Garden Trellis Hanging Toilet Paper Holder Crochet Pattern

The Garden Trellis holder is a three-tier hanging organizer. It keeps three spare rolls tidy and on show. Each basket has a solid round base, an airy diamond-mesh wall, and a scalloped rim. A layered flower with two leaves sits on the front of each basket.

The colors are bright and garden-fresh. The baskets and straps are deep teal and the rims are magenta. Each flower has a magenta back layer, a cream front layer, and a magenta center, with leaf-green leaves behind it. Worked in cotton, the holder is firm enough to keep its shape and soft enough to look handmade.

This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished holder is about 23.5 in (59.7 cm) long from the top of the wooden ring to the bottom basket. Each basket is about 5 in (12.7 cm) across at the rim and 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall.

Construction is simple and modular. You crochet three identical baskets in joined rounds, from the base upward. Then you make three flowers and six leaves and sew them to the basket fronts. Last, you crochet two long straps, wrap them around a wooden ring, and whipstitch them to the sides of the baskets.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished length: 23.5 in (59.7 cm) including the ring; 20.75 in (52.7 cm) from the bottom of the ring to the bottom basket
  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4), 100% cotton
  • Hook: 4.0 mm (G-6)
  • Number of pieces: 3 baskets, 3 flowers, 6 leaves, 2 straps, 1 wooden ring
  • Layout: 1 column of 3 baskets, hung vertically
  • Basket size: 5 in (12.7 cm) wide at the rim, 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall
  • Basket size before rim: 4.75 in (12.1 cm) wide, 3.25 in (8.3 cm) tall
  • Rim depth: 1 in (2.5 cm)
  • Gap between baskets: 1.5 in (3.8 cm)

Materials

Use a smooth, mercerized or combed worsted-weight cotton. Cotton holds the basket shape, resists stretching under the weight of the rolls, and shows the mesh clearly. Avoid acrylic: the straps will slowly stretch.

The amounts below assume a cotton of about 170 m per 100 g.

  • Teal (main color): 130 g, about 221 m
  • Magenta (rims, flower back layers, flower centers): 45 g, about 77 m
  • Cream (flower front layers): 10 g, about 17 m
  • Green (leaves): 10 g, about 17 m

All quantities include a margin of roughly 15% for gauge swatching and weaving in ends.

Tools

  • 4.0 mm (G-6) crochet hook
  • Wooden ring, 2.75 in (7.0 cm) outer diameter
  • Tapestry needle
  • 4 locking stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Rust-proof pins and a 4.5 in (11.4 cm) diameter jar or a spare toilet roll for blocking

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • inc – 2 sc in the same stitch
  • BLO – back loop only
  • MR – magic ring
  • sk – skip
  • st(s) – stitch(es)

Special stitch – Scallop: sk 1 st, 5 dc in the next st, sk 1 st. Each scallop plus the sc that follows it uses exactly 4 sts of the previous round.

Mesh join: ch 2, dc in the first sc of the round. This counts as the last ch-5 loop and places your hook at the center of that loop, ready for the next round.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge: 16 sc and 18 rounds = 4 in (10.2 cm) in sc. In mesh, 6 mesh rounds = 2.75 in (7.0 cm) tall.

Make one complete basket before starting the others, and measure it at each checkpoint below.

  • After base Round 5 (30 sc): diameter 2.4 in (6.1 cm)
  • After base Round 10 (60 sc): diameter 4.75 in (12.1 cm)
  • After Round 18 (last mesh round): height from the turning ridge 3.25 in (8.3 cm)
  • After Round 21 (scallops): total height 4.25 in (10.8 cm), rim diameter 5 in (12.7 cm)

If the base is too big, go down to a 3.75 mm hook. If it is too small and a roll will not drop in, go up to a 4.5 mm hook. If the mesh is too tall but the base is correct, work 5 mesh rounds instead of 6. If the mesh is too short, add a seventh round. In both cases, change the strap’s basket sections to match your new basket height at 4.5 rows per inch.

Basket (Make 3)

Use teal. Work in joined rounds with the right side always facing you. Each round starts with ch 1, which does not count as a stitch, and ends with a sl st into the first st unless stated otherwise.

Base

  • Round 1: 6 sc in MR. (6 sc)
  • Round 2: inc in each st around. (12 sc)
  • Round 3: sc 1, inc, repeat 6 times. (18 sc)
  • Round 4: sc 2, inc, repeat 6 times. (24 sc)
  • Round 5: sc 3, inc, repeat 6 times. (30 sc)

Checkpoint: the base measures 2.4 in (6.1 cm) across.

  • Round 6: sc 4, inc, repeat 6 times. (36 sc)
  • Round 7: sc 5, inc, repeat 6 times. (42 sc)
  • Round 8: sc 6, inc, repeat 6 times. (48 sc)
  • Round 9: sc 7, inc, repeat 6 times. (54 sc)
  • Round 10: sc 8, inc, repeat 6 times. (60 sc)

Checkpoint: the base lies flat and measures 4.75 in (12.1 cm) across. If it ruffles, your increases are stacking too sharply. If it cups, your tension is too tight.

Solid wall band

  • Round 11: sc in the BLO of each st around. (60 sc) This makes the turning ridge where the wall starts.
  • Round 12: sc in each st around. (60 sc)

Put a marker in st 1 and another in st 31. These two markers show where the straps will go, on opposite sides of the basket. Halfway between them is the front, where the flower will sit.

Mesh wall

  • Round 13 (setup): ch 1, sc in the first st, ch 5, sk 2 sts, sc in the next st, ch 5, sk 2 sts, repeat 18 more times, then work the mesh join. (20 ch-5 loops: 60 sts ÷ 3 = 20)
  • Rounds 14–18: ch 1, sc in the same loop, ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 loop, repeat around, then work the mesh join. (20 ch-5 loops each round)

Each sc sits at the center of a loop from the round below, which makes the diamond trellis shape. Fasten off teal.

Checkpoint: the wall measures 3.25 in (8.3 cm) from the turning ridge to the top of the mesh.

Rim

Rim gauge: 16 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm), the same as the base. The rim is worked in magenta.

  • Round 19 (conversion): join magenta in any ch-5 loop near the strap-side marker. Ch 1, then work 3 sc in each ch-5 loop around. In every fifth loop (loops 5, 10, 15, and 20), work 4 sc instead of 3. Count: (3 sc × 20 loops) + 4 extra sc = 64 sc.
  • Round 20: sc in each st around. (64 sc)

Move your strap markers up to st 1 and st 33 of this round, in line with the markers below.

  • Round 21 (scallops): ch 1, sc in the first st, Scallop, sc in the next st, repeat 14 more times, Scallop, then sl st to the first sc. (16 scallops: 16 sc + 80 dc = 96 sts)

Counts by quarter: each quarter of the rim has 16 sts in Round 20 and 4 scallops in Round 21.

Why the math works: the scallop repeat uses 4 sts, and 64 ÷ 4 = 16, so the scallops close evenly with no partial repeat. The 4 extra sts in Round 19 widen the rim from 60 to 64 sts. That raises the rim circumference from 15 in (38.1 cm) to 16 in (40.6 cm), which gives the gentle outward flare in the photo. The extra sts are spaced evenly, so the flare stays round.

Fasten off and weave in the ends. Checkpoint: the basket is 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall and 5 in (12.7 cm) across at the rim.

Flower (Make 3)

  • Round 1 (magenta): 10 sc in MR, sl st to the first sc. (10 sc) Fasten off.
  • Round 2 (cream): join cream in any st. Work (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) in the next st, sl st in the next st, repeat 5 times. (5 cream petals) Fasten off.
  • Round 3 (magenta): join magenta from the back around the post of any cream sl st. Ch 4, sl st around the post of the next cream sl st from the back, repeat 5 times. (5 ch-4 loops behind the petals)
  • Round 4: in each ch-4 loop, work (sc, hdc, 2 dc, tr, 2 dc, hdc, sc). (5 magenta petals, 9 sts each = 45 sts)

Sl st to join and fasten off. Each magenta petal sits behind the gap between two cream petals, so the two layers alternate. The finished flower measures 2.5 in (6.4 cm) across.

Leaf (Make 6)

In green, ch 8.

  • First side: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work sl st, sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc. (7 sts)
  • Tip: ch 1.
  • Second side: working along the opposite side of the foundation chain, sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st. (7 sts)

Each leaf has 14 sts plus a ch-1 tip and measures 1.75 in (4.4 cm) long. Fasten off and leave a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail for sewing.

Strap (Make 2)

Use teal.

  • Row 1: ch 4, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the next 2 ch. (3 sc)
  • Rows 2–98: ch 1, turn, sc in each st. (3 sc)

The strap is 0.75 in (1.9 cm) wide and 21.75 in (55.2 cm) long. Mark these row sections:

  • Rows 1–27: top section (Rows 1–4 wrap around the ring)
  • Rows 28–46: basket 1 (19 rows)
  • Rows 47–53: gap (7 rows)
  • Rows 54–72: basket 2 (19 rows)
  • Rows 73–79: gap (7 rows)
  • Rows 80–98: basket 3 (19 rows)

Check: 27 + 19 + 7 + 19 + 7 + 19 = 98 rows. At 4.5 rows per inch, 19 rows equals 4.25 in (10.8 cm), the basket height. 7 rows equals 1.5 in (3.8 cm), the gap.

Make All Pieces

  • Teal: 3 baskets (Rounds 1–18), 2 straps
  • Magenta: 3 rims (Rounds 19–21), 3 flower centers, 3 flower back layers
  • Cream: 3 flower front layers
  • Green: 6 leaves

Joining

Appliqués first. Tuck one leaf behind each side of a flower so the leaves angle slightly upward. Tack them in place from the back. Center the flower on the front of a basket, halfway between the strap markers, over mesh Rounds 14–17. Sew around the edge of the magenta petals, catching the mesh sc behind them. Repeat on all three baskets.

Straps to ring. Wrap Rows 1–4 of one strap over the wooden ring. Whipstitch Row 1 flat against Rows 5–8. Repeat with the second strap right next to the first, so both straps hang from the same spot on the ring.

Straps to baskets. Lay the holder flat. Line up strap Row 28 with the top of the Round 21 scallop at the st 1 marker of basket 1. Line up strap Row 46 with the turning ridge (Round 11) of the same basket. Whipstitch both long edges of the strap to the basket wall, one stitch per strap row. Catch the rim sc, the mesh sc, and the solid band sc as you pass them. Repeat on the other side at the st 33 marker with the second strap. Then join baskets 2 and 3 in the same way, using strap Rows 54–72 and Rows 80–98.

Tension: sew firmly, but don’t pull the mesh closed. The diamonds next to the strap should stay the same size as the rest.

Checkpoint: from the bottom of the ring, the holder measures 20.75 in (52.7 cm). There is 5 in (12.7 cm) of free strap above basket 1 and 1.5 in (3.8 cm) between baskets.

Final Blocking

  1. Wet the whole holder in cool water and gently squeeze it out. Do not wring it.
  2. Roll it in a towel and press to remove the extra water.
  3. Slide each basket over a 4.5 in (11.4 cm) jar or a spare roll so the walls stand straight.
  4. Pin the scallops so they flare slightly outward and space them evenly.
  5. Press each flower flat with your fingers, and open up the petals and leaf tips.
  6. Lay the straps flat and straight, and let everything dry completely.
  7. Measure again: each basket should be 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall and 5 in (12.7 cm) across at the rim.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Every basket base has 60 sc and lies flat.
  • Every mesh round has 20 loops and the diamonds line up.
  • Every rim has 64 sc and 16 even scallops.
  • Each flower has 5 cream petals in front of 5 magenta petals.
  • Leaves point outward from both sides of each flower.
  • Both straps have 98 rows and hang evenly from the ring.
  • The baskets hang level, without tilting forward.
  • All ends are woven in securely.

Troubleshooting

  • Base ruffles: you have too many sts, or your tension is too loose. Count each round again or go down a hook size.
  • Basket leans or slants: the straps are not sewn at exactly opposite points. Re-sew them at st 1 and st 33.
  • Scallops don’t close evenly: Round 20 is not 64 sts. Fix the count before working the scallops.
  • Mesh spirals: the mesh join was skipped. Always finish with ch 2, dc into the first sc.
  • Straps stretch over time: use cotton, not acrylic, and crochet the straps tightly.
  • Flower petals curl: steam-block them flat before sewing.

Care

Hand wash in cool water and lay flat to dry, reshaping each basket over a jar. Do not tumble dry.

Final Notes

The measurements build on each other in this order. The 60 sc base is 4.75 in (12.1 cm) across. Twenty mesh loops rise 3.25 in (8.3 cm) high. The 64 sc rim widens to 5 in (12.7 cm), and 16 scallops bring the total height to 4.25 in (10.8 cm). Nineteen strap rows match each basket and 7 rows make each 1.5 in (3.8 cm) gap, for a 98-row strap. The finished holder is 23.5 in (59.7 cm) long including the ring. If each checkpoint matches, the finished holder will hang straight and level.

Happy crocheting!
