The Starlight Trio is a hanging lace charm made of three stars, stacked from largest to smallest on fine silver chain links. It hangs from a rearview mirror, a window latch or a tree branch, and it moves gently as the car moves.
The color plan is simple: royal blue and metallic silver thread. The large star has a solid blue center, silver spokes and a blue outline. The medium star is all silver. The small star is blue again, with a short ring of silver spokes in the middle. Alternating the colors keeps the strand from looking heavy.
All instructions use US crochet terms. The finished strand is about 9.6 in (24.4 cm) long from the top tip of the large star to the bottom tips of the small star. With the hanging loop included, it hangs about 12.1 in (30.7 cm).
Each star starts with a magic ring. You work a round of spokes, then shape the five arms in one round using taller stitches at the tips and short stitches in the valleys, and finish with an edging round of single crochet. After blocking, you join the stars with chain links and add a hanging loop.

Materials
Use a mercerized cotton thread for crisp stitches and clear points. For silver, pick a metallic-blend thread of the same weight, or a light silver-gray cotton if you prefer a matte look. The two threads should be close in thickness. Otherwise one star will block larger than planned.
- Color A – Royal Blue: 5 g, about 28 m (large star center and edge, small star)
- Color B – Silver: 5 g, about 28 m (large star spokes, medium star, small star spokes, links, loop)
These quantities include a generous margin. The whole charm uses well under half of each amount.
Tools:
– 1.5 mm (US steel 8) crochet hook
– Fine tapestry needle or beading needle
– Small sharp scissors
– Rust-proof pins and a foam blocking board
– Fabric stiffener or starch
– Ruler or tape measure marked in inches and cm
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet (yo twice)
- dtr – double treble crochet (yo 3 times)
- sp(s) – space(s)
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- MR – magic ring
- yo – yarn over
Special stitch – Tip loop: In the edging rounds, the chain worked in the middle of a tip space (ch 3 on the large and medium stars, ch 2 on the small star) is left open as a loop. Do not slip stitch it closed. This loop forms the point of the star and is also where the links attach.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge is less critical than on a garment, but it controls how well the three stars match each other. Make the large star first and check it at each stage.
- Chain gauge: 12 ch = 1 in (2.5 cm)
- After Round 2 (large star): solid ring 0.75 in (1.9 cm) across
- After Round 3 (large star): spoke circle 1.5 in (3.8 cm) across
- After Round 4 (large star): 3 in (7.6 cm) point to point
- After Round 5 (large star, blocked): 3.5 in (8.9 cm) point to point
If your star is too big: change to a 1.25 mm hook and remake it. Loose tall stitches, especially the dtr, are the usual cause.
If your star is too small: change to a 1.75 mm hook. If only the arms are short, pull up each loop of the tr and dtr a little more fully.

Large Star (Royal Blue and Silver)
Round 1 (Color A): MR, ch 3 (counts as dc), 14 dc in ring, sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. Pull the ring tight. (15 dc)
Round 2 (Color A): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; repeat from * 4 more times, sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. Fasten off. (25 dc)
Each repeat turns 3 stitches into 5, so 5 repeats give 25 stitches, exactly 5 per arm.
Round 3 (Color B): Join with sl st in any dc. Ch 6 (counts as tr + ch 2), tr in next dc, ch 2; repeat from * 23 more times, sl st in 4th ch of beginning ch-6. (25 tr, 25 ch-2 sps)
These are the silver spokes. Count the stitches: 25 spaces divide into 5 arms of 5 spaces each.
Round 4 (Color B): Sl st into first ch-2 sp. Ch 1.
Arm: sc in same sp (sp A), ch 4, dc in next sp (sp B), ch 5, (dtr, ch 5, dtr) in next sp (sp C, the tip), ch 5, dc in next sp (sp D), ch 4, sc in next sp (sp E), ch 2.
Work the arm 4 more times, starting each one with sc in the next sp. Sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
(Per arm: 2 sc, 2 dc, 2 dtr, and 6 ch-loops: ch-4, ch-5, ch-5 tip, ch-5, ch-4, ch-2. Total: 10 sc, 10 dc, 10 dtr, 30 ch-loops.)
The stitch heights climb from sc to dc to dtr and then come back down, which pulls each section into a point. The ch-2 between arms keeps the valleys flat.
Round 5 – Edging (Color A): See the Border section.
Medium Star (All Silver)
Round 1: MR, ch 3 (counts as dc), 14 dc in ring, sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. (15 dc)
Round 2: Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), dc in next dc, ch 2; repeat from * 13 more times, sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-5. (15 dc, 15 ch-2 sps)
There are 3 spaces per arm.
Round 3: Sl st into first ch-2 sp. Ch 1.
Arm: sc in same sp, ch 4, (tr, ch 4, tr) in next sp (tip), ch 4, sc in next sp, ch 1.
Work the arm 4 more times, starting each one with sc in the next sp. Sl st in first sc. Do not fasten off.
(Per arm: 2 sc, 2 tr, 4 ch-loops. Total: 10 sc, 10 tr, 20 ch-loops.)
Round 4 – Edging (Color B): See the Border section.
Small Star (Royal Blue with Silver Spokes)
Round 1 (Color A): MR, ch 1, 10 sc in ring, sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (10 sc)
Round 2 (Color B): Join with sl st in any sc. Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc in next sc, ch 1; repeat from * 8 more times, sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-4. Fasten off. (10 dc, 10 ch-1 sps)
There are 2 spokes per arm: one for the valley and one for the tip.
Round 3 (Color A): Join with sc in any dc (valley). Ch 4, skip ch-1 sp, (tr, ch 3, tr) in next dc (tip), ch 4, skip ch-1 sp, sc in next dc, ch 4, skip ch-1 sp, (tr, ch 3, tr) in next dc, ch 4, skip ch-1 sp; repeat from * 3 more times, sl st in first sc. (5 sc, 10 tr, 15 ch-loops)
Round 4 – Edging (Color A): See the Border section.
Make All Pieces
Make one of each star. Finish each star with its edging round before joining, because the links attach to the edging.
- Large star: 1 (Color A center and edge, Color B spokes)
- Medium star: 1 (all Color B)
- Small star: 1 (Color A, Color B spoke round)
- Links and loop: Color B only
Layout, from top to bottom:
( hanging loop, ch 60 )
|
[ LARGE STAR ] A / B
| ch 12
[ MEDIUM STAR ] B
| ch 12
[ SMALL STAR ] A / B
Each star hangs with one tip pointing straight up.
Joining
The stars are joined with single chain links in Color B. Each link starts at the bottom valley of the upper star and ends in the top tip loop of the star below it.
Finding the valleys: Hold a star with Arm 1 pointing up. The bottom valley is the single valley sc that sits between the two lower arms (Arms 3 and 4), directly opposite the top tip.
Link 1 (large to medium): Join Color B with sl st in the bottom valley sc of the large star. Ch 12, then sl st into the top tip loop of the medium star. Fasten off.
Link 2 (medium to small): Join Color B with sl st in the bottom valley sc of the medium star. Ch 12, then sl st into the top tip loop of the small star. Fasten off.
Hanging loop: Join Color B with sl st in the top tip loop of the large star. Ch 60, then sl st into the same tip loop. Fasten off. (Loop about 5 in / 12.7 cm around, hanging about 2.5 in / 6.4 cm above the star.)
Tension: Make the link chains at the same tension as your gauge swatch, at 12 ch to 1 in (2.5 cm). Tight chains twist and make the stars spin sideways. Loose chains stretch over time.
Size checkpoint: Lay the strand flat. It should measure 3.3 + 1 + 2.4 + 1 + 1.9 = 9.6 in (24.4 cm), and the stars should sit centered under one another.
Border
Each star’s border is its final round of single crochet. The rule is the same on every star: work 1 sc into each stitch, n sc into each ch-n loop, and add 1 extra sc at the tip so the point turns cleanly.
Border gauge: about 16 sc = 1 in (2.5 cm) along a straight edge.
Large Star – Round 5 (Color A)
Join with sc in first sc of Round 4.
Arm: (first sc already made), 4 sc in ch-4 sp, sc in dc, 6 sc in ch-5 sp, sc in dtr, (3 sc, ch 3, 3 sc) in ch-5 tip sp, sc in dtr, 6 sc in ch-5 sp, sc in dc, 4 sc in ch-4 sp, sc in sc, 1 sc in ch-2 sp (valley).
Work the arm 4 more times, starting each with sc in the next sc. Sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Count per arm: 6 sc worked into stitches + 27 sc worked into spaces (4 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 4 + 1) = 33 sc, plus 1 tip loop.
Round total: 165 sc + 5 ch-3 tip loops.
Medium Star – Round 4 (Color B)
Ch 1, sc in same sc.
Arm: (first sc already made), 5 sc in ch-4 sp, sc in tr, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in ch-4 tip sp, sc in tr, 5 sc in ch-4 sp, sc in sc, 1 sc in ch-1 sp (valley).
Repeat around. Sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Count per arm: 4 sc worked into stitches + 15 sc worked into spaces (5 + 4 + 5 + 1) = 19 sc, plus 1 tip loop.
Round total: 95 sc + 5 ch-3 tip loops.
Small Star – Round 4 (Color A)
Ch 1, sc in same sc.
Arm: (first sc already made), 4 sc in ch-4 sp, sc in tr, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in ch-3 tip sp, sc in tr, 4 sc in ch-4 sp.
Repeat around. Sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Count per arm: 3 sc worked into stitches + 12 sc worked into spaces (4 + 4 + 4) = 15 sc, plus 1 tip loop.
Round total: 75 sc + 5 ch-2 tip loops.
Why the Math Works
Every arm is symmetrical: the stitches on the way up the arm match the stitches on the way down, so the tip sits centered. Working one sc per chain along the arms keeps the edges straight with no ruffling or cupping. Putting only one sc in each valley keeps the inner angle sharp, so you get a real star rather than a rounded flower. Each round is an exact multiple of 5, so all five arms come out the same size.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends along the back of the edging round, staying within the same color. Trim close.
- Soak all three stars (already joined) in cool water for 10 minutes. Press out the water gently in a towel. Do not wring.
- Pin each star face up on the board. Pin the center first, then each tip loop, and check the point-to-point measurement: 3.5 in (8.9 cm), 2.5 in (6.4 cm) and 2 in (5.1 cm).
- Put a pin in each valley so the inner points are crisp.
- Lay the two link chains straight and pin each one at its midpoint, about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) from each end.
- Brush or dab on fabric stiffener until the thread is saturated. Blot off any extra so the lace holes stay open.
- Leave to dry completely, at least 24 hours, before unpinning.
- Open each spoke space with a needle tip if stiffener has filled it.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Large star: 25 spokes, 165 edge sc, 5 tip loops
- Medium star: 15 spokes, 95 edge sc, 5 tip loops
- Small star: 10 spokes, 75 edge sc, 5 tip loops
- All five arms on each star are the same length (within 1/16 in / 0.2 cm)
- Each star hangs with one tip straight up
- Links are 12 ch each, about 1 in (2.5 cm)
- Strand is 9.6 in (24.4 cm); with the loop, 12.1 in (30.7 cm)
- No loose ends show from the front; the stars are stiff and flat
Troubleshooting
Arms curl or cup: The tall stitches are too short or the chains are too tight. Work looser chains in the shaping round, or block more firmly with extra stiffener.
Edge ruffles: There are too many sc in the loops. Check that you’re working n sc per ch-n loop and only 1 sc in each valley.
Lopsided star: One arm has a miscounted space. Recount the spoke round: 25, 15 or 10. Each arm must use exactly 5, 3 or 2 spaces.
Star twists on the strand: The link starts in the wrong valley. Move it to the valley directly opposite the top tip.
Metallic thread frays: Cut short lengths, about 2 yd (1.8 m), and put a drop of stiffener on the ends before weaving in.
Center hole won’t close: Pull the magic ring tail tight before Round 2, then weave the tail in a full circle.
Care
Dust with a soft, dry brush. If the stars soften in humid weather, re-stiffen and re-block them flat, and keep them out of very hot direct sun to prevent fading.

Final Notes
Here is the measurement chain to check against. The large star’s center ring is 0.75 in (1.9 cm), it reaches 1.5 in (3.8 cm) at the spokes, 3 in (7.6 cm) after arm shaping, and 3.5 in (8.9 cm) after the edging and blocking. The medium star blocks to 2.5 in (6.4 cm), and the small star to 2 in (5.1 cm). The two 1 in (2.5 cm) links bring the strand to 9.6 in (24.4 cm), and the hanging loop brings the total drop to 12.1 in (30.7 cm). If each checkpoint matches, the finished charm will hang straight and balanced.
Happy crocheting!
