These Jolly Santa Socks put a cheerful Santa face on the front of each leg. Each one has a rounded red dome hat with a cream pom-pom, a bobble brim, closed happy eyes, a round red nose, peach cheeks, and a fluffy popcorn-stitch beard.
The base of each sock is cream single crochet with red embroidered X marks across the top of the foot. The cuff is red ribbing in two sections: an ankle rib and a top rib near the lower calf. A red toe finishes the look. The colors are red, cream, peach, and a touch of black.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. Each sock fits a foot circumference of 8.5–9 in (21.6–22.9 cm) and has a foot length of 9.5 in (24.1 cm). The leg measures 7.3 in (18.5 cm) from the heel line to the top edge.
Each sock is worked toe-up in a spiral of single crochet, with an afterthought heel. The Santa features are crocheted separately and sewn to the front of the leg. The ribbed cuff is worked last. You make two identical socks.

Materials
Choose a smooth DK sock yarn or a wool-nylon blend. Nylon helps with durability on the sole, and a smooth yarn shows the popcorn texture clearly. The quantities below are for the pair and assume about 230 m per 100 g.
- Cream: 100 g / 230 m
- Red: 40 g / 92 m
- Peach: 5 g / 12 m
- Black: 3 g / 7 m
Tools:
- 4.0 mm hook
- 4.5 mm hook (optional, for the cuff)
- Yarn needle
- 4 stitch markers
- Scissors
- A small amount of fiberfill or yarn scraps
- Pins
- Measuring tape
All quantities include a margin of roughly 20% for swatching and sewing tails.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 together
- inc – 2 sc in the same stitch
- dc – double crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- MR – magic ring
- FPdc – front post double crochet
- BPdc – back post double crochet

- rnd – round
- RS / WS – right side / wrong side
Special stitches:
- Bobble (bb): [Yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops] 4 times in the same st. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on the hook. Work bobbles on WS rows so they pop to the RS.
- Popcorn (pc): Work 4 dc in the same st. Remove the hook from the loop. Insert the hook front to back in the first dc, pick up the dropped loop, and pull it through. Work popcorns on RS rows so they pop toward you.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge:
- 20 sc and 24 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm) in spiral sc with a 4.0 mm hook
- Ribbing: 5 post-stitch rnds ≈ 2 in (5.1 cm)
Make one complete sock first and check its fit before starting the second.
Checkpoints:
- After toe Rnd 8: the toe measures 4 in (10.2 cm) wide laid flat.
- After Rnd 12: the toe is 2 in (5.1 cm) long.
- After Rnd 47: the sock is 8 in (20.3 cm) from the toe tip.
- After the heel: total foot length is 9.5 in (24.1 cm).
- After Rnd 78: the leg is 5 in (12.7 cm) above the heel line.
If your sock is too big: go down to a 3.75 mm hook.
If your sock is too small: go up to a 4.5 mm hook.
To change foot length: add or remove rounds in Rnds 13–47. Six rounds equal 1 in (2.5 cm).

Sock (Make 2)
Work in a continuous spiral and move the beginning-of-round marker up each round. The first 20 sts of every round are the instep/front, and the last 20 sts are the sole/back.
Toe (Red)
- Rnd 1: Ch 7. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the next 5 ch (6 sc). Rotate and sc in the free loops of the same 6 ch (6 sc). (12)
- Rnd 2: [Inc, sc 4, inc] twice. (16)
- Rnd 3: [Inc, sc 6, inc] twice. (20)
- Rnd 4: [Inc, sc 8, inc] twice. (24)
- Rnd 5: [Inc, sc 10, inc] twice. (28)
- Rnd 6: [Inc, sc 12, inc] twice. (32)
- Rnd 7: [Inc, sc 14, inc] twice. (36)
- Rnd 8: [Inc, sc 16, inc] twice. (40)
- Rnds 9–12: Sc in each st around. (40)
Each side now has 20 sts. Place a marker at the start of the instep side.
Foot (Cream)
- Rnds 13–47: Change to cream. Sc in each st around. (40)
That is 35 rounds, or about 5.8 in (14.7 cm). At the end of Rnd 47, the sock is 8 in (20.3 cm) from the toe tip.
- Rnd 48 (heel placeholder): Sc 20 across the instep. Ch 20 and skip the 20 sole sts. (20 sc + 20 ch)
Leg (Cream)
- Rnd 49: Sc 20 across the instep. Sc 20 in the top loops of the ch. (40)
- Rnds 50–78: Sc in each st around. (40)
Remove the hook and place the live loop on a locking marker. Do not fasten off. You will work the cuff from this loop later.
Afterthought Heel (Cream)
- Heel Rnd 1: Join cream at the right corner of the opening. Sc in each of the 20 skipped sole sts, sc 1 in the corner gap, sc 20 in the bottom loops of the ch, and sc 1 in the other corner gap. (42)
- Heel Rnd 2: Sc around, working sc2tog over each corner st and its next st. (40)
Place markers so that each side has 20 sts.
- Heel Rnd 3: [Sc2tog, sc 16, sc2tog] twice. (36)
- Heel Rnd 4: [Sc2tog, sc 14, sc2tog] twice. (32)
- Heel Rnd 5: [Sc2tog, sc 12, sc2tog] twice. (28)
- Heel Rnd 6: [Sc2tog, sc 10, sc2tog] twice. (24)
- Heel Rnd 7: [Sc2tog, sc 8, sc2tog] twice. (20)
- Heel Rnd 8: [Sc2tog, sc 6, sc2tog] twice. (16)
- Heel Rnd 9: [Sc2tog, sc 4, sc2tog] twice. (12)
Flatten the heel and whipstitch the 6 sts on one side to the 6 sts on the other. The 9 heel rounds add 1.5 in (3.8 cm), which brings the total foot length to 9.5 in (24.1 cm).
Santa Appliqués (Make 1 Set per Sock)
Rounded Dome Hat (Red)
The hat is a half circle worked in rows from a magic ring. The evenly spaced increases curve the top into a smooth dome.

- Row 4: Sc, [pc, sc] 5 times. (11: 5 pc)
- Row 5: Sc2tog, sc 7, sc2tog. (9)
- Row 6: Sc, [pc, sc] 4 times. (9: 4 pc)
- Row 7: Sc2tog, sc 5, sc2tog. (7)
- Row 8: Sc, [pc, sc] 3 times. (7: 3 pc)
That makes 18 popcorns in total. The beard measures 2.75 in (7.0 cm) wide across the top and 2 in (5.1 cm) tall.

RND 1-12: RED TOE
Joining
Embroidery:
- X marks: Use red yarn. Work each X across 2 sts and 2 rnds, which is 0.4 in (1.0 cm) square. Go diagonally corner to corner, then cross back the other way. Place them as shown in the grid.
- Eyes: Use black yarn. Backstitch two upward-curving arcs, each about 0.4 in (1.0 cm) wide and 1 in (2.5 cm) apart, centered over front sts 10–11 on Rnds 64–65.
Attaching the appliqués: Slip a piece of cardboard inside the leg so you only sew through one layer.
- Beard: Pin the beard with its top edge on Rnd 62 and its bottom point on Rnd 50, centered between front sts 10 and 11. Whipstitch around the beard edge, catching 1 sock st for every edge st or row end.
- Nose and cheeks: Stuff the nose lightly with yarn scraps. Sew it overlapping the top center of the beard. Sew one cheek on each side, about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) out from the nose.
- Hat: Pin the brim’s bottom edge on Rnd 66 and sew the hat around its full outline. The dome top should land on Rnd 77, which leaves 1 cream round below the cuff.
- Pom-pom: Sew the pom-pom at the right edge of the dome.
Tension: Keep your stitches snug but not puckered. The sock must still stretch to 9 in (22.9 cm) around the leg.
Checkpoint: Lay the sock flat. The Santa face should measure about 4.45 in (11.3 cm) tall and sit centered within the 4 in (10.2 cm) front.
Border: Ribbed Cuff
Border gauge: 5 post-stitch rnds ≈ 2 in (5.1 cm). If the cuff feels tight over your heel, use a 4.5 mm hook.
Put the live loop from Rnd 78 back on the hook and change to red.
- Rnd 79: Sc in each st around. (40: 20 front + 20 back)
This is a trim round, worked 1 sc per existing st with nothing added.
Section A – Ankle Rib:
- Rnds 80–81: Ch 2. [FPdc, BPdc] around. Sl st to the first st to join. (40: 10 pairs front + 10 pairs back)
Divider:
- Rnd 82: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Sl st to join. (40)
Section B – Top Rib:
- Rnds 83–85: Ch 2. [FPdc, BPdc] around, keeping the FPdc stacked over the FPdc columns. Sl st to join. (40)
Fasten off.
Why the math works: The cuff stays at 40 sts, the same count as the leg, so there is no flare or pull-in. Since 40 ÷ 2 = 20, the [FPdc, BPdc] repeat closes evenly with 10 repeats on each side.
Cuff depth: 2 sc rnds (0.33 in) + 5 rib rnds (2 in) = 2.3 in (5.8 cm). Added to the 5 in (12.7 cm) leg, that gives the 7.3 in (18.5 cm) total leg height.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends on the inside of the sock.
- Mist the sock bodies lightly with water. Avoid soaking the appliqués.
- Insert a sock blocker or a piece of cardboard cut to the measurements: 4 in (10.2 cm) wide and 9.5 in (24.1 cm) long.
- Pat the hat dome smooth. Fluff each popcorn with your fingertip.
- Do not stretch or pin the ribbing.
- Let the socks dry flat completely.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- [ ] Each sock measures 40 sts around and is 4 in (10.2 cm) wide laid flat.
- [ ] The foot is 9.5 in (24.1 cm) long and matches the other sock within 0.25 in (0.6 cm).
- [ ] The heel corners have no holes.
- [ ] The hat is a smooth rounded dome, not a peak.
- [ ] The beard has 18 popcorns, all facing out.
- [ ] Each sock has 5 X marks, aligned the same way on both socks.
- [ ] The cuff ribs line up vertically, with the sc divider visible between the two rib sections.
- [ ] The sock pulls over the heel comfortably.
Troubleshooting
- Hat ruffles: You likely worked extra increases. Recount each row; Row 8 should have 24 sts.
- Hat cups too much: Your tension tightened on the later rows. Rework Rows 6–8 more loosely.
- Popcorns sink to the back: They were worked on WS rows. Popcorns belong on Rows 2, 4, 6, and 8 only.
- Holes at heel corners: Close them with a few stitches from the tail before weaving it in.
- Cuff is too tight: Rework the cuff with a 4.5 mm hook.
- Santa sits off-center: Re-pin the beard using front sts 10 and 11 as the center line.
Care
Hand wash cold and lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry, as heat can flatten the popcorns and felt the wool.

Final Notes
The measurement chain runs like this:
- Gauge: 5 sc per inch, which gives 40 sts = 8 in (20.3 cm) around.
- Foot: the toe and foot reach 8 in (20.3 cm), and the heel adds 1.5 in (3.8 cm) for a 9.5 in (24.1 cm) foot.
- Leg: 5 in (12.7 cm) of leg holds the 4.45 in (11.3 cm) Santa face.
- Cuff: the 2.3 in (5.8 cm) ribbed cuff completes the 7.3 in (18.5 cm) leg.
If every checkpoint matches, both socks will be identical. Happy crocheting!
