Mauve Ladder Hanging Basket Organizer Crochet Pattern

This three-tier wall organizer is made of three identical half-oval crochet baskets, each hanging from its own wooden dowel. Slim crochet cords link the dowels, and a hanger cord at the top makes a triangle up to a wall hook. It’s a calm, practical piece for washi tape, folded fabric, yarn, hooks, and scissors.

The whole organizer uses one soft dusty mauve, set against natural wood dowels. Each basket has a solid base, a short solid band at the bottom of the wall, a band of vertical “ladder” openings, a solid top band, and a rope-like reverse single crochet rim. The back top edge folds over the dowel to make a casing, so the basket lies flat against the wall while the front curves out.

The pattern uses US crochet terms. Each basket is about 10¼ in (26.0 cm) wide, 4¼ in (10.8 cm) deep, and 5¼ in (13.3 cm) tall. Once hung, the organizer measures about 35 in (88.9 cm) from the hanger peak to the bottom of the lowest basket.

Construction is simple. You crochet an oval base in rounds, then work the walls in joined rounds without turning. Next you add a short casing flap across the back stitches and a reverse single crochet rim across the front. Last, you make five cords, slide the dowels through the casings, and wrap and sew the cords around the dowel ends.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished organizer: about 14 in (35.6 cm) wide at the dowels × 35 in (88.9 cm) tall, including the hanger
  • Skill level: Easy+ (working in rounds, simple increases, reverse single crochet)
  • Terminology: US crochet terms
  • Yarn weight: Bulky (#5) cotton or cotton blend
  • Hook: 6.0 mm (US J-10)
  • Number of pieces: 3 identical baskets, 3 dowels, 4 connecting cords, 1 hanger cord
  • Layout: 1 column × 3 tiers, with dowels 9 in (22.9 cm) apart
  • Piece size (one basket): 10¼ in (26.0 cm) wide × 4¼ in (10.8 cm) deep × 5¼ in (13.3 cm) tall
  • Wall height before border: 5 in (12.7 cm)
  • Border (rim) depth: ¼ in (0.6 cm)

Materials

Yarn: Choose a firm bulky cotton or cotton-blend cord yarn of about 100 g / 120 m (131 yd). Cotton holds the basket shape and won’t stretch much under weight. Soft acrylic tends to sag.

  • Dusty mauve: 320 g / 384 m (420 yd) total
  • About 85 g / 102 m (112 yd) per basket
  • About 25 g / 30 m (33 yd) for all five cords together

The total includes a margin of roughly 10–15%, so a slightly loose gauge won’t leave you short.

Tools and notions:

  • 6.0 mm (US J-10) crochet hook
  • 3 wooden dowels, each 14 in (35.6 cm) long and ⅝ in (1.6 cm) in diameter
  • 4 locking stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • 1 wall hook rated for at least 6.6 lb (3 kg)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • BLO – back loop only
  • rev sc – reverse single crochet (crab stitch)
  • rep – repeat
  • rnd(s) – round(s)

Special stitch – reverse single crochet (rev sc): Work from left to right (right to left if you’re left-handed). Insert the hook into the next st to the right, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through both loops. This makes the twisted, rope-like rim.

Ladder repeat: dc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st = 3 sts per repeat. When you stack the ch-1 spaces round after round, they form the vertical rectangular openings.

Gauge and Checkpoints

  • Single crochet: 12 sc × 13 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm)
  • Double crochet ladder: 12 sts (dc and ch-1 combined) × 6.5 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm)

Make one complete basket before buying all your yarn. A finished basket is the most honest gauge swatch: you’ll see right away whether the base lies flat and the walls stand up.

Checkpoints for one basket:

  1. After Rnd 7 (base): 10¼ in (26.0 cm) × 4¼ in (10.8 cm), flat with no ruffles
  2. After Rnd 10: wall about 1 in (2.5 cm) high
  3. After Rnd 15: wall 4 in (10.2 cm) high
  4. After Rnd 18: wall 5 in (12.7 cm) high, opening 26 in (66.0 cm) around
  5. After the casing: flap 2¼ in (5.7 cm) deep and 8 in (20.3 cm) wide

If the base is too big: switch to a 5.5 mm (US I-9) hook. If it’s too small: switch to a 6.5 mm (US K-10½) hook. Keep every stitch count the same and only change the hook. If the ends ruffle, your increases are too loose, so tighten them.

Basket (Make 3)

Base

Ch 21.

Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 18 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working along the other side of the foundation chain, sc in next 18 ch, 2 sc in last ch (the same ch as the first sc). Join with sl st to first sc. (42 sts)

That gives 18 sts on each straight side and 3 sts at each end.

Rnd 2: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st, here and in all later sc rnds). 2 sc in first st, sc in next 18 sts, 2 sc in each of next 3 sts, sc in next 18 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts. Join. (48 sts)

Rnd 3: Ch 1. Sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 18 sts, [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 18 sts, [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (54 sts)

Rnd 4: Ch 1. Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 18 sts, [sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 18 sts, [sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (60 sts)

Rnd 5: Ch 1. Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 18 sts, [sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 18 sts, [sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (66 sts)

Rnd 6: Ch 1. Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 18 sts, [sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 18 sts, [sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (72 sts)

Rnd 7: Ch 1. Sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 18 sts, [sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 18 sts, [sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (78 sts)

Each round adds 3 sts at each end, 6 per round in total, which keeps the oval flat. Each end now has 21 sts and each straight side has 18: 21 + 18 + 21 + 18 = 78. Checkpoint 1: 10¼ in (26.0 cm) × 4¼ in (10.8 cm).

Walls

Rnd 8 (turning ridge): Ch 1. Sc in BLO of each st around. Join. (78 sts)

The unused front loops leave a neat ridge where the base turns up into the wall.

Rnds 9–10: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (78 sts)

Checkpoint 2: the wall is about 1 in (2.5 cm) high.

Rnd 11 (first ladder round): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next st, ch 1, sk 1 st, dc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st; rep from * 24 more times. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (26 repeats: 52 dc + 26 ch-1 sps = 78 sts)

Rnds 12–15: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, dc in each of next 2 dc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp; rep from * 24 more times. Join to top of beg ch-3. (52 dc + 26 ch-1 sps = 78 sts each rnd)

The dc pairs sit on top of the pairs below, and each ch-1 lands over the ch-1 below. That gives 26 vertical columns of rectangular openings, five openings tall, with a thin bar between them at the top of each round. Checkpoint 3: the wall is 4 in (10.2 cm) high.

Rnd 16 (conversion round): Ch 1. Sc in each dc and in each ch-1 sp around. Join. (52 sc into dc + 26 sc into ch-1 sps = 78 sts)

Rnds 17–18: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (78 sts)

Don’t fasten off. Checkpoint 4: the wall is 5 in (12.7 cm) high, and the opening is 26 in (66.0 cm) around.

Dowel Casing

Flatten the basket so the join sits at one short end, and choose one long side as the back. Mark the 18 straight-side sts of Rnd 18 on that side plus 3 sts beyond each end of them, for 24 sts. The other 54 sts make the front curve.

Row 1: Sl st across to the first marked st. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each of the next 23 marked sts. Turn. (24 sts)

Rows 2–7: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (24 sts)

Fasten off and leave a 20 in (50.8 cm) tail. Checkpoint 5: the flap is 2¼ in (5.7 cm) deep and 8 in (20.3 cm) wide.

Fold the flap to the inside. Using the tail, whipstitch the top of Row 7 to the inside of the wall along Rnd 17, one stitch to one stitch, across all 24 sts. Leave the short ends open. The tube is about 2 in (5.1 cm) around and fits a ⅝ in (1.6 cm) dowel snugly.

Border (Rim)

Border gauge: You work 1 rev sc into each st, so the rim matches sc gauge at 3 sts per 1 in (2.5 cm). It adds about ¼ in (0.6 cm) of height.

Rnd 19 (rev sc): Join the yarn with a sl st in the first front st beside the casing. Ch 1, then rev sc in each of the 54 front sts, ending at the other side of the casing. Fasten off. (54 sts)

Why the math works: Rnd 18 has 78 sts. The casing uses 24 of them across the back, and the rim uses the other 54 across the front: 24 + 54 = 78. No stitch is skipped or used twice. The casing fold is already a firm, smooth edge, so it doesn’t need a rim. The front rim measures 54 ÷ 3 = 18 in (45.7 cm), exactly the length of the front of Rnd 18, so it won’t flare or pull in.

Make All Pieces

  • Baskets: 3, mauve, 78 sts per rnd, about 85 g / 102 m (112 yd) each
  • Connecting cords: 4, mauve
  • Hanger cord: 1, mauve
  • Dowels: 3, each 14 in (35.6 cm)

Layout grid (front view):

            [ wall hook ]
               / \ hanger cord
        |== dowel 1 ==|
        | Basket A |
        | | connecting cords L + R
        |== dowel 2 ==|
        | Basket B |
        | | connecting cords L + R
        |== dowel 3 ==|
        | Basket C |

Cords

Connecting cord (make 4): Ch 42. Sl st in the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (41 sl sts) Fasten off and leave an 8 in (20.3 cm) tail at each end. Each cord should be 13 in (33.0 cm) long. If it isn’t, add or remove chains before you work back.

Hanger cord (make 1): Ch 97. Sl st in the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (96 sl sts) Leave 8 in (20.3 cm) tails. The cord should be 30 in (76.2 cm) long.

Joining

Method: Slide a dowel through each casing and center it. Because the basket is 10¼ in (26.0 cm) wide, about 1⅞ in (4.8 cm) of dowel sticks out on each side.

Cord-to-dowel logic: Wrap each cord end once around the dowel, ¾ in (1.9 cm) in from the tip. Fold 2 in (5.1 cm) of cord back on itself and sew it down, one sl st to one sl st, for 6 sts. Each end uses 2 in (5.1 cm), so a 13 in (33.0 cm) connecting cord leaves a 9 in (22.9 cm) span between dowels. The 30 in (76.2 cm) hanger leaves 26 in (66.0 cm) for the triangle.

  1. Join the left ends of dowels 1 and 2 with one connecting cord, then join their right ends the same way.
  2. Join dowel 2 to dowel 3 the same way.
  3. Attach the hanger cord to both ends of dowel 1. Each 13 in (33.0 cm) half rises about 11½ in (29.2 cm) to the peak.

Tension: Sew snugly, but don’t pull so hard that the cord puckers. Measure each span before you knot the tails, because all four connecting cords need to match.

Size checkpoint: Lay the organizer flat. The dowels should be parallel and 9 in (22.9 cm) apart, and the total length should be about 35 in (88.9 cm).

Final Blocking

  1. Take out the dowels.
  2. Mist each basket lightly until it’s damp, not wet.
  3. Stuff each basket firmly with a folded towel to set the front curve.
  4. Pat the ladder columns so they run straight up and down.
  5. Let everything dry for about 24 hours, out of direct sun.
  6. Put the dowels back and hang the organizer.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • [ ] Each base measures 10¼ in (26.0 cm) × 4¼ in (10.8 cm) and lies flat
  • [ ] Each wall has 78 sts and 26 ladder columns
  • [ ] Openings line up straight, five per column
  • [ ] Each casing is 24 sts wide and sewn down across all 24 sts
  • [ ] Each rim has 54 rev sc
  • [ ] All connecting cords leave a 9 in (22.9 cm) span
  • [ ] Tails are woven in at least 2 in (5.1 cm)
  • [ ] The organizer hangs level

Troubleshooting

  • Base ruffles: The increases are loose. Tighten your tension or go down a hook size.
  • Base cups upward: An increase is missing. Count 78 sts at Rnd 7.
  • Ladder columns slant: Start each ch 3 directly over the join, and work into the dc, not the sps.
  • Walls flop: Use a firmer cotton or a smaller hook.
  • Dowel too tight: Add an 8th casing row.
  • Baskets tilt: Even out the cord spans and recheck the ¾ in (1.9 cm) wrap position.

Care

Remove the dowels and hand wash in cool water with mild soap. Reshape over a towel and lay flat to dry.

Final Notes

Here’s the measurement chain. A 78-st base measures 10¼ in (26.0 cm) × 4¼ in (10.8 cm). The walls stay at 78 sts and rise to 5 in (12.7 cm). A 24-st casing and a 54-st rim then bring each basket to 5¼ in (13.3 cm). Three baskets on 14 in (35.6 cm) dowels, spaced 9 in (22.9 cm) apart, hang about 35 in (88.9 cm) tall. Check each stage as you go and the finished organizer will match.

Happy crocheting!
