Frostlight Star Diamond Ornament Crochet Pattern

The Frostlight Star Diamond is a delicate thread ornament that looks like a frosted window pane. An eight-petal star blooms in the center. Fine chain lattice lines hold it inside a crisp diamond frame, and a small fan of stitches fills the top and bottom points.

It is worked in a single color of cream cotton thread, so the stitch texture does all the work. Against green branches and warm tree lights, the ivory reads as soft snow. White, silver-gray, or pale gold thread would look just as good.

This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished ornament measures 3 in (7.6 cm) wide and 5 in (12.7 cm) tall from point to point. The trefoil adds 0.5 in (1.3 cm) below, and the hanging loop rises about 1.25 in (3.2 cm) above.

The construction is all one piece, worked in the round from the center out. You make the star, add a round of chain loops, then work the fans and side corners. A chain frame round shapes the diamond, and a final single crochet border covers the frame, adds the hanging loop, and finishes the trefoil tip. You never cut the thread between rounds.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: 3 in (7.6 cm) wide x 5 in (12.7 cm) tall, not counting the loop and trefoil
  • Skill level: Intermediate (thread work, treble crochet, counting chain spaces)
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Size 3 cotton crochet thread (lace weight, category 0)
  • Hook: 2.25 mm (US B-1)
  • Number of pieces: 1 (single motif)
  • Layout: One vertical diamond, long points at top and bottom
  • Piece size before border (after Round 6): 2.75 in (7.0 cm) x 4.5 in (11.4 cm)
  • Border depth: 0.125 in (0.3 cm) along the sides; each top/bottom point grows 0.25 in (0.6 cm)

Materials

Thread: Choose a mercerized cotton thread in size 3. Mercerized cotton holds a sharp shape after blocking and takes stiffener well. Avoid fuzzy or acrylic threads, because the petals and lattice lose their definition.

  • Cream / ivory: 8 g, about 25 m (27 yd)

That amount includes a generous margin for a gauge test and the weaving-in tails. The ornament itself uses about 5 g (16 m).

Tools:
– 2.25 mm (US B-1) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle (small eye) or fine steel needle
– Scissors
– Rustproof pins and a foam blocking board
– Fabric stiffener or a starch solution
– Ruler or tape measure marked in inches and cm
– Optional: stitch marker for the start of each round

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sp(s) – space(s)
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • rep – repeat
  • * * – repeat the instructions between asterisks as directed

Special stitch – Petal: Worked over one group of 4 dc. Dc in the 1st dc, 2 tr in the 2nd dc, ch 2, 2 tr in the 3rd dc, dc in the 4th dc. That is 6 sts plus a ch-2 tip, giving a pointed petal.

Special stitch – Trefoil: *Ch 5, sl st in the last sc made* 3 times. This gives three ch-5 loops anchored in one stitch.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge in thread lace is measured on the motif, not a swatch. Work Rounds 1–3 as a test star first. Measure it flat, without stretching, from one petal tip straight across to the opposite tip.

  • After Round 1: ring diameter 0.75 in (1.9 cm)
  • After Round 3 (star gauge): 1.75 in (4.4 cm) tip to tip
  • After Round 4: 2.25 in (5.7 cm) across the chain loops
  • After Round 5: 2.75 in (7.0 cm) wide x 3.5 in (8.9 cm) tall
  • After Round 6: 2.75 in (7.0 cm) wide x 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall
  • After Round 7 and blocking: 3 in (7.6 cm) x 5 in (12.7 cm)

If your star is too big (over 1.9 in / 4.8 cm), go down to a 2.0 mm hook or tighten your trebles. If your star is too small (under 1.6 in / 4.1 cm), go up to a 2.5 mm hook. Size 3 thread is forgiving, but the chain lattice will look loose if your chains are much looser than your stitches. If the stitches match the gauge and the chains don’t, adjust your chain tension only.

Cream-colored crocheted lace features geometric star motifs with twisted edges against a soft, blurred golden background.

The Pattern

Round 1 – Center Ring

Make a magic ring.

Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 15 dc into the ring. Pull the ring closed. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3.

Count: 16 dc.

Round 2 – Petal Bases (growth round)

Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the same st, 2 dc in the next st, ch 1. *2 dc in each of the next 2 sts, ch 1* 7 times. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3.

Count: 32 dc (8 groups of 4 dc) and 8 ch-1 sps.

The ch-1 spaces separate the groups and become the valleys between petals.

Round 3 – Star Petals

Sl st in each of the next 3 dc and into the next ch-1 sp. Ch 1, sc in the same ch-1 sp.

*Petal over the next 4 dc, sc in the next ch-1 sp*. Rep from * around, ending with the 8th Petal. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Don’t work a final sc, because the first sc fills that valley.

Count: 56 sts (8 sc, 16 dc, 32 tr) and 8 ch-2 petal tips.

Each petal is 7 sts: 1 sc + 1 dc + 2 tr + 2 tr + 1 dc. That is 8 x 7 = 56. Take the star gauge here.

Round 4 – Lattice Loops

Sl st in the next dc, in each of the next 2 tr, and into the ch-2 tip. Ch 1, sc in the same tip.

*Ch 7, sc in the next ch-2 tip* 7 times, ch 7. Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Count: 8 sc and 8 ch-7 loops.

Turn the motif so that the joining sc is at the top. Name the tip sc like compass points: N (the join), then NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW going around in your working direction.

Round 5 – Fans and Side Corners

You start on the N sc.

Ch 3 (counts as dc), 6 dc in the same sc. (N fan: 7 dc)

Ch 4, sc in the next ch-7 loop, ch 4, sc in the NE sc, ch 4, sc in the next loop, ch 4. In the E sc work (dc, ch 3, dc). (E corner V)

Ch 4, sc in the next loop, ch 4, sc in the SE sc, ch 4, sc in the next loop, ch 4. Work 7 dc in the S sc. (S fan)

Ch 4, sc in the next loop, ch 4, sc in the SW sc, ch 4, sc in the next loop, ch 4. In the W sc work (dc, ch 3, dc). (W corner V)

Ch 4, sc in the next loop, ch 4, sc in the NW sc, ch 4, sc in the next loop, ch 4. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3.

Count: 30 sts (14 fan dc + 4 corner dc + 12 sc), 16 ch-4 sps, and 2 ch-3 corner sps.

Each quarter, for example N to E, has 4 ch-4 spaces. Number them sp1–sp4 in working order: sp1 starts at a fan or V, and sp4 ends at the next V or fan.

Round 6 – Diamond Frame

Sl st in each of the next 3 dc to reach the 4th (center) dc of the N fan.

Top point: Ch 1, (sc, ch 8, sc) in the same center dc.

Upper-right edge: Ch 3, sk 2 dc, sc in the 7th dc of the fan. Ch 7, sk sp1, sc in sp2, ch 5, sc in sp3, ch 7, sk sp4.

E corner: (Sc, ch 5, sc) in the ch-3 sp of the V.

Lower-right edge: Ch 7, sk sp1, sc in sp2, ch 5, sc in sp3, ch 7, sk sp4, sc in the 1st dc of the S fan, ch 3, sk 2 dc.

Bottom point: (Sc, ch 8, sc) in the center (4th) dc of the S fan.

Lower-left edge: Ch 3, sk 2 dc, sc in the 7th dc, ch 7, sk sp1, sc in sp2, ch 5, sc in sp3, ch 7, sk sp4.

W corner: (Sc, ch 5, sc) in the ch-3 sp of the V.

Upper-left edge: Ch 7, sk sp1, sc in sp2, ch 5, sc in sp3, ch 7, sk sp4, sc in the 1st dc of the N fan (the beginning ch-3), ch 3. Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Count: 20 sc; 2 ch-8 point loops, 2 ch-5 corner sps, 8 ch-7 sps, 4 ch-5 edge sps, and 4 ch-3 sps.

The longer ch-7 spans lift the frame clear of the star, which gives the straight diamond outline. The skipped ch-4 spaces become the open triangles of the lattice.

Checkpoint: 2.75 in (7.0 cm) wide x 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall, measured from the top of the ch-8 loop to the bottom of the ch-8 loop.

Border

Border Gauge

The border is one round of sc over the frame, worked 1 sc per chain and 1 sc per Round 6 sc. In size 3 thread at this gauge, that is about 11 sc per inch (2.5 cm). The border adds 0.125 in (0.3 cm) to each side and 0.25 in (0.6 cm) to each point.

Round 7 – Border, Hanging Loop, and Trefoil

Sl st into the top ch-8 loop.

Top point: Ch 1, 5 sc in the ch-8 loop. Ch 20, sl st in the last sc made (hanging loop). Work 5 more sc in the same ch-8 loop.

Upper-right edge (27 sc): Sc in the next sc, 3 sc in the ch-3 sp, sc in the next sc, 7 sc in the ch-7 sp, sc in the next sc, 5 sc in the ch-5 sp, sc in the next sc, 7 sc in the ch-7 sp, sc in the corner sc.

E corner: (3 sc, ch 2, 3 sc) in the ch-5 corner sp.

Lower-right edge (27 sc): Sc in the corner sc, 7 sc in the ch-7 sp, sc in the next sc, 5 sc in the ch-5 sp, sc in the next sc, 7 sc in the ch-7 sp, sc in the next sc, 3 sc in the ch-3 sp, sc in the next sc.

Bottom point: 5 sc in the ch-8 loop, Trefoil, 5 sc in the same loop.

Lower-left edge (27 sc): Work as the upper-right edge.

W corner: (3 sc, ch 2, 3 sc) in the ch-5 corner sp.

Upper-left edge (27 sc): Work as the lower-right edge. The last sc goes into the first sc of Round 6. Join with a sl st to the first sc of this round. Fasten off.

Count: 140 sc, plus 2 ch-2 corner tips, 1 ch-20 hanging loop, and 3 ch-5 trefoil loops.

Why the Math Works

Each frame edge in Round 6 has exactly 5 sc: the point-loop sc, 3 middle anchors, and the corner sc. It also has 22 chains (3 + 7 + 5 + 7). Working 1 sc in each gives 5 + 22 = 27 sc per edge. Across 4 edges that is 108 sc. It uses all 20 Round 6 sc (4 x 5) and all 88 edge chains (4 x 22) once each.

The corners and points add the rest. The two side corners add 6 sc each (12), and the two point loops add 10 sc each (20). The total is 108 + 12 + 20 = 140.

You can also count by side. Each side of the diamond has 27 edge sc, plus 3 sc from its half of the side corner and 5 sc from its half of the point. That is 35 sc per side, including its share of the corners, and 4 x 35 = 140. Nothing is counted twice.

The side corners have 6 sc over 5 chains. That small increase keeps the corner sharp and flat. The points have 10 sc over 8 chains, which lets them round smoothly into a fine tip without ruffling.

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in both tails along the backs of the border sc, splitting the thread. Trim close.
  2. Soak the ornament in fabric stiffener, or in a starch solution mixed per the label, for 1–2 minutes.
  3. Squeeze out the excess gently in a towel. Don’t wring it.
  4. On the blocking board, draw or mark a diamond 3 in (7.6 cm) wide and 5 in (12.7 cm) tall.
  5. Pin the top and bottom point loops first, then the two ch-2 side corners.
  6. Pin each of the 8 petal tips outward so the star sits centered and the lattice lines pull straight.
  7. Pin the three trefoil loops open into a clover shape, and pin the hanging loop straight up.
  8. Check that all four edges are straight. Re-pin any edge that bows inward.
  9. Let it dry completely, at least 12 hours, before unpinning.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Star has 8 even, pointed petals with open ch-2 tips
  • Round 4 has 8 ch-7 loops of equal length
  • Both fans have exactly 7 dc and sit centered on the vertical axis
  • Each frame edge has 27 border sc, and the full border has 140 sc
  • Side corners are sharp with a visible ch-2 tip
  • Trefoil has three equal ch-5 loops
  • Blocked size is 3 in (7.6 cm) x 5 in (12.7 cm)
  • Diamond is symmetrical when folded along both axes
  • All tails are woven in invisibly and the piece is fully dry and stiff

Troubleshooting

Petals look cupped or wavy: Your trebles are too tall for the chain tips. Pull up the loops less on each tr, or use a hook 0.25 mm smaller.

Star won’t lie flat after Round 4: The ch-7 loops are too tight. Loosen your chain tension, or work ch 8 instead and keep the same counts afterward.

Diamond edges curve inward: Your Round 6 chains are tight. Chain more loosely, and pin each edge straight while blocking.

Fan is off-center: Check that Round 5 started in the N sc and that you skipped exactly 2 dc on each side of the center dc in Round 6.

Border count is off: Count each edge separately. It should be 27 sc between the point sc and the corner sc. A missing sc is usually the one worked into a Round 6 anchor sc.

Trefoil loops are uneven: Keep every loop at ch 5 and pin them open while blocking.

Care

Dust gently with a soft brush. If the ornament gets soiled, hand-wash it in cool water, then re-stiffen and re-block it to 3 in (7.6 cm) x 5 in (12.7 cm).

Final Notes

The measurement chain is short and easy to check:

  • Star: 1.75 in (4.4 cm)
  • Lattice loops: 2.25 in (5.7 cm)
  • Fans and corners: 2.75 in x 3.5 in (7.0 cm x 8.9 cm)
  • Frame: 2.75 in x 4.5 in (7.0 cm x 11.4 cm)
  • Border and blocking: 3 in x 5 in (7.6 cm x 12.7 cm)

If the star matches gauge, everything after it follows. Make a few in cream for the tree, or try one in white or gold as a gift tag.

Happy crocheting!
