The Willow Lattice Hanging Wall Organizer is a three-tier hanging organizer with a calm, natural look. It has three oval baskets, each covered in a raised diamond lattice, hung on wooden dowels with a chunky cord that ends in a simple triangle loop. Use it in an entryway, a bathroom or a craft corner.
The sample uses one color, a soft taupe greige, so the texture does the visual work. The raised lines catch the light and the recessed background stays quiet. The bare wood dowels give it a warm, minimal finish.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished organizer measures about 14 in (35.6 cm) wide and 28 in (71.1 cm) tall from the top of the hanging loop to the bottom of the lowest basket. Each basket is 11 in (27.9 cm) long, 3.5 in (8.9 cm) deep and 5.75 in (14.6 cm) tall.
Construction is simple. Each basket starts with an oval base worked in rounds of single crochet. The walls rise straight up, then the lattice is worked with front post double crochet stitches that move one stitch per round. A three-round rim with two dowel eyelets finishes each basket. A single crochet I-cord links everything and wraps the dowel ends.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 14 in x 28 in (35.6 cm x 71.1 cm)
- Skill level: Intermediate (post stitches, crossed stitches, I-cord)
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Bulky (#5), cotton or cotton blend
- Hook: 6.0 mm (US J-10)
- Number of pieces: 4 crocheted pieces (3 baskets, 1 cord) plus 4 wooden dowels
- Layout: 1 column of 3 baskets below 1 bare top dowel
- Piece size: each basket 11 in x 3.5 in x 5.75 in (27.9 cm x 8.9 cm x 14.6 cm)
- Size before border: basket wall 4.75 in (12.1 cm) tall before the rim
- Border depth: rim 1 in (2.5 cm), 3 rounds
Materials
Choose a firm bulky cotton or cotton blend with good stitch definition. Soft acrylic will sag under weight. A smooth, tightly plied yarn shows the lattice best.
- Taupe (main and only color): 300 g / 390 m total
- Each basket uses about 75 g / 98 m (3 baskets = 225 g / 293 m)
- Cord uses about 20 g / 26 m
These quantities include a margin of about 20% for gauge swatches and differences between yarns.
Tools:
- 6.0 mm (US J-10) crochet hook
- 4 wooden dowels, 5/8 in (1.6 cm) diameter, each cut to 14 in (35.6 cm)
- Stitch markers (at least 4)
- Yarn needle
- Measuring tape and ruler
- Scissors
- Wall hook rated for at least 10 lb (4.5 kg)
- Optional: fine sandpaper and wood wax for the dowels
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- sp – space
- BLO – back loop only
- FPdc – front post double crochet: yo, insert hook from front to back to front around the post of the stated stitch, yo, pull up a loop, [yo, draw through 2 loops] twice
- Rnd(s) – round(s)
Special stitches:
- Raised st: any FPdc from the previous round.
- Every lattice instruction fills one stitch position. When you work an FPdc, skip the top of the stitch at that position in the current round. This keeps the count at 78.
- FPa (FPdc ahead): FPdc around the raised st of the previous round that sits one position ahead (to the left for right-handed crocheters).
- FPb (FPdc behind): FPdc around the raised st of the previous round that sits one position behind.
- Cr (cross, 2 positions): FPdc around the second raised st of the pair below, then FPdc around the first raised st of the pair, crossing in front of the stitch you just made.
Gauge and Checkpoints
- Single crochet: 12 sts and 12 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm)
- Double crochet: 12 sts and 7 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm)
Make one complete basket first, before buying dowels or starting the cord. Measure at each checkpoint:
- After Rnd 5 (base): 11 in x 3.25 in (27.9 cm x 8.3 cm)
- After Rnd 7: wall stands up 0.75 in (1.9 cm)
- After Rnd 14 (lattice): wall 4.75 in (12.1 cm) tall from the base edge
- After Rnd 17 (rim): total height 5.75 in (14.6 cm), rim circumference 26 in (66.0 cm)
If the base comes out more than 0.5 in (1.3 cm) too long, go down to a 5.5 mm hook. If it is too short, go up to a 6.5 mm hook. If the length is right but the walls are too tall, your post stitches are loose. Keep the yarn-overs snug, and don’t add or skip rounds, because that breaks the diamond pattern.

Basket (Make 3)
Join every round with a sl st to the first stitch. Don’t turn. The ch 1 or ch 2 at the start of a round does not count as a stitch.
Base
Rnd 1: Ch 27. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 24 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Rotate and work along the opposite side of the foundation: sc in next 24 ch, 2 sc in the last ch (the same ch as the first sc). Join. (54 sts)
Each long side has 24 sts and each end has 3 sts.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 24, 2 sc in each of next 3, sc in next 24, 2 sc in each of last 2. Join. (60 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next, sc in next 24, [sc in next, 2 sc in next] 3 times, sc in next 24, [sc in next, 2 sc in next] 2 times. Join. (66 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in first 2, 2 sc in next, sc in next 24, [sc in next 2, 2 sc in next] 3 times, sc in next 24, [sc in next 2, 2 sc in next] 2 times. Join. (72 sts)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in first 3, 2 sc in next, sc in next 24, [sc in next 3, 2 sc in next] 3 times, sc in next 24, [sc in next 3, 2 sc in next] 2 times. Join. (78 sts)
The base now has 24 sts on each long side and 15 sts on each end. Checkpoint 1.
Lower Wall
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around. Join. (78 sts)
The unused front loops make the crisp turned edge.
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (78 sts)
Checkpoint 2. Place a marker in the center stitch of each end (the 8th of its 15 sts) so you can find it again at the rim.
Lattice
The lattice has 13 repeats of 6 positions (13 x 6 = 78). Each repeat holds two raised lines. They meet, cross and separate to form the diamonds.
Rnd 8 (base points): Ch 2, dc in next 2, FPdc around each of next 2 sts, dc in next 2; repeat from * around. Join. (78 sts: 52 dc, 26 FPdc)*
Rnd 9 (cross): Ch 2, dc in next 2, Cr over next 2, dc in next 2; repeat from * around. Join. (78 sts)*
Rnd 10: Ch 2, dc in next st, FPa, dc in next 2, FPb, dc in next st; repeat from * around. Join. (78 sts)*
Rnd 11: Ch 2, FPa, dc in next 4, FPb; repeat from * around. Join. (78 sts)*
The lines now sit at the edges of each repeat, so they are next to the lines of the neighboring repeats.
Rnd 12 (cross at repeat edges): Ch 2, FPb (around the last raised st of Rnd 11, just to the right of the join), dc in next 4, Cr over next 2; repeat from * 11 more times, dc in next 4, FPa (around the first raised st of Rnd 11). Join. (78 sts: 1 + 72 + 4 + 1)*
The first and last stitches of this round complete the 13th cross across the join.
Rnd 13: Ch 2, dc in next st, FPb, dc in next 2, FPa, dc in next st; repeat from * around. Join. (78 sts)*
Rnd 14 (top points): Ch 2, dc in next 2, FPb, FPa, dc in next 2; repeat from * around. Join. (78 sts)*
The lines meet in a V at the top of each diamond. Checkpoint 3.
Make All Pieces
- Baskets: 3, all in Taupe, each 78 sts at the rim
- Cord: 1, in Taupe, 84 in (213.4 cm) long
- Dowels: 4, each 14 in (35.6 cm)
Cord: Ch 3. Pull up a loop in the 2nd and 3rd ch from hook (3 loops on hook). *Slide the 2 left loops off the hook and pinch them. Yo and draw through the loop on the hook. Insert hook in the next freed loop, yo, draw through. Repeat in the last freed loop (3 loops on hook). Repeat from * until the cord measures 84 in (213.4 cm) when slightly stretched. Yo, draw through all 3 loops and fasten off.
Layout grid (front view):
/\ hanging loop, 2 in
/ \ triangle legs, 8 in each
o==================o top dowel (bare)
| | 3 in
o====[ BASKET 1 ]==o
| | 7 in
o====[ BASKET 2 ]==o
| | 7 in
o====[ BASKET 3 ]==o
Each “o” is one cord wrap.
Joining
The pieces are joined with dowels and cord wraps instead of seams. Every wrap point matches one on the opposite side, so the baskets hang level.
- Dowel through basket: Push a dowel in through one end eyelet, across the inside of the basket and out through the other eyelet. Center it so 1.5 in (3.8 cm) sticks out on each side (11 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 14 in). Repeat for all three baskets.
- Hanging loop: Fold the cord in half. Make a 2 in (5.1 cm) loop at the fold and sew the two legs together just below it with 4 stitches.
- Top dowel: Measure 8 in (20.3 cm) down each leg. Wrap each leg once around the top dowel, 1 in (2.5 cm) from its tip. Sew the wrap to the cord with 3 stitches.
- Basket dowels: From the top wrap, measure 3 in (7.6 cm) to Basket 1’s dowel and wrap it 1 in (2.5 cm) from the tip. Then go 7 in (17.8 cm) to Basket 2 and 7 in (17.8 cm) to Basket 3. Wrap and tack each one the same way.
- Tails: Sew the remaining 1 in (2.5 cm) tails to the back of the cord.
Tension: Measure each section before tacking. Keep the cord taut but not stretched, and work the matching wraps on the left and right sides one after the other.
Size checkpoint: Hang the organizer empty. Dowel centers should be 7 in (17.8 cm) apart, the overall height about 28 in (71.1 cm), and every dowel level.
Border (Basket Rim)
Border gauge: 12 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm).
Each basket gets its own rim, so the counts here are for one basket. Per side, the rim has 24 sts on the front, 24 on the back and 15 on each end.
Rnd 15: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (78 sts: front 24, back 24, ends 15 + 15)
Before Rnd 16, check that the Rnd 7 markers still sit at the center of each end. If the joins have drifted, fold the basket flat to find each center again. Each eyelet covers the center stitch and the one next to it toward the back.
Rnd 16 (eyelets): Ch 1, sc in first 36 sts, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, sc in next 36 sts, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts. Join. (74 sc + 2 ch-2 sps)
Per side: front 24, back 24, and each end 13 sc + 1 ch-2 sp (7 sc, eyelet, 6 sc).
Rnd 17: Ch 1, sc in each sc and 2 sc in each ch-2 sp. Join. (74 sc worked 1 per stitch + 4 sc in spaces = 78)
Fasten off and weave in the ends. Checkpoint 4.
Why the math works: 78 sts at 3 sts per inch gives 26 in (66.0 cm), the same as the Rnd 5 base. No stitches are added in the walls, so the sides go straight up. Each ch-2 eyelet replaces the 2 stitches it skips, and the 2 sc per space in Rnd 17 bring the count back to 78. The 13 lattice repeats divide evenly into 78, so there are no partial diamonds at the join.
Final Blocking
- Lightly spray each basket with cool water until it is damp, not soaked.
- Pack it firmly with a folded towel or a small box about 11 in x 3.5 in x 5.75 in (27.9 cm x 8.9 cm x 14.6 cm).
- Square the long sides and round the ends evenly.
- Pinch the raised lattice lines into straight diagonals with your fingers.
- Smooth the rim level all the way around.
- Let dry completely, at least 24 hours.
- Hang the cord from a hook with light weight on it, steam it lightly and let it cool.
- Assemble only after every piece is dry.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Each basket has 78 sts in the base, walls and rim
- All 13 crosses in Rnds 9 and 12 cross in front
- Each diamond closes in a neat V at Rnd 14
- Eyelets are centered on the ends and line up across the basket
- Dowels stick out 1.5 in (3.8 cm) on each side
- Cord sections measure 8, 3, 7 and 7 in (20.3, 7.6, 17.8 and 17.8 cm)
- All wraps are tacked and all ends woven in
- The organizer hangs level with dowels 7 in (17.8 cm) apart
Troubleshooting
- Basket flares outward: Your post stitches are too loose. Go down a hook size for Rnds 8–14 only.
- Walls lean inward: Rnd 6 was worked too tight. Redo it with a relaxed tension.
- Lattice lines slant the wrong way: You mixed up FPa and FPb. Check each raised st against the one below it.
- Count drops to 76 or 77: You probably worked into the stitch top behind an FPdc. Remember to skip it.
- Diamonds don’t close at the join in Rnd 12: Check that you worked the FPb at the start and the FPa at the end.
- Basket tilts on its dowel: The eyelets are off-center. Move them in Rnd 16 so they mirror each other.
- Cord stretches over time: Shorten the sections by 0.25 in (0.6 cm) and tack them again.
Care
Hand wash in cool water, press out the water in a towel and reshape the baskets to dry flat. Take the dowels out before washing.

Final Notes
The measurement chain starts with a base of 78 sts that measures 26 in (66.0 cm) around and 11 in x 3.25 in (27.9 cm x 8.3 cm). The 78-stitch walls rise straight to 4.75 in (12.1 cm), and the 1 in (2.5 cm) rim brings each basket to 5.75 in (14.6 cm). The 14 in (35.6 cm) dowels give 1.5 in (3.8 cm) of wrap room on each side, and the 84 in (213.4 cm) cord sets the tiers 7 in (17.8 cm) apart. Hit each checkpoint and everything will fit at assembly.
Happy crocheting!
