Rosy Lattice Grocery Bag Holder Crochet Pattern

The Rosy Lattice Grocery Bag Holder is a tall tube that hangs behind a cabinet door and keeps plastic shopping bags tidy. You push bags in through the open top and pull them out one at a time through an oval slot near the bottom.

This version has a dusty rose mesh body. The oval base, bottom band and top band are solid cream. Just below the top band is a small cluster of three rolled roses, two cream five-petal flowers and green leaves. A narrow dusty rose strap rises from the back of the rim and wraps around a wooden ring for hanging. The same design also works in sage green with scattered cream daisies (see the Colorway Note).

The pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished body is about 14 in (35.6 cm) tall and 6.9 in (17.5 cm) wide when laid flat. The whole piece is about 20 in (50.8 cm) long to the top of the ring.

You work the holder in one piece from the bottom up:
– an oval base
– a solid single crochet band
– a mesh body, with the slot worked in rows
– a solid top band
– a strap at the back

The flowers and leaves are made separately and sewn on.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished body: 14 in (35.6 cm) tall, 13.7 in (34.8 cm) around, 4.4 in (11.2 cm) across
  • Total hanging length: about 20 in (50.8 cm), including the ring
  • Skill level: Easy-intermediate
  • Terminology: US
  • Yarn weight: Worsted (#4), cotton or cotton blend
  • Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
  • Number of pieces: 1 body, plus 3 roses, 2 small flowers and 4 leaves sewn on
  • Layout: One upright tube, open at the top, with one pull-out slot at the front
  • Base size: 5.5 in (14.0 cm) x 3 in (7.6 cm) oval
  • Size before top band: about 12.5 in (31.8 cm) tall
  • Top band depth: 1.5 in (3.8 cm)

Materials

Choose a smooth worsted cotton. Cotton holds its shape when the holder is full of bags, and it shows the mesh squares clearly.

  • Main color (MC), Dusty Rose: 70 g (133 m), for the mesh, strap, roses, flower centers and slot edging
  • Contrast color (CC), Cream: 60 g (114 m), for the base, bands and flower petals
  • Leaf Green: 5 g (10 m)
  • 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
  • Wooden ring, 2.75 in (7.0 cm) across
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

These amounts include about 15 percent extra, enough for a gauge swatch and small fixes.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • sc2tog: single crochet 2 together
  • BLO: back loop only
  • sp: space
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • rnd(s): round(s)

Mesh unit: dc in next dc, ch 1, skip the ch-1 sp. Each mesh unit counts as 2 sts (1 dc + 1 ch).

Gauge and Checkpoints

  • Single crochet: 14 sts and 16 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm)
  • Mesh: 7 mesh units (14 sts) = 4 in (10.2 cm) wide; 5 rnds = 3 in (7.6 cm) tall

Make the base first and use it as your test piece. Every later measurement depends on it.

Checkpoints:

  1. After Rnd 4, the base is 5.5 in (14.0 cm) x 3 in (7.6 cm).
  2. After Rnd 11, the cream band is 1.75 in (4.4 cm) tall.
  3. After Rnd 30, the holder is about 12.5 in (31.8 cm) tall.
  4. After Rnd 36, the body is about 14 in (35.6 cm) tall.

If the base is too big, go down half a hook size. If it’s too small, go up half a size. If only the mesh height is off, add or remove plain mesh rounds between Rnd 19 and Rnd 30. Keep every round at 48 sts.

Pattern

Base (CC, Cream)

Ch 15.

Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 12 ch (13 sc), 3 sc in last ch. Now work along the other side of the foundation ch: sc in next 12 ch, 2 sc in last ch (the same ch as the first sc). Join with sl st to first sc. (30 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 12 sts, 2 sc in each of next 3 sts, sc in next 12 sts, 2 sc in each of last 2 sts. Join. (36 sts)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 12 sts, [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 12 sts, [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (42 sts)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 12 sts, [sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 12 sts, [sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] 2 times. Join. (48 sts)

Each round adds 6 sts, all at the curved ends. The straight sides stay at 12 sts, so the base stays oval.

Bottom Band (CC, Cream)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around. Join. (48 sts) The unused front loops make a neat ridge and turn the work upward.

Rnds 6–11: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (48 sts)

Fasten off CC.

Mesh Body (MC, Dusty Rose)

Rnd 12: Join MC in any st at center back. Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), skip next st, [dc in next st, ch 1, skip next st] 23 times. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-4. (24 dc + 24 ch-1 sps = 48 sts)

Rnd 13: Ch 4, [dc in next dc, ch 1] 23 times. Join to 3rd ch of beg ch-4. (24 mesh units, 48 sts)

From here on, “work a mesh round” means repeat Rnd 13.

Dispensing Slot

You work the slot in 3 rows, leaving 9 sts at the front unworked. The round starts at center back, so the gap falls at center front.

Row 14: Ch 4, dc in next dc, [ch 1, dc in next dc] 18 times. Turn. (20 dc + 19 ch-1 sps = 39 sts) This leaves 4 dc and 5 ch-1 sps (9 sts) unworked.

Row 15: Ch 4, dc in next dc, [ch 1, dc in next dc] 17 times, ch 1, dc in 3rd ch of turning ch. Turn. (39 sts)

Row 16: Repeat Row 15, but do not turn at the end. (39 sts)

Rnd 17 (bridge): Ch 9, sl st to 3rd ch of the turning ch at the start of Row 16. (39 sts + 9 ch = 48 sts)

Rnd 18: Ch 4, [dc in next dc, ch 1] 18 times, dc in last dc before the bridge. Then work over the bridge: ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch, [ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch] 3 times, ch 1, skip last ch. Join to 3rd ch of beg ch-4. (20 dc + 4 dc over bridge = 24 dc; 48 sts)

The slot is 2.6 in (6.6 cm) wide and about 1.8 in (4.6 cm) tall.

Rnds 19–30: Work 12 mesh rounds. (48 sts each)

You now have 18 rounds and rows of dc, about 10.8 in (27.4 cm) of mesh. Fasten off MC.

Flowers and Leaves

Rolled Rose (make 3, MC): Ch 21.

  • Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, [ch 2, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch] 9 times. (10 sc, 9 ch-2 sps)
  • Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sl st in first sc, [5 dc in next ch-2 sp, sl st in next sc] 9 times. (9 petals)

Leave a 10 in (25.4 cm) tail. Roll the strip tightly, starting from the first petal, and stitch through the base to hold it. Each rose is about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) across.

Small Flower (make 2):
– Rnd 1 (MC): Make a magic ring, 5 sc in ring, join. Fasten off. (5 sts)
– Rnd 2 (CC): Join CC in any sc. [(ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, sl st) in same st, sl st in next st] 5 times. (5 petals)

Each flower is about 1.25 in (3.2 cm) across.

Leaf (make 4, Leaf Green): Ch 7. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch. Work along the other side of the ch: sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st. (12 sts) Each leaf is about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) long.

Border: Top Band, Slot Edging and Strap

The top band uses the same sc gauge as the base: 14 sts = 4 in (10.2 cm).

Rnd 31 (conversion): Join CC at center back. Ch 1, sc in each dc and in each ch-1 sp around. Join. (24 sc in dc + 24 sc in sps = 48 sts)

Rnds 32–36: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (48 sts) Fasten off.

Why the math works: The base, both bands and the mesh all have 48 sts. In the mesh, each unit is 1 dc plus 1 ch, so 24 units make 48 sts. Rnd 31 turns those 48 sts back into 48 sc with no stitches added. That keeps the top band the same size as the bottom band: 13.7 in (34.8 cm) around.

Slot edging: Join MC at a lower corner of the slot. Work 9 sc across the bottom edge, 6 sc up the side (2 per row end), 9 sc across the bridge chain, and 6 sc down the other side. Join. (9 + 6 + 9 + 6 = 30 sts) Fasten off.

Strap (MC): Find the 16 center-back sts of Rnd 36 and join MC in the first one.

  • Row 1: Ch 1, sc in 16 sts. Turn. (16 sts)
  • Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc across to last 2 sts, sc2tog. Turn. (14 sts)
  • Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st. Turn. (14 sts)
  • Rows 4–10: Repeat Rows 2–3, ending with a decrease row. Rows 4, 6, 8 and 10 have 12, 10, 8 and 6 sts. (6 sts after Row 10)
  • Rows 11–20: Ch 1, sc in 6 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

The strap starts 4.6 in (11.7 cm) wide and narrows to 1.7 in (4.3 cm). It is 5 in (12.7 cm) long. Fold the last 6 rows over the wooden ring to the wrong side and whipstitch them down. About 3.5 in (8.9 cm) of strap shows above the rim.

Appliqué:
– Pin the three roses in a triangle on the front, left of center, just below the top band.
– Tuck the two small flowers below and to the right of the roses.
– Slip the leaves out from behind the cluster.
– Sew each piece through the dc posts of the mesh, not through the ch-1 sps, so it lies flat.

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends along dc posts or inside the sc bands.
  2. Spray the holder lightly until it is damp, not wet.
  3. Slide a rolled towel or a bottle about 4.5 in (11.4 cm) wide inside.
  4. Gently pull the mesh lengthwise until the holes are square.
  5. Pat the slot into an even oval and press the flowers flat.
  6. Let it dry completely before hanging.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • The base lies flat and measures 5.5 in (14.0 cm) x 3 in (7.6 cm).
  • Every round has 48 sts, and the mesh has 24 squares around.
  • The slot is centered at the front and is 2.6 in (6.6 cm) wide.
  • Both cream bands are the same width.
  • The strap is centered at the back and sewn securely around the ring.
  • All flowers and leaves are stitched firmly and lie flat.
  • The body is about 14 in (35.6 cm) tall.

Troubleshooting

The base cups or ruffles. Cupping means your increases are too tight; ruffling means they’re too loose. Check that each round adds exactly 6 sts.

The mesh slants. Make sure you join into the 3rd ch of the beg ch-4 every round. Blocking also straightens mild slanting.

The slot is lopsided. Count 39 sts in each slot row. If you have 40, you worked into the turning chain twice.

The holder is too short. Add mesh rounds before Rnd 31. Each round adds about 0.6 in (1.5 cm).

The strap stretches. Work the strap with a smaller hook, or sew a strip of cotton tape behind it.

Care

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and lay flat to dry. Reshape the mesh and slot while damp.

Colorway Note

For the sage version:
– Use Sage Green as MC (70 g, 133 m) and Cream as CC.
– Add 3 g (6 m) of Yellow for the flower centers.
– Skip the roses and make 7 small flowers with yellow centers and cream petals.
– Sew them in two loose clusters: 3 near the top band and 4 lower down on the other side.

Crocheted tissue pouches decorated with flowers in pink and sage hanging on a yellow wall.

Final Notes

Here is the measurement chain:
– a 48-st oval base, 5.5 in (14.0 cm) x 3 in (7.6 cm)
– a 1.75 in (4.4 cm) cream band
– 10.8 in (27.4 cm) of 24-square mesh with a 2.6 in (6.6 cm) slot
– a 1.5 in (3.8 cm) top band

Together they make a 14 in (35.6 cm) body that holds a good stack of bags. Check your base first and keep every round at 48 sts, and the rest will follow.

Happy crocheting!
