Lattice Commute Car Seat Organizer Crochet Pattern

This car seat organizer has a grid of open squares in warm tan cotton, framed in crisp black. It hangs from your headrest posts and keeps a phone, pens, a slim wallet and sunglasses within reach of the back seat.

The look is simple and graphic. A filet-mesh back panel gives the lattice effect. Three pockets have solid single-crochet bottoms so small items can’t slip through, and open mesh at the top to match the panel. Black edging outlines every piece so the shapes stand out against the seat.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished organizer measures 16 x 11 in (40.6 x 27.9 cm), including the border.

Construction is straightforward. You crochet the mesh panel flat, make three separate pockets and give each one a black edging, then sew the pockets on. Next you work a two-round black border around the panel. Last, you sew on two black straps that loop over the headrest posts.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished size: 16 x 11 in (40.6 x 27.9 cm)
  • Skill level: Easy-intermediate
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton
  • Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
  • Number of pieces: 6 (1 back panel, 3 pockets, 2 straps)
  • Layout: 3 pockets in one row across the lower panel
  • Panel size before border: 15 x 10 in (38.1 x 25.4 cm)
  • Border depth: about 0.5 in (1.3 cm), 2 rounds
  • Side pockets (with edging): 4.75 x 5.6 in (12.1 x 14.2 cm)
  • Center pocket (with edging): 5.25 x 5.6 in (13.3 x 14.2 cm)
  • Straps: 1.5 x 12 in (3.8 x 30.5 cm) each

Materials

Yarn: Use a smooth, firm worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend. Cotton holds the mesh squares open, doesn’t stretch much under weight, and stands up to sun and handling in a car. Avoid very soft or fuzzy yarns, because they blur the lattice.

  • Color A (tan): 160 g, about 290 m, for the panel and pockets
  • Color B (black): 70 g, about 125 m, for the border, pocket edgings, straps and sewing

These amounts include a margin of about 15% for gauge swatching and differences in tension.

Tools:
– 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Rust-proof pins or locking stitch markers
– Measuring tape or ruler
– Blocking mat and spray bottle
– Scissors

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sk – skip
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • sp – space
  • tch – turning chain
  • [ ] / * * – repeat the instructions inside as directed

Special stitch: Mesh (filet open square). One mesh is one dc post plus one ch-1 space. On mesh rows, each ch-1 sp sits over a ch-1 sp or a skipped stitch, and each dc sits on a dc or a stitch.

Corner (panel border): (sc, ch 2, sc) worked into one stitch or space. One sc of each corner belongs to each of the two sides it joins.

Gauge and Checkpoints

  • Single crochet: 16 sts x 18 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm)
  • Mesh: 8 meshes x 8 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm), so each square is 0.5 in (1.3 cm)

Test one piece first. Make one side pocket before anything else, because it contains both stitch types. Measure it at each checkpoint:

  • After Row 14 (solid section): 4.25 in (10.8 cm) wide, about 3.1 in (7.9 cm) tall
  • After Row 18 (mesh section): about 5.1 in (13.0 cm) tall
  • After edging: 4.75 x 5.6 in (12.1 x 14.2 cm)

If your pocket is too big, go down 0.5 mm in hook size. If it’s too small, go up 0.5 mm. If only the mesh rows are too tall, keep your dc loops shorter or try a hook 0.5 mm smaller just for the mesh rows. Correct gauge now, so the pockets fit side by side on the panel later.

Back Panel

With Color A:

Row 1: Ch 64. Dc in the 6th ch from hook (the 5 skipped ch count as a dc, a ch-1 and a skipped ch). *Ch 1, sk next ch, dc in next ch*; repeat from * to * 29 times. Turn. (31 dc posts + 30 ch-1 sps = 61 sts; 30 meshes)

Rows 2–20: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc in next dc, [ch 1, dc in next dc] 28 times, ch 1, dc in top of tch. Turn. (31 dc posts + 30 ch-1 sps = 61 sts; 30 meshes)

Fasten off after Row 20.

Checkpoint: The panel should be 30 meshes wide and 20 meshes tall, which is 15 x 10 in (38.1 x 25.4 cm). Pin it flat and measure before you continue. The squares should look square, not tall rectangles.

Pockets

Make 2 side pockets and 1 center pocket. Each one starts with solid sc rows for the bottom and finishes with mesh rows at the top, so the mesh lines up with the panel’s lattice.

Side Pocket (make 2)

With Color A:

Row 1: Ch 18. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (17 sc)

Rows 2–14: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (17 sc)

Checkpoint: 4.25 x 3.1 in (10.8 x 7.9 cm).

Row 15 (setup mesh row): Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), sk next sc, dc in next sc, *ch 1, sk next sc, dc in next sc*; repeat from * to * 7 times. Turn. (9 dc posts + 8 ch-1 sps = 17 sts; 8 meshes)

Rows 16–18: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc in next dc, [ch 1, dc in next dc] 6 times, ch 1, dc in 3rd ch of tch. Turn. (9 dc posts + 8 ch-1 sps = 17 sts)

Fasten off Color A.

Center Pocket (make 1)

With Color A:

Row 1: Ch 20. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (19 sc)

Rows 2–14: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (19 sc)

Row 15: Ch 4, sk next sc, dc in next sc, *ch 1, sk next sc, dc in next sc*; repeat from * to * 8 times. Turn. (10 dc posts + 9 ch-1 sps = 19 sts; 9 meshes)

Rows 16–18: Ch 4, dc in next dc, [ch 1, dc in next dc] 7 times, ch 1, dc in 3rd ch of tch. Turn. (10 dc posts + 9 ch-1 sps = 19 sts)

Fasten off Color A.

Checkpoint: 4.75 x 5.1 in (12.1 x 13.0 cm).

Pocket Edging (all 3 pockets)

Join Color B in the first stitch of Row 18 (the top corner). Work one round. Each corner is (sc, ch 1, sc) in the corner stitch.

Edging round: Ch 1, (sc, ch 1, sc) in first st. Sc in each st across the top to the last st, then (sc, ch 1, sc) in the last st. Down the side, work 2 sc in each of the 4 mesh row-ends and 1 sc in each of the 14 sc row-ends (22 sc). Work (sc, ch 1, sc) in the first foundation ch. Sc in each foundation ch across to the last ch, then (sc, ch 1, sc) in the last ch. Up the second side, work 1 sc in each of the 14 sc row-ends and 2 sc in each of the 4 mesh row-ends (22 sc). Sl st to the first sc. Fasten off, leaving a 30 in (76.2 cm) tail for sewing.

Counts per side (each side includes its 2 corner sc):
– Side pocket: top 17, bottom 17, each side 22 + 2 = 24. Total: 17 + 17 + 24 + 24 = 82 sc
– Center pocket: top 19, bottom 19, each side 24. Total: 19 + 19 + 24 + 24 = 86 sc

Checkpoint: Side pockets 4.75 x 5.6 in (12.1 x 14.2 cm). Center pocket 5.25 x 5.6 in (13.3 x 14.2 cm).

Straps (make 2)

With Color B:

Row 1: Ch 7. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (6 sc)

Rows 2–54: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (6 sc)

Fasten off, leaving a 24 in (61.0 cm) tail.

Checkpoint: 1.5 x 12 in (3.8 x 30.5 cm).

Make All Pieces

Before assembling, check that you have all six pieces:

  • 1 back panel – Color A mesh, 15 x 10 in (38.1 x 25.4 cm), no border yet
  • 2 side pockets – Color A with Color B edging, 4.75 x 5.6 in (12.1 x 14.2 cm)
  • 1 center pocket – Color A with Color B edging, 5.25 x 5.6 in (13.3 x 14.2 cm)
  • 2 straps – Color B, 1.5 x 12 in (3.8 x 30.5 cm)

Layout (front view, panel before border):

+------------------------------------------------+
| open mesh (upper rows) |
| |
+--------------+ +-----------------+ +-----------+
| SIDE POCKET | | CENTER POCKET | |SIDE POCKET|
| 4.75 in | | 5.25 in | | 4.75 in |
| mesh / solid | | mesh / solid | |mesh/solid |
+--------------+-+-----------------+-+-----------+
gaps between pockets: 0.125 in each

Width check: 4.75 + 0.125 + 5.25 + 0.125 + 4.75 = 15.0 in (38.1 cm), which is exactly the panel width.

Joining

Method: Whipstitch with Color B and a tapestry needle. Sew the sides and bottom of each pocket to the panel, and leave the top open.

Placement:
1. Lay the panel right side up with Row 1 at the bottom.
2. Pin the left side pocket so its bottom edging sits on the panel’s bottom edge and its left edging sits on the panel’s left edge.
3. Leave a 0.125 in (0.3 cm) gap, then pin the center pocket. Leave another 0.125 in (0.3 cm) gap and pin the right side pocket, flush with the panel’s right edge.
4. The pocket tops should line up with each other, about level with the top of panel Row 11.

Stitch-to-stitch logic: Go through the outer loop of each pocket’s edging sc, then catch one dc post or ch-1 strand of the panel behind it. Along the pocket bottoms, sew 1 edging sc to each panel foundation stitch: 17 + 19 + 17 = 53 sc on 53 of the panel’s 61 bottom stitches. The few remaining stitches fall under the two small gaps and the edges. Along the pocket sides, sew 1 edging sc per 0.25 in (0.6 cm) of panel height. That works out to about 2 sc per mesh row.

Tension: Pull each stitch snug enough that the pocket lies flat, but don’t pucker the mesh. If the panel ripples between stitches, loosen them.

Size checkpoint: The panel should still measure 15 x 10 in (38.1 x 25.4 cm) once the pockets are on. The pockets add no width.

Border

Border gauge: 4 sc per 1 in (2.5 cm), worked into the mesh edge. Each mesh is 0.5 in (1.3 cm) and gets 2 sts (one dc, one ch-1 sp), so that’s 4 sts per inch. Each mesh row-end gets 2 sc, which is also 4 sc per inch.

Join Color B in the last dc of Row 20 (top right corner, right side facing).

Round 1:
– Top: Ch 1, corner in same st, sc in each of the next 59 sts (each dc and each ch-1 sp), corner in the last st.
– Side: 1 sc in the Row 20 row-end, 2 sc in each of the next 18 row-ends (Rows 19–2), 1 sc in the Row 1 row-end.
– Bottom: Corner in the first foundation st. Sc in each of the next 59 foundation sts, going behind the pocket bottoms so you work only into the panel. Corner in the last foundation st.
– Side: 1 sc in the Row 1 row-end, 2 sc in each of the next 18 row-ends, 1 sc in the Row 20 row-end. Sl st to the first sc.

Round 1 counts (each side includes its 2 corner sc):
– Top: 1 + 59 + 1 = 61
– Each side: 1 + 1 + 36 + 1 + 1 = 40
– Bottom: 61
– Total: 61 + 40 + 61 + 40 = 202 sc (plus 4 ch-2 corner sps)

Round 2 (trim round): Ch 1, sc in each sc around, (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner ch-2 sp. Sl st to the first sc.

Round 2 counts:
– Top and bottom: 61 + 2 = 63 each
– Each side: 40 + 2 = 42
– Total: 202 worked 1-per-stitch + 8 corner sc = 210 sc

Fasten off.

Why the math works: The top has 61 stitches, so 61 sc is a 1-to-1 match. Spread over 15 in (38.1 cm), that’s about 4 sc per inch, which matches the border gauge. Each side is 10 in (25.4 cm) tall and gets 40 sc, exactly 4 per inch. Because the stitch density matches the fabric, the border stays flat. Round 2 adds stitches only at the corners, so the corners turn cleanly without cupping. Two rounds of sc add about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) on each side, so the finished size is 16 x 11 in (40.6 x 27.9 cm).

Attach the Straps

  1. Mark points 3.5 in (8.9 cm) in from each top corner of the bordered panel. The strap centers will be 9 in (22.9 cm) apart, which suits most headrest posts.
  2. Fold each strap in half into a loop.
  3. Lay both strap ends against the back of the panel, centered on a mark, so the ends overlap the top 1.5 in (3.8 cm) of the panel.
  4. Whipstitch around each strap end through the border and the mesh posts. Sew twice for strength, because these seams carry all the weight.

If you’d rather not remove the headrest, sew only one end of each strap and add a sturdy snap to the other end.

Final Blocking

  1. Wet the whole organizer and press out the water. Don’t wring it.
  2. Pin it on a blocking mat to 16 x 11 in (40.6 x 27.9 cm).
  3. Square the corners with a ruler and pin the border straight along all four sides.
  4. Ease the mesh squares open with your fingers so the grid runs in straight lines.
  5. Pin the pocket tops level, and make sure the two gaps are each 0.125 in (0.3 cm).
  6. Pin the straps out straight.
  7. Let it dry completely, usually 24 hours.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Panel is 16 x 11 in (40.6 x 27.9 cm) after blocking
  • The panel has 30 x 20 meshes and every square is open
  • All three pocket tops are at the same height
  • Pocket sides and bottoms are sewn firmly, with no gaps big enough for a pen to slip through
  • Pocket tops are open and not caught in the sewing
  • Border lies flat with crisp corners
  • Straps are 9 in (22.9 cm) apart and double-stitched
  • All tails are woven in on the back

Troubleshooting

  • Mesh squares look like tall rectangles: Your dc rows are too tall. Use a hook 0.5 mm smaller for the mesh rows, or wrap the yarn more snugly.
  • Pockets are too wide for the panel: Your sc gauge is loose. Remake the pockets with a smaller hook, or reduce the gaps to zero.
  • Border ruffles: You have too many sc on the sides. Check that you have 40 on each side in Round 1.
  • Border pulls in: Your sc tension is too tight. Use a hook 0.5 mm larger just for the border.
  • Panel sags under weight: Reinforce the strap seams, and keep heavy items out of the center pocket.
  • Pockets gape at the top: Work one extra round of sl st along the pocket tops only, in Color B.

Care

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, press out the water, and dry flat. Reshape while damp so the squares stay open.

Final Notes

Everything depends on gauge. Each mesh is 0.5 in (1.3 cm), so the 30 x 20 mesh panel is 15 x 10 in (38.1 x 25.4 cm). The pockets are 4.75 in (12.1 cm), 5.25 in (13.3 cm) and 4.75 in (12.1 cm) wide, and with two 0.125 in (0.3 cm) gaps they fill exactly 15 in (38.1 cm). The two-round border adds 0.5 in (1.3 cm) on each side, so the finished organizer is 16 x 11 in (40.6 x 27.9 cm). Check your measurements at each stage and the finished piece will hang straight.

Happy crocheting!
