This bag holder makes a practical kitchen job look pretty. It is a tall, slim tube in dusty rose with raised vertical ribs. A light gray column of fan-shell lace runs down the front, and two little cream flowers with sage leaves sit near the top.
You push bags in through the wide top opening and pull them out one at a time from the small round hole at the bottom. The gray rims at both openings and the gray hanging strap give it a neat, finished look.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished holder measures 6.6 in (16.8 cm) wide when laid flat and 18.5 in (47.0 cm) tall, not counting the strap. The strap loop adds about 3.5 in (8.9 cm).
You work the body flat in rows as one rectangle, using intarsia to place the gray lace panel. Then you seam the rectangle into a tube. You finish by working the tapered bottom, the top rim and the strap straight onto the tube, and then sewing on the flowers.

Materials
A smooth worsted-weight cotton or cotton blend works best. It holds the rib texture firmly and shows the lace clearly. Acrylic also works, but the tube will be a little softer. The amounts below assume about 180 m per 100 g.
- Dusty Rose (main color): 150 g / 270 m
- Light Gray (lace panel, rims, strap): 60 g / 108 m
- Cream (flowers): 5 g / 9 m
- Sage Green (leaves): 5 g / 9 m
- Golden Tan (flower centers): 1 g / 2 m
Tools:
– 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
– 3 yarn bobbins, or small butterflies of yarn
– Tapestry needle
– Stitch markers
– Measuring tape
– Spray bottle and a cylinder to block over, such as a rolled towel or a 2-liter bottle
All quantities include a margin of about 15% for swatching and weaving in ends.

- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- sc2tog: single crochet 2 together
- FPdc: front post double crochet
- BPdc: back post double crochet
- sk: skip
- sp: space

Special stitches
– Fan: 9 dc in the same stitch.
– Arch: ch 4, sk 4 dc, sc in the next (center) dc of the fan, ch 4, sk 4 dc.
Counting note: The beginning ch 2 does not count as a stitch. Every ch in a ch-1 or ch-4 counts as 1 stitch position. This keeps the lace panel at exactly 15 positions in every row.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Rib gauge: 16 sts and 8 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) in FPdc/BPdc rib.
Single crochet gauge: 16 sc and 16 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm).
Test before you start. Ch 22. Dc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across (20 dc). Then work 9 rows of rib: dc in the first st, alternate FPdc and BPdc across, and dc in the last st.
Measure across the middle 16 sts. They should measure 4 in (10.2 cm), and 8 rows should measure 4 in (10.2 cm).
- Swatch too big: Go down 0.5 mm.
- Swatch too small: Go up 0.5 mm.
Checkpoints
– After Row 1: 13.25 in (33.7 cm) wide
– After Row 9: 4.5 in (11.4 cm) tall
– After Row 17: 8.5 in (21.6 cm) tall
– After Row 33: 16.5 in (41.9 cm) tall
– After seaming: 6.6 in (16.8 cm) flat width
– Bottom opening: 6.5 in (16.5 cm) around, about 2 in (5.1 cm) across

Body
The body is 53 sts wide, split into three sections:
- Rose A: sts 1–19, 4.75 in (12.1 cm)
- Gray lace panel: sts 20–34, 3.75 in (9.5 cm)
- Rose B: sts 35–53, 4.75 in (12.1 cm)
Stitch 27 is the center of the panel. It sits exactly opposite the back seam.
Wind one bobbin of gray and a second ball of rose before you start. At each color change, drop the old color on the WS, pick up the new one from underneath, and twist the two strands once so no hole forms. Work the last yarn-over of the stitch before the change with the new color.
Foundation: With Rose, ch 55.
Row 1 (WS): Dc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Turn. (53 dc)
Row 2 (RS, fan row):
1. With Rose A, ch 2. Dc in the first st, then (FPdc, BPdc) 9 times. (19 sts)
2. Change to Gray. Dc in the next st, ch 1, sk 1, dc in the next st, sk 4, Fan in the next st (st 27), sk 4, dc in the next st, ch 1, sk 1, dc in the next st. (15 positions)
3. Change to Rose B. (BPdc, FPdc) 9 times, then dc in the last st. (19 sts)
4. Turn. (53 sts)
Row 3 (WS, arch row):
1. With Rose B, ch 2. Dc in the first st. Then work post stitches as established: BPdc around each FPdc and FPdc around each BPdc, 18 sts. (19 sts)
2. With Gray: dc in the dc, dc in the ch-1 sp, dc in the dc, then work an Arch over the fan. Dc in the dc, dc in the ch-1 sp, dc in the dc. (3 + 4 + 1 + 4 + 3 = 15 positions)
3. With Rose A: work post stitches as established for 18 sts, then dc in the last st. (19 sts)
4. Turn. (53 sts)
Working the post stitches this way keeps every rib raised on the RS.
Row 4 (RS, fan row):
1. Rose A as in Row 2. (19 sts)
2. With Gray: dc in the first dc, ch 1, sk 1 dc, dc in the next dc, sk the ch-4 sp, Fan in the sc, sk the ch-4 sp, dc in the next dc, ch 1, sk 1 dc, dc in the last dc. (15 positions)
3. Rose B as in Row 2. (19 sts)
4. Turn. (53 sts)
Rows 5–33: Repeat Rows 3 and 4 in turn, ending with a Row 3 (arch row). This gives 16 fans in total. (53 sts per row)
The body now measures 13.25 in (33.7 cm) × 16.5 in (41.9 cm). Fasten off all three yarns and leave a 20 in (50.8 cm) rose tail.
Seam: Fold the body RS together so the two side edges meet. With the rose tail, whipstitch through the edge dc of each row, matching all 33 rows. Turn the tube RS out. The seam now runs down the center back.
Border
The border uses sc gauge: 4 sc and 4 rnds = 1 in (2.5 cm). The tube has 53 sts around. The front half is sts 14–40 (27 sts, centered on st 27), and the back half is sts 41–53 plus 1–13 (26 sts).
Bottom taper and opening
Work into the free loops of the foundation chain.
Rnd 1: Join Rose at the seam. Ch 1, sc in each of the next 51 sts, sc2tog. Join. (51 + 1 = 52 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, (sc in the next 2 sts, sc2tog) 13 times. Join. (26 + 13 = 39 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, (sc in the next st, sc2tog) 13 times. Join. (13 + 13 = 26 sts) Fasten off Rose.
Rnds 4–5: Join Gray. Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (26 sts) Fasten off.
The opening is now 6.5 in (16.5 cm) around, which is 26 sts at 4 sts per inch. The bottom taper adds 1.25 in (3.2 cm).
Top rim
Rnd 1: Join Gray at the seam. Ch 1, sc in each st of Row 33 around, counting every ch of the arches as a st. Join. (53 sc: 27 front, 26 back)
Rnds 2–3: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (53 sc) Do not fasten off.
The rim adds 0.75 in (1.9 cm). Number the Rnd 3 sts starting from the seam, so that sts 53 and 1 sit on either side of it.
Hanging strap
- Row 1: Sl st across to st 50. Ch 30, sk the next 6 sts (51–53 and 1–3), and sl st in st 4. (30 ch)
- Row 2: Sl st in st 5, turn. Sc in each ch across, then sl st in st 49. (30 sc)
- Row 3: Turn. Sc in each sc across, then sl st in st 6. (30 sc)
- Fasten off.
The strap is 7.5 in (19.1 cm) long and forms a loop that rises about 3.5 in (8.9 cm) above the rim.
Why the math works: Every row of the body holds exactly 53 positions (19 + 15 + 19), so the top and bottom edges both give 53 sts. The bottom takes away 1, then 13, then 13 sts, reaching 26. That is exactly half the body count, which narrows the tube into a snug opening. The top rim never changes its count, so the opening stays the same width as the body and never ruffles.
Flowers and Leaves
Flower (make 2, Cream):
– Rnd 1: Make a magic ring and work 5 sc in it. Join. (5 sc)
– Rnd 2: In each sc, work (sl st, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st). (5 petals)
Each flower is about 1.25 in (3.2 cm) across. With Golden Tan, make one French knot in each center.
Leaf (make 4, Sage Green):
1. Ch 8.
2. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work: sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc, sl st. (7 sts)
3. Ch 1 and rotate the leaf.
4. Down the other side of the chain, work: sl st, sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc. (7 sts)
5. Sl st to the tip and fasten off.
Each leaf is about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) long.
Placement:
1. Center the cluster on the Rose A ribs, 1 in (2.5 cm) below the top rim and just left of the lace panel.
2. Sew 2 leaves angled up and out behind the cluster, and 2 leaves angled down.
3. Sew the flowers on top, overlapping each other slightly, with one sitting a little higher than the other.
4. Stitch through the flower centers and leaf bases only, so the petals and leaf tips stay lifted.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends along same-color stitches.
- Slide the holder over a rolled towel or a 2-liter bottle that is about 13.25 in (33.7 cm) around.
- Ease the ribs straight up and down and line up the fans with the center front.
- Spray until damp, but not soaked.
- Pat the height to 16.5 in (41.9 cm) between the rims.
- Shape the bottom rim into a round opening.
- Pull the flower petals into shape.
- Let it dry completely before removing.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Every body row has 53 sts (19 + 15 + 19).
- There are 16 fans, centered opposite the seam.
- No gaps at the intarsia color changes.
- The ribs are raised on the RS for the full height.
- The seam is flat and all 33 rows are matched.
- Bottom Rnd 3 has 26 sts, and the opening is about 2 in (5.1 cm) across.
- The top rim has 53 sts and lies flat.
- The strap is anchored at sts 4–6 and 49–50.
- The flowers are secure and the petal tips are free.
Troubleshooting
- Holes at the color changes: You skipped the twist. Twist the old and new strands once on the WS at every change.
- The lace panel is narrower than the ribs: Lace pulls in less than post stitches. Work the panel dc a little looser, or try a 5.0 mm hook for the gray sections only.
- The ribs flip to the WS: On WS rows, work BPdc around each FPdc and FPdc around each BPdc.
- Bags fall out of the bottom: Work an extra Rnd 3–style decrease round. This brings the count from 26 down to 20 sts and the opening to about 5 in (12.7 cm) around.
- The top rim ruffles: Recount Rnd 1 and make sure you have exactly 53 sc.
- The strap stretches: Add a 4th row of 30 sc.
Care
Hand wash in cool water. Press out the water in a towel and dry flat over a cylinder so the holder keeps its shape.

Final Notes
Each stage builds on the one before:
- 16 sts = 4 in (10.2 cm), so 53 sts give 13.25 in (33.7 cm) around.
- 33 rows give 16.5 in (41.9 cm) of height.
- The bottom decreases to 26 sts, a 6.5 in (16.5 cm) opening.
- The top rim holds 53 sts and adds 0.75 in (1.9 cm).
- Together with the 1.25 in (3.2 cm) bottom, the holder is 18.5 in (47.0 cm) tall, or about 22 in (55.9 cm) including the strap.
Check your gauge once and every other measurement follows from it. For a second holder, try sage green with cream lace.
Happy crocheting!
