This strand curtain is made of open teardrop motifs that hang in long vertical lines, each finished with a soft tassel. The motifs look like falling raindrops. Light passes through their open centers, so the curtain softens a window or doorway without blocking it.
The sample uses teal and cream cotton in 8 strands that alternate teal and cream across the rod. Each strand has 7 teardrops and 1 matching tassel. The style is relaxed boho, and it works year-round or with a garland for the holidays.
All instructions use US crochet terms. Each teardrop is 3 in (7.6 cm) wide and 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall. The finished curtain is 31 in (78.7 cm) wide and hangs 45.75 in (116.2 cm) from the top of the rod to the tassel tips.
Construction is simple. You crochet each teardrop in the round around a chain ring, and graded stitch heights create the teardrop shape. You join the motifs as you go with a 4-chain stem. Hanging loops go at the top of each strand and tassels at the bottom.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished curtain: 31 in (78.7 cm) wide x 45.75 in (116.2 cm) long
- Skill level: Easy / advanced beginner
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton
- Hook: 4.5 mm (US G-7)
- Number of pieces: 56 teardrop motifs and 8 tassels
- Layout: 8 strands x 7 motifs
- Single motif size: 3 in (7.6 cm) wide x 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall
- Motif size before the final round: 2.5 in (6.4 cm) wide x 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall
- Edge depth: the final round of single crochet adds 0.25 in (0.6 cm) all the way around
- Stem length: 1 in (2.5 cm) between motifs
Materials
Use a smooth, firm cotton or cotton blend. Cotton holds the teardrop shape well, blocks crisply, and doesn’t stretch much under the weight of the strand. Avoid fuzzy or very stretchy acrylics, because they make the strands grow longer over time.
- Teal: 170 g, about 265 m (28 motifs, 4 hanging loops, 4 tassels)
- Cream: 170 g, about 265 m (28 motifs, 4 hanging loops, 4 tassels)
These quantities include a margin of about 15% for gauge differences and tassel trimming.
Tools:
- 4.5 mm (US G-7) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Locking stitch markers
- Stiff card 6.5 in (16.5 cm) tall, for wrapping tassels
- Rustproof pins and a foam blocking mat
- Wooden curtain rod or dowel, at least 36 in (91.4 cm) long
- Tape measure
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- tr: treble crochet
- st(s): stitch(es)
- rnd(s): round(s)
Special stitch: Treble crochet (tr). Yarn over twice, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). [Yarn over, pull through 2 loops] 3 times.
Point stitch. This is the first stitch of each round. Keep a marker in it, because it becomes the top tip of the teardrop.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 sc and 18 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) in worsted cotton with a 4.5 mm hook. Foundation chains run at about 4 ch per 1 in (2.5 cm).
Make one complete teardrop before you start the strands. Block it lightly and measure it. Every strand measurement depends on this one motif.
Checkpoints:
- After Rnd 1: the ring is about 2 in (5.1 cm) across when laid in a circle.
- After Rnd 2: 2.5 in (6.4 cm) wide x 3.75 in (9.5 cm) tall when gently pulled into a teardrop shape.
- After Rnd 3: 3 in (7.6 cm) wide x 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall.
If your motif is too big: go down to a 4 mm (US G-6) hook. If it’s still large, keep the hook but chain 28 for the ring instead of 30 and skip one 1-tr stitch on each side in Rnd 2. Only make that change once you’ve confirmed the new counts on a test motif.
If your motif is too small: go up to a 5 mm (US H-8) hook. Don’t add stitches, because the shaping depends on the exact counts.

Teardrop Motif (make 56)
Foundation: Ch 30. Sl st in the first ch to form a ring, taking care not to twist the chain.
Rnd 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st). Sc in the same ch as the join and in each ch around. Sl st in the first sc. Place a marker in the first sc; this is the point stitch. (30 sc)
Rnd 2 (shaping round): Ch 1. Then work as follows:
- Sc in the first st (the point stitch). (1 sc)
- Sc in the next 3 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts, dc in the next 3 sts. (9 sts)
- Across the bottom: 2 tr in the next st, [tr in the next st, 2 tr in the next st] 5 times. (17 tr worked over 11 sts)
- Dc in the next 3 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts, sc in the last 3 sts. (9 sts)
- Sl st in the first sc.
Count: 1 + 9 + 17 + 9 = 36 sts. Check: the 11 bottom stitches hold 6 groups of 2 tr and 5 single tr, for 12 + 5 = 17 tr. The stitches used are 1 + 9 + 11 + 9 = 30, matching Rnd 1.
The short stitches beside the point keep the top narrow and pointed. The tall trebles fan out across the bottom into the thick, rounded drop. Gently pull the motif into a teardrop shape and check the Rnd 2 measurement.
Rnd 3 (edging round): Ch 1. Then work as follows:
- Sc in the first st (point). (1 sc)
- Sc in the next 9 sts. (9 sc)
- Across the 17 tr: sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the next st. (23 sc)
- Sc in the last 9 sts. (9 sc)
- Sl st in the first sc.
Count: 1 + 9 + 23 + 9 = 42 sc. This round works 1 sc into each of the 36 existing stitches and adds 6 increases across the bottom: 36 + 6 = 42.
The increases sit symmetrically, so stitch 22 is the exact bottom center. It has 20 stitches on each side: stitches 2 to 21 and 23 to 42. Place a marker in stitch 22. You will join the next motif there.
Don’t fasten off. The stem is worked next, as described under Joining.
Make All Pieces
Quantities per color:
- Teal: 28 motifs, 4 hanging loops, 4 tassels (strands 1, 3, 5, 7)
- Cream: 28 motifs, 4 hanging loops, 4 tassels (strands 2, 4, 6, 8)
Layout grid (T = teal, C = cream; columns are strands, rows run top to bottom):
Strand: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Loop: T C T C T C T C
Row 1: T C T C T C T C
Row 2: T C T C T C T C
Row 3: T C T C T C T C
Row 4: T C T C T C T C
Row 5: T C T C T C T C
Row 6: T C T C T C T C
Row 7: T C T C T C T C
Tassel: T C T C T C T C
If you prefer, you can alternate colors within a strand (teal, cream, teal, and so on). Keep the counts the same per strand.
Joining
The motifs are joined as you go, building each strand from the top down. Each stem joins the point of one motif to the bottom center of the motif above it.
Top motif with hanging loop (motif 1 of each strand): Finish Rnd 3, then ch 4 for the stem. Ch 16 more, then sl st in the 16th ch from the hook (the first of the 16) to form the hanging loop. Fasten off and weave in the ends. The loop is about 2 in (5.1 cm) long when laid flat, which fits a rod up to 1.25 in (3.2 cm) in diameter.
Motifs 2 to 7: Finish Rnd 3 on the new motif and keep the loop on your hook. Ch 4, then sl st in the marked stitch 22 of the motif above. Make sure both motifs are face up and neither is twisted. Fasten off and weave in the ends along the chain.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: each stem connects exactly 1 stitch (the point, stitch 1) to exactly 1 stitch (bottom center, stitch 22). The join adds no stitches to either motif, so every motif keeps its 42-sc count and stays symmetrical.
Tension advice: chain the stems at the same tension as your foundation chain. Tight stems pull the points into sharp hooks, and loose stems make the strand sag. All stems on all 8 strands should match.
Strand checkpoint: lay one strand flat without stretching it. Seven motifs and six stems measure 7 x 4.25 in + 6 x 1 in = 35.75 in (90.8 cm). Add the top stem and loop, 1 in (2.5 cm) + 2 in (5.1 cm), for 38.75 in (98.4 cm). All 8 strands should be within 0.5 in (1.3 cm) of each other.
Border
A strand curtain has no fabric border. Its edges are the row of 8 hanging loops along the rod and the row of 8 tassels at the bottom.
Edge gauge: strands sit 4 in (10.2 cm) apart, center to center, which leaves a 1 in (2.5 cm) gap between neighboring motifs.
Top edge (rod side): 8 strands x 1 loop each = 8 loops. Mark the rod at 0 in, then every 4 in (10.2 cm) up to 28 in (71.1 cm), for 8 marks. Slide the loops onto the rod in the color order from the grid.
Bottom edge (tassel side): 8 strands x 1 tassel each = 8 tassels.
- Wrap matching yarn 30 times around the 6.5 in (16.5 cm) card.
- Slide a 12 in (30.5 cm) tie strand under the wraps at the top edge and knot it tightly.
- Cut the wraps along the bottom edge.
- Wrap a second strand 6 times around the bundle, 0.75 in (1.9 cm) below the top, and knot it. Bury the ends inside the tassel.
- Join yarn at stitch 22 of motif 7 and ch 4. Fasten off, leaving a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail.
- Tie the tassel’s top tie to the end of this stem. Weave all ends into the tassel head.
- Trim the tassel to 6 in (15.2 cm).
Why the math works: the width is 7 gaps x 4 in + one motif width of 3 in = 31 in (78.7 cm). The length is 38.75 in to the bottom of motif 7, plus 1 in (2.5 cm) of stem and 6 in (15.2 cm) of tassel, for 45.75 in (116.2 cm).
Final Blocking
- Soak all strands in cool water for 10 minutes. Press out the water in a towel; don’t wring them.
- Lay each strand flat on the blocking mat.
- Pin each motif to 3 in (7.6 cm) wide x 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall. Put one pin at the point and one at bottom center.
- Pull the top of each open center into a soft point so it echoes the outer shape.
- Straighten each stem to 1 in (2.5 cm).
- Comb the tassels straight with your fingers.
- Let everything dry completely, then trim any tassel strands that are uneven.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- [ ] Every motif has 42 sc in Rnd 3.
- [ ] Every motif measures 3 x 4.25 in (7.6 x 10.8 cm).
- [ ] All stems are joined into stitch 22 of the motif above.
- [ ] No motifs are twisted; all faces point forward.
- [ ] Each strand measures 38.75 in (98.4 cm) from the loop top to the bottom of motif 7.
- [ ] All tassels are trimmed to 6 in (15.2 cm).
- [ ] Strands are spaced 4 in (10.2 cm) apart, in the correct color order.
- [ ] All ends are woven in securely.
Troubleshooting
- The motif cups or ruffles: your trebles are too tight or too loose compared with your sc. Check your Rnd 2 count (36), and adjust your hook size if needed.
- The point is rounded, not pointed: pin the point firmly when blocking. Make sure Rnd 2 starts with sc, not hdc, at the point.
- The motif leans to one side: the bottom center is off. Recount Rnd 3; stitch 22 must have 20 stitches on each side.
- Strands are different lengths: remake the stems on the long strand at a firmer tension.
- Tassels look thin: add 5 to 10 more wraps.
Care
Hand wash in cool water and lay flat to dry, pinning lightly into shape. Don’t hang the strands while they’re wet, because the weight will stretch them.

Final Notes
Everything in this curtain follows from the measurements:
- 30 ch make the ring.
- 36 graded stitches shape the teardrop.
- 42 sc finish the motif at 3 x 4.25 in (7.6 x 10.8 cm).
- 1 in (2.5 cm) stems make a strand 38.75 in (98.4 cm) long.
- Tassels bring the drop to 45.75 in (116.2 cm).
- 4 in (10.2 cm) spacing gives a width of 31 in (78.7 cm).
Check the first motif carefully and every strand will match.
Happy crocheting!
