The Harbor Mist panel is a light, airy curtain in soft teal and warm cream stripes. Each stripe is made of fans of five double crochets that point down like little Vs, set over chain rows that leave neat triangular openings. Daylight shows through the gaps, while the stripes keep the fabric from looking busy.
The style is relaxed cottage-coastal. A narrow teal border frames the lace, and six solid teal tabs hold the panel on a standard curtain rod. The pattern uses US crochet terms throughout.
One finished panel measures 37.25 in (94.6 cm) wide by 79 in (200.7 cm) long, not counting the tabs. Make two panels for a pair like the one in the photo.
You crochet the panel flat in one piece. You start with a single crochet foundation row, repeat a 4-row fan-and-chain lace for the length, and close it with a single crochet row. Then you work a two-round border all the way around and add the tabs to the top edge. There is no seaming at all.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size (one panel): 37.25 in x 79 in (94.6 cm x 200.7 cm), excluding tabs
- Skill level: Easy-intermediate
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton or cotton blend
- Hook: US H-8 (5 mm)
- Number of pieces: 1 panel, with tabs worked onto it (make 2 for a pair)
- Layout: 24 pattern repeats wide, 31 pattern repeats long
- Size before border: 36.25 in x 78 in (92.1 cm x 198.1 cm)
- Border depth: 0.5 in (1.3 cm) on every side

Materials
Yarn: Use a smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton-linen blend with roughly 190 m per 100 g. Cotton hangs straight, holds the fan shapes well and survives washing. Avoid fuzzy yarns, because they fill in the openings.
Per panel:
– Color A, Teal: 550 g (1,045 m)
– Color B, Cream: 450 g (855 m)
For a pair of panels: Teal 1,100 g (2,090 m) and Cream 900 g (1,710 m).
These quantities include a margin of about 10% for gauge differences and your swatch.
Tools:
– US H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook
– Locking stitch markers
– Tapestry needle
– Measuring tape
– Rust-proof pins and a large blocking surface (foam mats, a carpet with a sheet, or a bed)
– Spray bottle
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
- sk: skip
- st(s): stitch(es)
- sp: space
- RS / WS: right side / wrong side
- rep: repeat
Special stitches:
– Fan: 5 dc in the same stitch.
– Half fan: 3 dc in the same stitch, counting the turning chain as the first dc.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: In the lace pattern, one 6-stitch repeat is 1.5 in (3.8 cm) wide, so the fabric has 4 sts per 1 in (2.5 cm). Four pattern rows (Rows 2–5) measure 2.5 in (6.4 cm) tall. Each single crochet row is about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) tall.
Make a test swatch first. Chain 32 and work Row 1 (31 sc). Work Rows 2–5 four times, then work the Closing Row. Block the swatch.
- Checkpoint 1: The blocked swatch measures 7.75 in x 10.5 in (19.7 cm x 26.7 cm).
- If your swatch is too big, go down a half size to 4.5 mm.
- If your swatch is too small, go up to 5.5 mm.
Width matters more than length. You can adjust length with repeats, but width is fixed by the foundation.
Checkpoints on the panel (measure with the work lying flat and relaxed):
– Checkpoint 2: After Row 1, the width is 36.25 in (92.1 cm).
– Checkpoint 3: After 8 repeats, the length is about 20.25 in (51.4 cm).
– Checkpoint 4: After 16 repeats, the length is about 40.25 in (102.2 cm).
– Checkpoint 5: After 31 repeats, the length is about 77.75 in (197.5 cm). After the Closing Row, it is 78 in (198.1 cm).

Panel Pattern
The stitch multiple is 6 + 1, with 1 extra chain for the foundation. All color changes happen at the same edge.
Changing colors: On the last yarn-over of the final stitch before a change, pull through with the new color. Don’t cut the yarn you just finished; carry it loosely up the side. The border will cover it.
Foundation
With Cream, ch 146.
Row 1 (Cream): Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Change to Teal on the last st. (145 sc)
Lace Pattern
Row 2 (Teal, fan row): Ch 1 and turn. Sc in the first sc. Sk 2 sts, fan in the next st, sk 2 sts, sc in the next st. Rep from * across.
(145 sts: 24 fans + 25 sc)
Row 3 (Teal, chain row): Ch 5 and turn; this counts as 1 dc plus a ch-2. Sc in the center dc of the next fan, ch 2, dc in the next sc. For every repeat except the last, ch 2 after that dc. Rep from * across, ending with a dc in the last sc. Change to Cream on that final dc.
(145 sts: 25 dc + 24 sc + 48 ch-2 sps, with each chain counted as 1 st)
Row 4 (Cream, offset fan row): Ch 3 and turn; this counts as a dc. Work 2 dc in the first dc to make a half fan. Sk the ch-2 sps throughout. Sc in the next sc, then fan in the next dc. Rep from * until 1 sc and the turning chain remain. Sc in the last sc, then work 3 dc in the 3rd ch of the turning chain to make a half fan.
(145 sts: 2 half fans of 3 dc + 23 fans + 24 sc)
Row 5 (Cream, chain row): Ch 1 and turn. Sc in the first dc. Ch 2, dc in the next sc, ch 2, sc in the center dc of the next fan. Rep from * across. Over the last half fan, put the final sc in the top of the turning chain. Change to Teal.
(145 sts: 25 sc + 24 dc + 48 ch-2 sps)
Rows 2–5 make one pattern repeat. The Teal fans in Row 2 sit on the sc row below, and the Cream fans in Row 4 sit in the dc of Row 3. This offset forms the V shapes and the triangular openings.
Rep Rows 2–5 30 more times, for 31 repeats in total. The panel now has 125 rows. After the final Row 5, don’t change to Teal; stay in Cream.
Closing Row
Closing Row (Cream, row 126): Ch 1 and turn. Sc in the first sc. 2 sc in the ch-2 sp, sc in the dc, 2 sc in the ch-2 sp, sc in the sc. Rep from * across.
(49 sc worked 1 per sc or dc + 96 sc worked 2 per ch-2 sp = 145 sc)
Fasten off the Cream yarn and cut the carried Teal yarn, leaving 6 in (15.2 cm) tails. Weave in the ends.
Checkpoint 5 again: The panel should measure 36.25 in x 78 in (92.1 cm x 198.1 cm).
Border
Border gauge: 4 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm) along every edge, matching the body gauge.
How the sides are counted: Each side count runs from one corner’s center st to the next corner’s center st and includes both of them. Adjacent sides share their corner center sts.
Round 1 (Teal): With the RS facing, join Teal in the last st of the Closing Row. Work 3 sc in that st for the corner. Sc in each of the next 143 sts, then 3 sc in the last st for the next corner.
Turn the corner and work down the long side, putting sc into the row ends of the pattern rows only. Over each 4-row repeat, work 10 sc: 2 in the end of Row 2, 3 in the end of Row 3, 3 in the end of Row 4 and 2 in the end of Row 5. That’s 31 x 10 = 310 sc.
Work 3 sc in the first st of Row 1 for the corner. Sc in the next 143 foundation sts, then 3 sc in the last st. Work the second long side the same way, with 310 sc. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Short sides: 1 + 1 + 143 + 1 + 1 = 147 sts
- Long sides: 1 + 1 + 310 + 1 + 1 = 314 sts
- Total: (2 x 147) + (2 x 314) − 4 shared corners = 918 sc
The two single crochet rows (Row 1 and the Closing Row) aren’t counted in the row-end stitches. Their ends are covered by the 3-sc corner groups.
Round 2 (Teal): Ch 1. Sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each corner center st. Join with a sl st.
- Total: 918 worked 1 per st + 8 extra corner sts = 926 sc
- Short sides: 149 sts
- Long sides: 316 sts
Don’t fasten off; continue straight into the tabs below.
Why the math works: The body is 145 sts wide. Each border round adds 1 st at each end of a side, so the short sides grow to 149 sts. At 4 sts per inch, that’s 37.25 in (94.6 cm). On the long sides, the 310 row-end sc equal 77.5 in (196.9 cm) of lace. Add the 2 single crochet rows (0.5 in, 1.3 cm) and the border at each end (0.5 in each), and you get 79 in (200.7 cm). That matches the 316 sts at 4 sts per inch.
Tabs
The top edge of Round 2 has 149 sts. The layout is: Tab (9) – gap (19) – Tab (9) – gap (19) – Tab (9) – gap (19) – Tab (9) – gap (19) – Tab (9) – gap (19) – Tab (9).
Check: 6 x 9 + 5 x 19 = 54 + 95 = 149.
Before you start, mark the first and last st of each tab with stitch markers.
Tab Row 1 (Teal): With the RS facing, join Teal in the first marked st (or sl st to it). Ch 1, then sc in the same st and the next 8 sts. (9 sc)
Tab Rows 2–24: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each st across. (9 sc)
Fasten off, leaving a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail. The tab should measure 2.25 in x 6 in (5.7 cm x 15.2 cm).
Fold each tab to the WS. With the tail, whipstitch its last row to the back of Border Round 1, directly behind the tab’s base. This makes a 3 in (7.6 cm) loop that fits rods up to 1.5 in (3.8 cm) across. Make all 6 tabs. The gaps between them measure 4.75 in (12.1 cm).
Final Blocking
- Weave in all the remaining ends along the WS, following the stitches of the same color.
- Soak the panel in cool water with a little wool wash for 15 minutes.
- Press the water out gently. Roll the panel in towels to remove more; don’t wring it.
- Lay it flat and pin it to 37.25 in x 79 in (94.6 cm x 200.7 cm). Pin the corners first, then the middle of each side, then every 4 in (10.2 cm).
- Open each fan with your fingers so the Vs point straight down and the triangular openings are even.
- Let it dry completely. If you’re short on space, block it in halves. You can also hang it from the rod while it’s damp, and its own weight will straighten it.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- The width is 37.25 in (94.6 cm) at the top, middle and bottom.
- The length is 79 in (200.7 cm) on both long sides.
- The rows have 145 sts each, and the sides have the correct border counts.
- All the color changes and carried strands are on one side and hidden under the border.
- The stripes alternate evenly: 2 Teal rows, then 2 Cream rows.
- The fans line up vertically every other stripe.
- The corners lie flat, with no cupping or ruffling.
- There are 6 evenly spaced tabs, each sewn securely to the back.
- All ends are woven in and invisible from the RS.
Troubleshooting
- The panel gets narrower as you go: You’re probably missing the last sc or the half fan at a row end. Count the 145 sts every few repeats.
- The fans tilt or drift: On fan rows, put the fans in dc and the sc in sc. Never work into a ch-2 sp on fan rows.
- The long edges wave: You worked too many row-end sc. Keep to 10 per repeat.
- The long edges pull in: You worked too few row-end sc, or your border tension is tight. Go up a hook size for the border only.
- The carried yarn puckers: Leave a little slack every time you carry the yarn up.
- The tabs stretch: Tighten your tension in the tabs, or work them with a 4.5 mm hook.
Care
Machine wash cool on a gentle cycle in a mesh bag, then reshape and dry flat or on the rod. Don’t tumble dry, because heat can shrink cotton unevenly.

Final Notes
The measurement chain is simple:
– A 6-stitch repeat is 1.5 in (3.8 cm), so 24 repeats plus 1 stitch make 145 stitches and 36.25 in (92.1 cm).
– 31 four-row repeats plus 2 single crochet rows make 78 in (198.1 cm).
– A 0.5 in (1.3 cm) border on every side brings the panel to 37.25 in x 79 in (94.6 cm x 200.7 cm).
– Six 9-stitch tabs with five 19-stitch gaps fill the 149-stitch top edge exactly.
Check your swatch and keep counting to 145, and the panel will hang straight. Then make a second one for a matched pair.
Happy crocheting!
