 1. A short side must have 299 sc and a long side 365.

The border cups: Your fans are too tight. Work the dc a little taller.

Care

Hand wash in cool water, or machine wash on a delicate cycle inside a large mesh bag. Lay flat to dry, reshaping the scallops while the bedspread is damp.

Final Notes

The whole bedspread comes from one measurement chain:
– Each motif side is 33 sts = 8 in (20.3 cm).
– 9 x 11 motifs give 297 x 363 sts, or 72 x 88 in (182.9 x 223.5 cm).
– Border Round 1 brings the sides to 299 and 365 sc, which fit the 6-stitch fans exactly.
– The 1.5 in (3.8 cm) border brings the total to 75 x 91 in (190.5 x 231.1 cm).

Check your first motif carefully, and everything after it falls into place. Happy crocheting!
