This curtain brings autumn into a doorway or window. Rows of small maple leaves in pumpkin, mustard, rust, and brick red hang on chocolate-brown beaded strands. At the top, a cream lace header finishes in pointed scallops, and each strand drops from one scallop point.
The style is cottage-rustic. Light comes through the open leaf centers, and the brown bobble beads add rhythm between the leaves. All instructions use US crochet terms.
The finished curtain is 36¼ in (92.1 cm) wide and 76½ in (194.3 cm) long. The header is 4½ in (11.4 cm) deep, and the strands hang 72 in (182.9 cm) below it.
Construction is straightforward. You crochet one header band in rows and add a looped top edge and a scalloped lower edge. Then you make 132 small leaves. Last, you chain 12 beaded strands, joining the leaves as you go and anchoring each strand to a scallop point.

- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4)
- Hook: 4.5 mm (US 7)
- Number of pieces: 145 (1 header, 12 strands, 132 leaves)
- Layout: 12 strands across, 11 leaves per strand
- Leaf size: 3 in (7.6 cm) wide, 4 in (10.2 cm) from center tip to stem end

Materials
Choose a smooth worsted-weight yarn with good stitch definition. A cotton or cotton-acrylic blend keeps the leaf points crisp and doesn’t stretch much when hanging. These amounts assume about 200 m per 100 g.
- Cream (header): 125 g / 250 m
- Chocolate Brown (strands): 100 g / 200 m
- Pumpkin (leaves): 135 g / 270 m
- Mustard (leaves): 135 g / 270 m
- Rust (leaves): 135 g / 270 m
- Brick Red (leaves): 135 g / 270 m
Tools:
– 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Stitch markers
– Scissors and measuring tape
– Blocking mats and rust-proof pins
– Spray bottle or steamer
– 13 clip curtain rings and a curtain rod
All quantities include a margin of about 15–20% for gauge differences and swatching.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- sp – space
- rep – repeat
Special stitches:
– V-st: (dc, ch 2, dc) in the same st.
– Picot: ch 3, sl st in the 3rd ch from the hook.
– Bead bobble (bb): ch 3, [yo, insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop, yo, draw through 2 loops] 4 times, yo, draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1 to lock. This makes a round bead that adds ½ in (1.3 cm) to the strand.
Gauge and Checkpoints
- Header: 16 sts and 8 dc rows = 4 in (10.2 cm)
- Strand: 4 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm); one bb = ½ in (1.3 cm)
Test one piece first. Make one complete leaf and a short test chain with two bb. Check them against these checkpoints:
- Leaf Round 1: 1 in (2.5 cm) across
- Leaf Round 2: 1¾ in (4.4 cm) across
- Leaf Round 3: 3 in (7.6 cm) wide, 4 in (10.2 cm) from center tip to stem end
- 16 ch = 4 in (10.2 cm)
If your leaf is too big, go down to a 4 mm hook. If it’s too small, go up to a 5 mm hook. The chain behind each leaf must match the leaf’s tip-to-stem length. If they disagree, adjust that chain count (see Joining).
For the header, Row 1 must measure 36¼ in (92.1 cm). A difference of ¼ in (0.6 cm) is fine.

Header Body
Use Cream throughout. Turn at the end of every row.
Row 1: Ch 146, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (145 sc)
Checkpoint: 36¼ in (92.1 cm) wide.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st across. (145 dc)
Row 3 (V-row): Ch 1, sc in first st, skip 2 sts, V-st in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * 24 times total. (25 sc and 24 V-sts)*
This row uses a 6-st repeat: 1 + (6 × 24) = 145.
Row 4 (mesh): Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), sc in ch-2 sp of next V-st, ch 2, dc in next sc. Ch 2, sc in ch-2 sp of next V-st, ch 2, dc in next sc; rep from * 23 more times. (25 dc, 24 sc, 48 ch-2 sps)*
Row 5 (conversion row): Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next sc, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc; rep from * 24 times total.
Count:* 49 sts worked 1-per-stitch (25 dc + 24 sc) + 96 sts worked in spaces (2 in each of 48 sps) = 145 dc.
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each st across. (145 sc) Do not fasten off.
Checkpoint: 36¼ in × 2½ in (92.1 cm × 6.4 cm).
Maple Leaf (make 132)
Each leaf has an open star center, a solid ring, and five pointed lobes around a short stem. Weave in both tails before joining.
Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), [dc, ch 1] 5 times in ring, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4. Pull the ring closed. (6 dc, 6 ch-1 sps)
Checkpoint: 1 in (2.5 cm).
Round 2 (conversion round): Ch 1, sc in same st as join, 3 sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next dc, 3 sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * 4 more times, sl st to first sc.
Count: 6 sc worked 1-per-dc + 18 sc in spaces = 24 sc.
Checkpoint:* 1¾ in (4.4 cm).
Round 3 divides the 24 sts into six 4-st sections. The Center Lobe sits directly opposite the stem.
- Stem section: sc in next st, sl st in next st, ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 3 ch (4-st stem made), sl st in next st, sc in next st.
- Small lobe: sc in next st, hdc in next st, (dc, picot, dc) in next st, hdc in next st.
- Big lobe: sc in next st, (hdc, dc) in next st, (tr, picot, tr) in next st, (dc, hdc) in next st.
Round 3: Ch 1. Starting in the same st as the join, work: Stem section, Small lobe, Big lobe, Big lobe (this is the Center Lobe), Big lobe, Small lobe. Sl st to first sc and fasten off.
Count: 4 (stem section) + 10 (2 small lobes × 5) + 21 (3 big lobes × 7) = 35 sts, plus 5 picots and a 4-st stem.
Checkpoint: 3 in (7.6 cm) wide, 4 in (10.2 cm) from the Center Lobe picot to the stem end.
The sc at the start of each lobe forms the notch between lobes, and the tr points form the maple tips.
Make All Pieces
Make 33 leaves in each of the four colors: Pumpkin (P), Mustard (M), Rust (R), and Brick Red (B). That’s 132 leaves in total. The 12 Brown strands are made during joining.
Layout grid: Strands run left to right (S1–S12), with Leaf 1 at the top.
S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 S6 S7 S8 S9 S10 S11 S12
Leaf 1 P M R B P M R B P M R B
Leaf 2 M R B P M R B P M R B P
Leaf 3 R B P M R B P M R B P M
Leaf 4 B P M R B P M R B P M R
Leaf 5 P M R B P M R B P M R B
Leaf 6 M R B P M R B P M R B P
Leaf 7 R B P M R B P M R B P M
Leaf 8 B P M R B P M R B P M R
Leaf 9 P M R B P M R B P M R B
Leaf 10 M R B P M R B P M R B P
Leaf 11 R B P M R B P M R B P M
Each row of the grid uses every color 3 times. Over 11 rows, that gives 33 leaves per color.
Joining
Before joining, finish the header border (see Border below). The strands hang from its 12 scallop points.
Method: Each strand is a chain worked join-as-you-go. It starts at a scallop point, catches each leaf at its Center Lobe picot, runs behind the leaf, and catches the leaf again at its stem end.
Leaf section: Hold the leaf right side facing you with the Center Lobe up. Insert the hook from back to front through the Center Lobe picot and sl st. Ch 16 behind the leaf, then sl st through the last sl st of the stem. This section is 4 in (10.2 cm) long.
Spacer: Ch 2, bb, ch 2, bb, ch 2. This section is 2½ in (6.4 cm) long.
Strand:
1. With right side of header facing, join Brown with sl st in the ch-3 sp of a scallop point.
2. Ch 4 (1 in / 2.5 cm lead).
3. Work a Leaf section with Leaf 1.
4. Spacer, then Leaf section with the next leaf; rep from * 9 more times. (11 leaves)*
5. End: Ch 2, bb, ch 2, bb. Fasten off and weave the tail into the last bead.
Length check: 1 + 4 + (10 × 6½) + 2 = 72 in (182.9 cm).
Stitch-to-stitch logic: Each leaf is held at exactly two points, the tip and the stem, so it stays flat and upright. The 16 ch behind it match its 4-in (10.2 cm) length. If your leaf measures differently, chain 4 per inch of its actual length.
Tension: Keep your chains even and slightly loose. Tight chains pucker the leaf and shorten the strand.
Size checkpoint: After each strand, hang the header and check that the strand drops 72 in (182.9 cm). Outer strands sit 33 in (83.8 cm) apart.
Border
The border goes on the header only. Work the top edge and lower edge as separate rows. The side edges stay unbordered.
Border gauge: Same as the header, 16 sts = 4 in (10.2 cm). Each long side starts with 145 sts.
Top edge, Row A: Continuing from Row 6, turn. Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 3, skip 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * 48 times total. Fasten off.
Count: 49 sc and 48 ch-3 loops. The math works because 1 + (3 × 48) = 145.
Depth:* ½ in (1.3 cm).
Lower edge, Row B1: With right side facing, join Cream in the first free loop of the foundation chain. Ch 1, sc in same loop, ch 5, skip 5 loops, sc in next loop; rep from * 24 times total.
Count:* 25 sc and 24 ch-5 loops. The math works because 1 + (6 × 24) = 145.
Lower edge, Row B2 (scallops): Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc. (Hdc, 2 dc, tr) in next ch-5 loop, (tr, ch 3, tr) in next sc, (tr, 2 dc, hdc) in next ch-5 loop, sc in next sc; rep from * 12 times total. Fasten off.
Count: 1 + (12 × 11) = 133 sts, plus 12 ch-3 points.
Depth:* 1½ in (3.8 cm) for Rows B1 and B2 together.
Why the math works: Each scallop uses 2 ch-5 loops, which cover 12 base sts. At 16 sts = 4 in, that’s 3 in (7.6 cm) per scallop, and 12 scallops × 12 sts + 1 = 145. The points are centered on base sts 7, 19, 31, and so on up to 139. That puts the outer points 1½ in (3.8 cm) in from each side and the 12 points 3 in (7.6 cm) apart, which is exactly one strand per point.
Hanging: Clip rings to the Row A sc directly above the scallop valleys: sc 1, 13, 25, and so on up to 145. That’s every 4th sc, 13 rings in total, spaced 3 in (7.6 cm) apart.
Final Blocking
- Lightly mist the leaves, or steam them without touching the yarn.
- Pin each leaf to 3 in (7.6 cm) wide, with a pin at every picot. Let them dry fully.
- Pin the header to 36¼ in × 4½ in (92.1 cm × 11.4 cm). Pin every scallop point and open the mesh row evenly.
- Mist the header and let it dry.
- Hang the curtain, steam the strands from a distance, and let gravity straighten them overnight.
- Re-measure: 76½ in (194.3 cm) from top edge to strand ends.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Header is 36¼ in (92.1 cm) wide, with 145 sts in each long edge.
- Top edge has 48 ch-3 loops. Lower edge has 12 scallop points.
- Every leaf has 35 sts plus 5 picots and is 3 in (7.6 cm) wide.
- There are 33 leaves in each color, placed according to the grid.
- Each strand has 11 leaves and is 72 in (182.9 cm) long.
- All tails are woven in, and 13 clip rings are evenly spaced.
Troubleshooting
- Leaves cup: Round 3 is too tight. Go up a hook size for Round 3 only, then block firmly.
- Leaf points look rounded: Pull each picot snug and pin it during blocking.
- Leaf bulges away from the strand: The chain behind it is too long. Remove 1–2 ch.
- Leaf buckles: The chain behind it is too short. Add 1–2 ch.
- Strands are different lengths: Recount the spacers, and mark each finished leaf section.
- Header ruffles at the scallops: Make sure you skip 5 loops in Row B1, not 4.
- Beads look flat: Work all 4 dc of the cluster into the same ch.
Care
Hand wash in cool water, roll the curtain in a towel, and dry it flat or hanging. Store it loosely rolled so the strands don’t tangle.

Final Notes
The measurements build on one another. Each leaf is 3 in wide and 4 in from tip to stem, and 16 chains match that 4 in. Each 6½-in leaf-and-spacer unit repeats along a 72-in strand. Twelve 3-in scallops build a 36¼-in header, with one strand on every point. If every checkpoint matches, the curtain finishes at 36¼ in × 76½ in (92.1 cm × 194.3 cm).
Happy crocheting!
