This bedspread is all about texture and light. Each block holds one fan-shaped leaf with ribbed rows, raised veins, and a scalloped lobe edge. An open chain lattice frames each leaf and lets your sheets show through.
The sample uses a single warm terracotta, which keeps the look calm and lets the stitch texture stand out. It suits a farmhouse, boho, or classic bedroom equally well.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished bedspread measures 89.75 in (228.0 cm) square. That covers the top of a queen mattress with a drop on three sides.
Construction is simple to follow. You crochet 169 identical leaf blocks and join them stitch-to-stitch into a 13 x 13 grid. Then you add a two-round border that ends in leaf-lobe scallops.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 89.75 in x 89.75 in (228.0 cm x 228.0 cm)
- Skill level: Intermediate
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4)
- Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
- Number of pieces: 169 leaf blocks
- Layout: 13 blocks across x 13 blocks down
- Piece size: 6.75 in (17.1 cm) square, 27 sts per side
- Size before border: 87.75 in x 87.75 in (222.9 cm x 222.9 cm)
- Border depth: 1 in (2.5 cm)
Materials
Choose a smooth worsted yarn with good stitch definition, such as a cotton blend or soft acrylic. Fuzzy or very splitty yarns hide the ribbing and the veins.
- Terracotta: 2,200 g, about 4,400 m (4,812 yd)
Each block uses about 10 g (roughly 20 m / 22 yd). Joining takes about 260 m (284 yd), and the border takes about 310 m (339 yd). The amount above includes a margin of about 10 percent. Buy it all from one dye lot.
Tools:
- 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers
- Measuring tape
- Blocking mats, rust-proof pins, and a spray bottle
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
- BLO: back loop only
- sk: skip
- st(s): stitch(es)
- sp(s): space(s)
- RS / WS: right side / wrong side
- rep: repeat
Special stitches:
- Lobe: 7 dc in the same st. The 4th dc is the lobe center.
- Corner lobe: 9 dc in the same corner sp.
- Surface sl st: Hold the yarn behind the work. Insert the hook from front to back between sts, pull up a loop, and draw it through the loop on the hook. This makes a raised chain line on the surface.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 sc and 18 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) in sc with a 5.0 mm hook.
Make one complete block and block it before you start production. This test piece confirms your tension for all 169 blocks.
Checkpoints:
- After leaf Row 4: the straight base edge is about 4 in (10.2 cm) wide.
- Finished leaf: about 5.5 in (14.0 cm) wide and 4.75 in (12.1 cm) tall, including the stem.
- Finished block: 6.75 in (17.1 cm) square, 27 sts per side.
- Two blocks joined: 13.5 in (34.3 cm).
- Three blocks joined: 20.25 in (51.4 cm).
If your block is larger than 6.75 in (17.1 cm), go down 0.5 mm in hook size. If it is smaller, go up 0.5 mm. A small error adds up across 13 blocks, so fix it now.

Leaf (make 169)
Rows 1–4 are worked back and forth from a magic ring and form a half-circle fan. Turn at the end of every row. The ch-3 at the start of a row counts as 1 dc.
Row 1 (RS): Magic ring, ch 3, 5 dc in ring. Pull the ring closed. (6 dc)
Row 2: Ch 3, dc BLO in same st as ch-3, 2 dc BLO in each of next 5 sts. (12 dc)
Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc BLO in next st, *dc BLO in next st, 2 dc BLO in next st; rep from * 4 more times. (18 dc)
Row 4: Ch 3, dc BLO in next st, 2 dc BLO in next st, *dc BLO in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc BLO in next st; rep from * 4 more times. (24 dc)
The back-loop rows create the ribbed, knit-look lines that radiate from the center.
Row 5 (lobes): Ch 1, *sc in next st, sk 1, lobe in next st, sk 1; rep from * 5 more times. (6 sc, 6 lobes = 48 sts)
Number the lobes 1 to 6 in the order you made them.
Row 6 (base and stem): Do not turn. Rotate the leaf so you can work along the straight base edge. Work 2 sc in each row-end of Rows 4, 3, 2, and 1 (8 sc). At the magic ring, ch 11, then sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 9 ch (10 sl sts; stem made). Work 2 sc in each row-end of Rows 1, 2, 3, and 4 (8 sc). Sl st in first sc of Row 5. Fasten off. (16 sc, 1 stem)
Veins: With RS facing, join a new length of yarn at the magic ring. Surface sl st in a straight line out to the base of lobe 1, about 6 sl sts. Fasten off. Repeat for each of the 6 lobes to make the raised veins.
Weave in all ends now. The stem is about 2 in (5.1 cm) long.
Frame
The frame turns the round leaf into a square. Work with RS facing.
Rnd 1 (lattice): Join yarn with sc in the tip of the stem. Ch 26, sc in center dc of lobe 6. Ch 8, (sc, ch 9, sc) in center dc of lobe 5. Ch 5, sc in center dc of lobe 4. Ch 5, sc in center dc of lobe 3. Ch 5, (sc, ch 9, sc) in center dc of lobe 2. Ch 8, sc in center dc of lobe 1. Ch 26, sl st in first sc. (9 sc, 9 ch-sps)
The two ch-9 loops point toward the top corners and form the small open rings in the lattice.
Rnd 2 (square): Ch 1. Sc in same sc as join (stem tip). In ch-26 sp: 13 sc, ch 2, 13 sc. Sc in next sc. 8 sc in ch-8 sp. Sc in next sc. In ch-9 loop: 4 sc, ch 2, 4 sc. Sc in next sc. 5 sc in next ch-5 sp, sc in next sc, 5 sc in next ch-5 sp, sc in next sc, 5 sc in next ch-5 sp. Sc in next sc. In ch-9 loop: 4 sc, ch 2, 4 sc. Sc in next sc. 8 sc in ch-8 sp. Sc in next sc. In ch-26 sp: 13 sc, ch 2, 13 sc. Sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (108 sc, 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Per-side check: Each side runs from one corner ch-2 sp to the next. It holds 27 sc, including the corner sc at each end.
- Bottom: 13 + 1 + 13 = 27
- Left and right sides: 13 + 1 + 8 + 1 + 4 = 27
- Top: 4 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 4 = 27
4 sides x 27 = 108, which matches the round total. At 4 sc per inch, 27 sts measure 6.75 in (17.1 cm).

Turn every block the same way, with the stems toward the head of the bed and the fans opening toward the foot.
Joining
Method: Slip stitch join through the back loops, worked from the WS.
Hold two blocks with WS facing you and the edges lined up. Sl st through both corner ch-2 sps. Then sl st through the back loop of each pair of matching sts, 27 pairs in total, and sl st through the next pair of corner ch-2 sps. Without cutting the yarn, pick up the next two blocks and continue the same seam.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: Each edge has 27 sts, so stitch 1 meets stitch 1 and stitch 27 meets stitch 27. Nothing is added or skipped. The corner ch-2 sps are joined to each other and are not counted as side sts.
Join all 12 vertical seams first, each running the full 13 blocks. Then work the 12 horizontal seams the same way, carrying the yarn across the intersections.
Tension: Keep the slip stitches as loose as your sc. A tight seam puckers the lace and shortens the bedspread. If needed, use a 5.5 mm hook for the seams only.
Size checkpoint: The joined grid should measure 87.75 in (222.9 cm) on each side, which is 13 x 6.75 in.
Border
Border gauge: Same as the block gauge, 4 sc per inch. Each lobe uses 4 sts, so each lobe is 1 in (2.5 cm) wide.
Border Rnd 1 (conversion): With RS facing, join with sc in any outer corner ch-2 sp, then ch 2 and sc in the same sp. *Sc in each sc to the next outer corner. At seams, skip the joined corner ch-2 sps and go straight from the last st of one block to the first st of the next. Work (sc, ch 2, sc) in the outer corner ch-2 sp; rep from * around, leaving out the last corner. Sl st in first sc.
Per side: 351 sts worked 1-per-existing-st (13 blocks x 27 sts) + 2 corner sc added = 353 sc. Round total: 1,412 sc and 4 corner ch-2 sps.
Border Rnd 2 (leaf lobes): Sl st into the next ch-2 corner sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 8 dc in same sp (corner lobe made). *Sc in first st of the side, [sk 1, lobe in next st, sk 1, sc in next st] 88 times, corner lobe in next corner ch-2 sp; rep from * around, leaving out the last corner lobe. Sl st in top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off.
Per side: 89 sc and 88 lobes. Round total: 356 sc, 352 lobes, and 4 corner lobes.
Why the math works: The lobe repeat uses 4 sts. One sc plus 88 repeats is 1 + (88 x 4) = 353, exactly the side count from Rnd 1. Every side starts and ends with an sc, so the corner lobes sit evenly. This only works because 13 x 27 + 2 is a multiple of 4 plus 1.
Final Blocking
- Weave in any remaining ends along the sc lines so they stay hidden.
- Lay the bedspread flat on blocking mats or on a clean carpet covered with towels.
- Spray it evenly until it is damp all the way through.
- Pin the four corners first to make a 89.75 in (228.0 cm) square, then pin the middle of each side.
- Pin the grid lines straight and check that each block measures 6.75 in (17.1 cm).
- Pin each border lobe into a rounded scallop, and open the ch-9 corner rings with a pin.
- Press the leaf veins and ribs gently with your fingers so they sit raised.
- Let it dry completely before unpinning, usually 24 to 48 hours.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- 169 blocks, all with stems toward the same edge
- Every leaf has 6 lobes and 6 raised veins
- Every block has 27 sc per side and 108 sc total
- All seams lie flat with no puckering
- Joined grid measures 87.75 in (222.9 cm) per side
- Border Rnd 1 has 353 sc per side
- Border Rnd 2 has 88 lobes per side plus 4 corner lobes
- Finished size is 89.75 in (228.0 cm) square
- All ends woven in securely
Troubleshooting
Leaf cups or ruffles: Your increases in Rows 2 to 4 are off. Recount to 12, 18, and 24 dc.
Leaf will not lie flat after Row 5: Make sure you skip 1 st on each side of every lobe.
Frame pulls the leaf out of shape: Your chains are too tight. Loosen your chain tension, or go up a hook size for Rnd 1 only.
Side count is not 27: Recheck the sc count in each ch-sp of Rnd 2 against the per-side check.
Seams ripple: Your joining sl sts are too tight. Rework them with a larger hook.
Border waves: Confirm you have 353 sts per side before starting the lobes.
Care
Hand wash in cold water, or machine wash on a gentle cycle inside a laundry bag. Lay flat to dry and reshape, and never hang it wet because the weight will stretch the lace.

Final Notes
The measurement chain is simple. 16 sc equals 4 in (10.2 cm), so 27 sts make a 6.75 in (17.1 cm) block. Thirteen blocks make 87.75 in (222.9 cm), and the 1 in (2.5 cm) border brings the bedspread to 89.75 in (228.0 cm) square. Check your gauge on the first block and keep your counts exact, and the whole bedspread will come together.
Happy crocheting!
