This hanging holder stores three rolls of toilet paper in a neat vertical stack. Three flared baskets sit on a long tapered backing panel. A cream strap at the top loops over a natural wooden ring, so the holder hangs from a door hook or wall hook.
The colors are cream and gold. Each basket has a solid cream base, a gold band around the bottom of the wall, an open diamond lattice of cream chain loops with small gold knots at the junctions, and a gold scalloped rim. The backing panel is cream half double crochet with a column of small eyelets along each edge. It is finished with a twisted gold rope border.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished holder measures about 24 in (61.0 cm) from the top of the ring to the bottom of the panel. Each basket is 4.75 in (12.1 cm) across the base, about 6 in (15.2 cm) across the rim, and 4 in (10.2 cm) tall.
Construction is simple. You work each basket in the round from the center of the base up, then make the panel in rows from the bottom edge to the strap. Sew the baskets to the panel, add the gold border, and fold the strap over the ring.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: about 6 in (15.2 cm) wide at the bottom of the panel × 24 in (61.0 cm) long including the ring
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4), cotton or cotton blend
- Hook: 4.0 mm (G-6)
- Number of pieces: 4 crocheted pieces (3 baskets, 1 backing panel) plus 1 wooden ring
- Layout: 1 column × 3 baskets, stacked vertically on the panel
- Piece size: each basket is 4.75 in (12.1 cm) across the base, about 6 in (15.2 cm) across the rim, and 4 in (10.2 cm) tall
- Panel size before border: 5.5 in (14.0 cm) wide at the bottom, tapering to 1.5 in (3.8 cm), 20 in (50.8 cm) long
- Border depth: 2 rows, about 0.25 in (0.6 cm)
Materials
Choose a firm, smooth worsted cotton. Cotton holds the basket shape and shows the lattice clearly. For the gold, a cotton blend with a metallic strand gives the closest look, but plain mustard-gold cotton works too. Keep both yarns the same weight.
- Cream (MC): 150 g, about 285 m
- Gold (CC): 75 g, about 143 m
- 4.0 mm (G-6) crochet hook
- 1 wooden ring, 2.75 in (7.0 cm) outer diameter
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Rust-proof pins and a blocking mat
The quantities include a margin of about 30% for swatching and weaving in.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- sc2tog: single crochet 2 together
- hdc2tog: half double crochet 2 together
- BLO: back loop only
- rev sc: reverse single crochet (crab stitch)
- st(s): stitch(es)
- rnd(s): round(s)
Special stitch, gold knot: Thread a 12 in (30.5 cm) length of gold on a tapestry needle. Bring it up just below a lattice junction sc and wrap the needle 3 times. Insert it back down just above the same sc, so the knot sits on top of the junction. Tie the ends together inside the basket.
Reverse sc: Work from left to right without turning. Insert the hook into the next st to the right, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through both loops.
Gauge and Checkpoints
- 16 sc × 18 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm)
- 16 hdc × 12 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm)
Make one basket before anything else. It works as both your gauge test and your size check.
Checkpoints:
- After Basket Rnd 10: base diameter 4.75 in (12.1 cm)
- After Basket Rnd 15: wall height 1.1 in (2.8 cm) above the base
- After Basket Rnd 19: total wall height about 3.1 in (7.9 cm)
- Finished basket: 4 in (10.2 cm) tall, rim about 6 in (15.2 cm) across
- Panel after Row 12: 5.5 in (14.0 cm) wide, 4 in (10.2 cm) tall
If your base is larger than 4.75 in (12.1 cm), go down one hook size. If it is smaller, go up one size. A standard roll is about 4.5 in (11.4 cm) wide, so the base must not be smaller than that.

Basket (Make 3)
Base
With cream, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, sl st to first sc. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st 6 times, sl st to first sc. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st 6 times, sl st to first sc. (24 sc)
Rnds 5–10: Keep increasing 6 sts per rnd, working 1 more sc between increases each rnd. Rnd 5: 30 sc. Rnd 6: 36 sc. Rnd 7: 42 sc. Rnd 8: 48 sc. Rnd 9: 54 sc. Rnd 10: 60 sc.
Checkpoint: the base lies flat and measures 4.75 in (12.1 cm) across. Fasten off cream.
Wall
Rnd 11: Join gold in any st. Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around, sl st to first sc. (60 sc) The unused front loops form a crisp ridge where the base turns up into the wall.
Rnds 12–13: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (60 sc) Fasten off gold.
Rnds 14–15: Join cream. Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (60 sc)
Checkpoint: the wall stands straight and measures 1.1 in (2.8 cm) high.
Lattice
Rnd 16: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 5, sk 3 sts, sc in next st 14 times, ch 5, sk 3 sts, sl st to first sc. (15 sc, 15 ch-5 loops)
Rnd 17: Sl st in next 3 ch to reach the center of the first loop. Ch 1, sc in same loop, ch 5, sc in next ch-5 loop 14 times, ch 5, sl st to first sc. (15 sc, 15 ch-5 loops)
Rnd 18: Sl st in next 3 ch. Ch 1, sc in same loop, ch 6, sc in next ch-5 loop 14 times, ch 6, sl st to first sc. (15 sc, 15 ch-6 loops)
Rnd 19: Sl st in next 3 ch. Ch 1, sc in same loop, ch 7, sc in next ch-6 loop 14 times, ch 7, sl st to first sc. (15 sc, 15 ch-7 loops)
Each sc lands in the center of the loop below, so the loops cross into diamonds. The longer chains in Rnds 18–19 make the lattice flare outward. Checkpoint: total wall height is about 3.1 in (7.9 cm).
Rim
Rnd 20 (conversion): Sl st in first ch-7 loop. Ch 1, work 5 sc in each ch-7 loop around, skipping the junction sc, sl st to first sc. (15 loops × 5 sc = 75 sc) Fasten off cream.
Rnd 21: Join gold. Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (75 sc)
Rnd 22 (scallops): Ch 1, sc in next 2 sts, sk 1 st, 5 dc in next st, sk 1 st 15 times, sl st to first sc. (15 scallops; 15 × 7 = 105 sts) Fasten off.
The 75 sts divide evenly into 15 repeats of 5, so one scallop sits above each lattice diamond.
Gold Knots
Add 1 gold knot over each junction sc in Rnds 17, 18, and 19. (3 rnds × 15 = 45 knots per basket) Leave the Rnd 16 junctions plain so the gold band below stays clean.
Checkpoint: the basket is 4 in (10.2 cm) tall and about 6 in (15.2 cm) across the rim. Weave in all ends.
Backing Panel (Make 1)
Work the panel in rows of hdc from the bottom up. The turning ch-1 does not count as a stitch.
Row 1: With cream, ch 23. Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (22 hdc)
Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn. (22 hdc)
Eyelet rows (Rows 3, 7, 11, 15, and every 4th row through Row 55): Ch 1, hdc in first st, ch 1, sk 1 st, hdc in each st across to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st, hdc in last st, turn. (The count stays the same because each ch-1 counts as 1 st.)
Decrease rows (Rows 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, and 60): Ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc in each st across to last 2 sts, hdc2tog, turn. (2 sts fewer than the previous row)
All other rows: Ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn.
Stitch counts by section:
- Rows 1–17: 22 sts
- Rows 18–23: 20 sts
- Rows 24–29: 18 sts
- Rows 30–35: 16 sts
- Rows 36–41: 14 sts
- Rows 42–47: 12 sts
- Rows 48–53: 10 sts
- Rows 54–59: 8 sts
- Row 60: 6 sts
Eyelets always fall on odd rows and decreases on even rows, so they never land on the same row. Eyelets stay 1 st in from the edge, so they follow the taper.
Checkpoint: after Row 60, the panel is 20 in (50.8 cm) long, 5.5 in (14.0 cm) wide at the bottom, and 1.5 in (3.8 cm) wide at the top.
Row 61: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog, turn. (4 sc)
Strap
Rows 62–79: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (4 sc) Fasten off, leaving a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail.
The strap is 1 in (2.5 cm) wide and 4 in (10.2 cm) long.
Make All Pieces
- Cream: 3 bases, 3 upper wall bands, 3 lattices, 3 rim bases, 1 panel with strap
- Gold: 3 lower wall bands, 3 rims, 135 knots (45 per basket), 1 panel border
Layout (front view, top to bottom):

Joining
Sew each basket to the front of the panel along two horizontal seams, using cream yarn and a whipstitch.
- Lower seam: basket Rnd 12 (gold band) to the panel row listed above
- Upper seam: basket Rnd 20 (cream sc under the rim) to the panel row listed above
The seams are about 3 in (7.6 cm) apart on both pieces: 9 hdc rows on the panel, and Rnds 12 to 20 on the basket. Because the spacing matches, the basket wall sits flat against the panel without bunching.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: The basket’s sc and the panel’s hdc both measure 4 sts per inch, so join 1 basket st to 1 panel st. On every seam, join 10 basket sts to the center 10 panel sts. Row 49 has exactly 10 sts, so the top seam of Basket 3 uses the full width. On wider rows, center the 10 sts.
Pin each basket in place first. Center the seams, with each basket’s round-join seam turned to the back. Whipstitch through the back loops of the basket sts and through both loops of the panel sts. Keep the tension firm but not tight. The panel should not pucker, and the basket should keep its round shape at the front.
Checkpoint: there is about 2 in (5.1 cm) of panel between the rim of one basket and the base of the next. Above Basket 3, about 3 in (7.6 cm) of plain panel shows.
Border
Border gauge: 4 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm). The hdc rows measure 3 rows per inch, so work 4 sc across every 3 row ends.
Work the border as 2 rows along the left side, the bottom, and the right side. Stop at the base of the strap; the strap stays cream.
Border Row 1: With the front facing, join gold at the left row end of Row 61. Ch 1, sc in the Row 61 row end. Then work down the left side at 4 sc per 3 rows across Rows 60 to 1. (left side: 1 + 80 = 81 sc)
Along the bottom, work into the foundation ch: 3 sc in the first ch, sc in the next 20 ch, 3 sc in the last ch. (bottom: 22 sts worked + 4 extra corner sts = 26 sc)
Work up the right side at 4 sc per 3 rows across Rows 1 to 60, then 1 sc in the Row 61 row end. (right side: 80 + 1 = 81 sc) Do not turn. (Total: 81 + 26 + 81 = 188 sc)
Border Row 2: Ch 1, rev sc in each st back along the whole edge. (188 rev sc) Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Why the math works: 60 hdc rows measure 20 in (50.8 cm), and 20 in × 4 sc per inch = 80 sc. The bottom has 22 sts at 4 per inch, which is 5.5 in (14.0 cm). The 3-sc corner groups turn each corner without cupping. The tapered sides are only about 0.15 in (0.4 cm) longer than straight sides would be, and the rev sc absorbs that difference. With the border, the panel is 6 in (15.2 cm) wide at the bottom.
Final Blocking
- Wet the holder in cool water, then roll it in a towel to press out the water. Do not wring it.
- Lay the panel flat and face up, with the baskets resting on top.
- Pin the panel to 6 in (15.2 cm) wide at the bottom and 20.5 in (52.1 cm) long, including the border.
- Put a toilet roll wrapped in plastic inside each basket so the walls dry straight and round.
- Open each scallop with your fingers and pin the rim to about 6 in (15.2 cm) across.
- Let it dry completely, which takes about 24 hours.
- Wrap the strap around the ring from front to back. Sew Row 79 to the back of Rows 56–58 with the cream tail.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Each basket base is 4.75 in (12.1 cm) across and lies flat
- Each basket has 15 diamonds and 15 scallops, lined up
- Each basket has 45 gold knots, all tied on the inside
- Panel stitch counts match the table, ending with 6 sts at Row 60
- Eyelets run evenly along both edges
- Border Row 1 has 188 sc
- Seams are centered, with 10 sts per seam
- The holder hangs straight at about 24 in (61.0 cm)
- All ends are woven in securely
Troubleshooting
Base ruffles: Your tension is loose. Go down a hook size, or check that you made exactly 6 increases per round.
Base cups: You missed increases. Recount each round.
Lattice leans or spirals: You skipped a loop or worked twice into one. Each lattice round needs exactly 15 sc.
Rim too wide: In Rnd 20, work 4 sc in each loop instead of 5 (15 loops × 4 sc = 60 sc). Then work Rnd 22 as 12 repeats of sc in next 2 sts, sk 1, 5 dc in next, sk 1.
Panel edges wavy: There are too many border sts. Go back to 4 sc per 3 rows.
Panel edges pulling in: There are too few border sts. Add 1 sc every 9 rows.
Basket sags forward: Pull the upper seam tighter, or add a third seam at Rnd 15.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, then dry flat with the baskets reshaped over rolls. Do not tumble dry, because metallic gold yarn can fray.

Final Notes
Each measurement builds on the one before it. 60 sts give a 4.75 in (12.1 cm) base, and 15 lattice loops give 75 rim sts and 15 scallops. 22 hdc give a 5.5 in (14.0 cm) panel, and 60 rows give 20 in (50.8 cm). The border, at 4 sc per 3 rows, adds up to 188 sts and a 6 in (15.2 cm) bottom edge. Check each number as you go, and the three baskets will line up and hang straight.
Happy crocheting!
