Cranberry Bloom Strand Curtain Crochet Pattern

This strand curtain turns a window into a soft, graphic screen of flowers and diamonds. Each hanging strand repeats a simple rhythm: an 8-petal flower, two stuffed beads, a lacy diamond, and two more beads. Short cream chains link the pieces, and each strand ends in a red tassel.

The palette is just two colors, deep cranberry red and cream. The flowers have cream centers, solid red petals, and a crisp cream edge. The diamonds reverse the idea: a lacy cream center framed by a solid red border. Two-tone beads tie the two colors together along every strand.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. One strand measures about 82 in (208.3 cm) from the top of the tab to the tip of the tassel. One panel of six strands is about 29.25 in (74.3 cm) wide. The pattern makes a pair of panels, 12 strands in total.

Construction is modular. You make the flowers, diamonds, beads, tabs, and tassels as separate pieces, then link them top to bottom with chain links. Nothing is sewn edge to edge, so the curtain stays light and moves with the air.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: each strand about 82 in (208.3 cm) long; each panel about 29.25 in (74.3 cm) wide
  • Skill level: Intermediate (simple stitches, many repeats, careful assembly)
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: DK (#3) cotton or cotton blend
  • Hook: 3.5 mm (E-4)
  • Number of pieces: 2 panels x 6 strands = 12 strands; 48 flowers, 48 diamonds, 192 beads, 12 tabs, 12 tassels, 300 links

Materials

Choose a smooth, mercerized or matte cotton in DK weight. Cotton keeps the petal points and diamond corners sharp, and it doesn’t stretch much when hanging. The amounts below assume about 120 m per 50 g.

  • Cranberry red: 550 g (1,320 m)
  • Cream: 600 g (1,440 m)
  • Polyester fiberfill, about 200 g
  • 3.5 mm (E-4) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle with a large eye
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Stiff card 3.5 in (8.9 cm) tall for tassels
  • Measuring tape, rustproof pins, and a blocking board

Quantities include a margin of roughly 15% for swatching, joins, and weaving in ends.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

Special stitch – Link: Join cream with a sl st in the stated space, ch 5, and fasten off, leaving an 8 in (20.3 cm) tail. A finished link measures about 1 in (2.5 cm).

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge: 20 sc and 22 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) in sc worked in rows.

Make one flower, one diamond, and one bead before starting production. Measure them flat without stretching.

  • Flower: Rnd 2 is 1.6 in (4.1 cm) across; Rnd 3 is 2.4 in (6.1 cm); Rnd 4 is 3.85 in (9.8 cm) tip to tip; Rnd 5 is 4.25 in (10.8 cm).
  • Diamond: Rnd 3 is 2.2 in (5.6 cm) per side; Rnd 5 is 3 in (7.6 cm) per side.
  • Bead: about 1.1 in (2.8 cm) across after stuffing.

If your pieces are too big, go down 0.25 mm in hook size. If they’re too small, go up 0.25 mm. Small differences matter here because they repeat four times down every strand.

Flower (Make 48)

Rnd 1 (cream): MR, ch 3 (counts as dc), 15 dc in ring, join with sl st to top of ch-3. (16 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, join. (32 dc) Fasten off cream.

Rnd 3 (red): Join red with sl st in any st, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 3 sts, ch 1, [dc in next 4 sts, ch 1] 7 times, join to top of ch-3. (32 dc in 8 groups of 4, 8 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 4 (petals): Sl st in next 3 dc and into next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *2 dc in next dc, 2 tr in next dc, ch 2, 2 tr in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, sc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * 7 more times, omitting the final sc on the last repeat, join to first sc. Fasten off red.

Count: 8 petals, each with 4 dc, 4 tr, and a ch-2 tip, plus 8 valley sc. (72 sts and 8 ch-2 sps)

The ch-2 at the center of each petal forms the pointed tip. The sc in each ch-1 sp separates the petals.

Next, work the cream edging from the Border section.

Diamond (Make 48)

Rnd 1 (cream): MR, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, [3 dc in ring, ch 2] 3 times, join to top of ch-3. Pull the ring partly closed, leaving a small center hole. (12 dc, 4 ch-2 corners)

Rnd 2: Sl st in next 2 dc and into ch-2 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1; repeat from * 2 more times, join. (24 dc; 6 dc per side)

Rnd 3: Sl st in next 2 dc and into ch-2 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; repeat from * 2 more times, join. Fasten off cream. (36 dc; 9 dc and 2 ch-1 sps per side)

Checkpoint: 2.2 in (5.6 cm) per side. Next, work the red border from the Border section. The square hangs from one corner, so it reads as a diamond.

Bead (Make 192)

Rnd 1 (cream): MR, 6 sc in ring. (6 sc) Work in continuous rounds and mark the first st.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 6 times. (18 sc)

Rnd 4: Sc in each st around, changing to red on the final yarn over. (18 sc)

Rnd 5 (red): Sc in each st around. (18 sc)

Rnd 6: [sc in next st, sc2tog] 6 times. (12 sc) Stuff firmly.

Rnd 7: Sc2tog 6 times. (6 sc) Top up the stuffing, fasten off, and close the hole. Weave in ends.

The magic-ring end is on the cream half and becomes the top of the bead. For solid red beads, work all rounds in red.

Tab (Make 12)

Row 1 (cream): Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (6 sc)

Rows 2–28: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (6 sc)

Fasten off. The tab measures 1.2 in (3.0 cm) wide and 5 in (12.7 cm) long. Fold it in half and whipstitch the 6 sts of Row 1 to the 6 sts of Row 28. The folded loop hangs 2.5 in (6.4 cm) and fits a rod up to 1.5 in (3.8 cm) in diameter.

Tassel (Make 12)

Wrap red yarn 30 times around the 3.5 in (8.9 cm) card. Tie the top with a 10 in (25.4 cm) red strand, leaving both ends long. Cut the bottom loops. Wrap the neck six times, 0.5 in (1.3 cm) below the top, and knot. Trim to 3 in (7.6 cm).

Joining

Link each strand from the top down. Each link starts with a sl st in the bottom point of the piece above it. Its tail is then sewn into the top point of the next piece, so the pieces hang point to point.

Link points:
– Flower: the ch-2 sp of any petal tip is the top. The tip four petals away (directly opposite) is the bottom.
– Diamond: one corner ch-2 sp is the top, and the opposite corner is the bottom.
– Bead: the cream magic-ring center is the top, and the red closed center is the bottom.
– Tab: the center of the whipstitched seam.

Method:
1. Work a link from the center of the tab seam. Sew its tail through the top ch-2 sp of a flower, knot securely, and weave in.
2. Work a link from the flower’s bottom tip. Sew its tail through the top center of a bead, passing through 2 strands of the magic ring.
3. Work a link from the bottom center of the bead by joining with a sl st under 2 loops of Rnd 7. Sew it to the next bead.
4. Continue in sequence: bead, diamond, bead, bead, flower.
5. After repeat 4, sew the last link’s tail through the tassel’s tie.

That’s 1 link from the tab plus 6 links per repeat x 4 repeats, for 25 links per strand.

Tension: Keep each ch 5 relaxed but even. Tight links shorten the strand and pucker the points, and loose links let the motifs twist. Count your chains rather than judging by eye.

Size checkpoint: One repeat is 18.9 in (48.0 cm): two motifs at 4.25 in (10.8 cm), four beads at 1.1 in (2.8 cm), and six links at 1 in (2.5 cm). Four repeats come to 75.6 in (192.0 cm). Add the 2.5 in (6.4 cm) tab drop, the 1 in (2.5 cm) top link, and the 3 in (7.6 cm) tassel for a strand of about 82 in (208.3 cm). Hang the first finished strand and measure it before linking the rest.

Border

These edgings are worked on each flower and diamond. They use the main gauge: one sc round adds about 0.2 in (0.5 cm) to each edge.

Flower Edging

Rnd 5 (cream): Join cream with sl st in any valley sc. *Sc in next 4 sts, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 tip, sc in next 4 sts, sl st in next valley sc; repeat from * around, working the final sl st into the first sl st. Fasten off.

Per petal: 10 sc, 1 ch-2 tip, and 1 valley sl st. Total: 80 sc, 8 ch-2 sps, 8 sl sts.

Why the math works: Each petal has 8 sts plus a tip. You place 1 sc in each st and 2 sc in the tip, so the edging lies flat. The sl st in each valley keeps the curve between petals tight, and the ch 2 at each tip keeps the points sharp.

Diamond Border

Rnd 4 (red): Join red in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same sp. *[sc in next 3 dc, sc in next ch-1 sp] twice, sc in next 3 dc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next corner sp; repeat from * around, omitting the last corner, join to first sc.

Count: 9 dc + 2 sps = 11 sc along each side, plus 2 corner sc = 13 sc per side. Total: 4 x 13 = 52 sc and 4 ch-2 corners.

Rnd 5: Sl st into corner sp, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same sp. *Sc in each sc to next corner, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner sp; repeat from * around, omitting the last corner, join. Fasten off.

Count: 13 + 2 = 15 sc per side, including the 2 corner sc. Total: 4 x 15 = 60 sc.

Why the math works: At 5 sc per in, 15 sc gives exactly 3 in (7.6 cm) per side. Before the border, Rnd 3 measures 2.2 in (5.6 cm), which is 11 units at the same gauge. Each sc round adds a corner sc at each end of every side, so the corners stay square and the edges stay flat.

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends before blocking.
  2. Pin each flower and diamond to size on a blocking board: flowers 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tip to tip, diamonds 3 in (7.6 cm) per side.
  3. Pin each petal tip and diamond corner to a sharp point.
  4. Mist evenly with water until damp, not soaked.
  5. Let the pieces dry completely, then unpin.
  6. After linking, hang each strand for a day so gravity evens out the links.
  7. Steam the tabs lightly to flatten the whipstitched seams.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Every flower has 8 even petals with a cream point at each tip.
  • Every diamond has 15 sc per side and 4 sharp corners.
  • Every bead is firm, round, and split evenly between cream and red.
  • All links are ch 5, and every tail is knotted and woven in.
  • Each strand follows F-B-B-D-B-B four times.
  • Each strand measures about 82 in (208.3 cm).
  • Tassels are trimmed level to 3 in (7.6 cm).

Troubleshooting

  • Petals cup: Rnd 3 is too tight. Go up a hook size for the red rounds.
  • Petals ruffle: Check that Rnd 3 has exactly 4 dc between ch-1 sps.
  • Diamond corners round off: Make sure every corner has its ch 2.
  • Border waves: Recount for 13 sc per side in Rnd 4 and 15 sc per side in Rnd 5.
  • Beads look lumpy: Add more stuffing in small pieces before Rnd 7.
  • Strands twist: Make sure each link enters the exact center point of the next piece.
  • Strands are uneven: Recount the chains in every link.

Care

Hand wash in cool water, roll in a towel, and dry flat before rehanging. Don’t machine dry, which can tangle the strands and flatten the beads.

Final Notes

The measurement chain is simple. Gauge sets the motifs at 4.25 in (10.8 cm). Motifs, beads, and links make an 18.9 in (48.0 cm) repeat. Four repeats, plus a tab and a tassel, make an 82 in (208.3 cm) strand. Six strands make a 29.25 in (74.3 cm) panel. Check each step of the chain as you go, and the curtain will hang straight and even.

Happy crocheting!
