This two-tier hanging organizer has two matching oval baskets. Each one has a solid single crochet base, open fan lace walls, and a firm rim with a wooden dowel threaded through it. A crocheted strap goes over a wall hook, and two short cords hang the lower basket below the upper one. It works well for soap bottles, brushes, and spare toilet paper.
The whole organizer is made in one neutral color, a warm cream or oatmeal cotton cord, which gives it a calm boho-farmhouse look. Dark wood dowels set off the fans nicely.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. Each basket is 13 in (33.0 cm) long, 5 in (12.7 cm) deep, and 6 in (15.2 cm) tall. Hung up, the organizer measures about 21 in (53.3 cm) from the peak of the strap to the bottom of the lower basket.
To make each basket, you crochet an oval base, turn up the walls with a back-loop round, and work six rounds of fan lace. Then you add a solid rim with two dowel slots and finish with a reverse single crochet edge. Last, you crochet one strap and two cords and put everything together around the dowels.
Finished Size and Construction

Materials
Use a smooth, firm cotton or cotton-blend cord. It holds the fan shapes, blocks well, and copes with bathroom humidity. Soft acrylic tends to sag.
- Cream / Oatmeal: 250 g, about 425 m (465 yd)
Each basket uses about 85 g, and the strap and cords use about 15 g together. These quantities include a margin of about 25% for your gauge swatch and for differences in tension.
Tools:
- 5.0 mm (H-8) hook
- 4 locking stitch markers
- Tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape
- 2 wooden dowels, 3/4 in (1.9 cm) thick x 16 in (40.6 cm) long
- 1 sturdy wall hook
- Optional: fabric stiffener
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- BLO – back loop only
- rev sc – reverse single crochet (crab stitch)
- inc – 2 sc in the same st
- sk – skip
- sp(s) – space(s)
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rep – repeat
Open Fan (special stitch): In the same st, work (dc, ch 1) 6 times, then dc. This makes 7 dc spokes with 6 ch-1 spaces between them. The 4th dc is the center dc.
Rev sc: Working from left to right, insert the hook into the next st to the right, pull up a loop, yarn over, and draw through both loops.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 14 sc x 16 rounds = 4 in (10.2 cm). That works out to 3.5 sts per inch and 0.25 in (0.6 cm) per round.
Finish one whole basket before you start the second, and check it at each stage:
- After Rnd 5: base 10.5 in x 2.5 in (26.7 cm x 6.4 cm)
- After Rnd 10: base 13 in x 5 in (33.0 cm x 12.7 cm), lying flat
- After Rnd 13: walls 0.75 in (1.9 cm), standing straight
- After Rnd 19: walls 4.5 in (11.4 cm)
- After Rnd 24: walls 5.75 in (14.6 cm)
- After the border: walls 6 in (15.2 cm)
If your basket comes out too big, change to a 4.5 mm hook. If it is too small, change to a 5.5 mm hook. If only the base ruffles, use a smaller hook for the base alone.

Basket (Make 2)
Oval Base
Join each round with a sl st to the first st. Do not turn.
Rnd 1: Ch 31. Work 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 28 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working along the opposite side of the chain, sc in next 28 ch. (62 sts: 3 per end + 28 per long side)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, inc in each of next 3 sts, sc in next 28, inc in each of next 3 sts, sc in next 28. (68 sts: 6 per end)
Rnds 3–10: Ch 1, *(sc in next N sts, inc) 3 times, sc in next 28; rep from * once. N is 1 on Rnd 3 and goes up by 1 each round. Each round adds 6 sts.
- Rnd 3 (N=1): 74 sts (9 per end)
- Rnd 4 (N=2): 80 sts (12 per end)
- Rnd 5 (N=3): 86 sts (15 per end)
- Rnd 6 (N=4): 92 sts (18 per end)
- Rnd 7 (N=5): 98 sts (21 per end)
- Rnd 8 (N=6): 104 sts (24 per end)
- Rnd 9 (N=7): 110 sts (27 per end)
- Rnd 10 (N=8): 116 sts (30 per end)
Check: 30 + 28 + 30 + 28 = 116.
Lower Wall
Rnd 11: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st. (116 sts) This makes a crisp fold line, and the walls rise from it.
Rnd 12 (conversion): Ch 1, sc in each st, working 1 inc at the middle of each long side and each end. (116 sts worked 1 per st + 4 extra = 120 sts)
Rnd 13: Ch 1, sc in each st. (120 sts) The fan pattern needs a multiple of 8, and 120 sts gives 15 repeats of 8 sts.
Fan Lace Walls
Skip the ch-3 spaces unless an instruction says to work into them. Each round begins in the same st as the join.
Rnd 14 (Fan): Ch 1, sc in next st, sk 3, Open Fan in next st, sk 3; rep from * 15 times. (15 fans + 15 sc)*
Rnd 15 (Arch): Ch 6 (counts as dc + ch 3), sc in center dc of next fan, ch 3, dc in next sc, ch 3, sc in center dc of next fan, ch 3; rep from * 14 times. Join to 3rd ch of beg ch-6. (15 dc + 15 sc + 30 ch-3 sps)*
Rnd 16 (Offset Fan): Ch 3 (counts as dc), (ch 1, dc) 6 times in same st, sc in next sc, Open Fan in next dc, sc in next sc; rep from * 14 times. Join to top of beg ch-3. (15 fans + 15 sc)* These fans sit between the Rnd 14 fans, which gives overlapping scallops in a brick layout.
Rnd 17 (Arch): Sl st across to the center dc of the first fan (6 sl sts). Ch 1, sc in same dc, ch 3, dc in next sc, ch 3, sc in center dc of next fan, ch 3, dc in next sc, ch 3; rep from * 14 times. (15 sc + 15 dc + 30 ch-3 sps)*
Rnd 18 (Fan): Ch 1, sc in same st, Open Fan in next dc, sc in next sc, Open Fan in next dc; rep from * 14 times. (15 fans + 15 sc)* These fans line up with the Rnd 14 fans.
Rnd 19 (Arch): Work as Rnd 15. (15 dc + 15 sc + 30 ch-3 sps)
Each fan is about 2.25 in (5.7 cm) wide, so each long side shows 5 fans.
Rnd 20 (conversion): Ch 1, sc in next st, 3 sc in next ch-3 sp; rep from * 30 times. (30 sts worked 1 per st + 90 sc in spaces = 120 sts)*
Rim with Dowel Slots
Rnd 21: Ch 1, sc in each st. (120 sts) Flatten the basket and mark 40 sts front, 20 sts end, 40 sts back, 20 sts end. Move the start of the round to the first front st.
Rnd 22 (slots): Ch 1, sc in 40 sts, sc in next 8, ch 4, sk 4, sc in next 8; rep from * once. (112 sc + 2 ch-4 sps)* Each slot is about 1 1/8 in (2.9 cm) wide and centered on a short end, which leaves room for the 3/4 in (1.9 cm) dowel.
Rnd 23 (conversion): Ch 1, sc in each sc, and work 4 sc in each ch-4 sp. (112 sts worked 1 per st + 8 sc in spaces = 120 sts) The slot opening stays below these sc.
Rnd 24: Ch 1, sc in each st. (120 sts)
Make All Pieces
Make every piece in Cream / Oatmeal:
- Baskets: 2
- Hanging strap: 1. Ch 85. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (84 sc). Row 2: ch 1, turn, sl st in each sc (84 sl sts). It measures 24 in (61.0 cm).
- Connector cords: 2. Ch 43. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (42 sc). Row 2: ch 1, turn, sl st in each sc (42 sl sts). Each measures 12 in (30.5 cm).
The slip stitch row keeps the cords from stretching.

Joining
Method: Fold each cord end around a dowel end and whipstitch it closed.
- Push Dowel 1 through both slots of Basket 1, so it runs across the inside just below the rim. It should stick out 1.5 in (3.8 cm) at each end. Do the same with Dowel 2 and Basket 2.
- Wrap 2 in (5.1 cm) of each strap end around one end of Dowel 1 and sew it down. Keep the strap untwisted.
- Wrap 2 in (5.1 cm) of the top of each connector cord around Dowel 1, right next to the strap loop. Wrap 2 in (5.1 cm) of the bottom around the matching end of Dowel 2. Sew each loop.
Stitch-to-stitch logic: 2 in (5.1 cm) is 7 sts at 3.5 sts per inch. Fold the last 7 sts over the next 7 sts and sew through each matching pair, from st 1 with st 1 to st 7 with st 7.
Tension: Pull the whipstitches snug but do not cinch them. Each loop should still turn on its dowel so the basket hangs level.
Size checkpoint: Each cord should have 8 in (20.3 cm) free, which is 6 in (15.2 cm) of basket plus a 2 in (5.1 cm) gap. The strap has 20 in (50.8 cm) free and rises about 7 in (17.8 cm) above Dowel 1. The total is about 21 in (53.3 cm).
Border
Work the border on each basket right after Rnd 24, before you assemble the organizer.
Border gauge: 1 rev sc per st, so 3.5 sts per inch, the same as the rim.
Rnd 25: Ch 1, rev sc in each st: 40 front, 20 end, 40 back, 20 end. Join, then fasten off and weave in the ends. (120 sts)
Why the math works: 120 = 40 + 20 + 40 + 20, and it is also 15 fan repeats x 8 sts. Each 40-st long side holds exactly 5 fans. The border adds and removes no stitches, so the rim keeps the 13 in x 5 in (33.0 cm x 12.7 cm) outline of the base. The border is worked on one basket at a time, so there are no seam stitches to count.
Final Blocking
- Soak both baskets in cool water for 10 minutes, then press out the water in a towel. Do not wring.
- Optional: dip them in diluted fabric stiffener.
- Fit each basket over a box about 13 in x 5 in x 6 in (33.0 cm x 12.7 cm x 15.2 cm).
- Open every fan with your fingers so the spokes spread evenly.
- Check that the base is flat and the fold line is crisp.
- Let them dry for 24 to 48 hours, then assemble.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Base measures 13 in x 5 in (33.0 cm x 12.7 cm) and lies flat
- 15 fans on every fan round
- 120 sts on Rnds 20, 21, 23, 24, and 25
- 5 fans showing on each long side
- Slots centered on the short ends and matching each other
- Walls 6 in (15.2 cm) tall on both baskets
- Dowels sticking out 1.5 in (3.8 cm) at each side
- Baskets hang level with a 2 in (5.1 cm) gap
- Ends woven in at least 2 in (5.1 cm)
Troubleshooting
Walls flare: your fans are loose. Use a 4.5 mm hook for Rnds 14–19.
Walls pull in: your arch chains are tight. Work them more loosely, but still put 3 sc in each sp on Rnd 20.
Count is off on Rnd 20: each 8-st repeat should be 1 sc, 3 sc, 1 sc, 3 sc.
Dowel is too thick for the slots: on Rnd 22, work sc in next 7, ch 5, sk 5, sc in next 8 on each end. On Rnd 23, work 5 sc in each sp. That still gives 110 + 10 = 120 sts.
Basket tilts: the cord loops are uneven. Resew both at exactly 2 in (5.1 cm).
Care
Remove the dowels, then hand wash the baskets in cool water with mild soap and reshape them. Dry them over a box, not in the machine.

Final Notes
Each measurement leads to the next. A gauge of 14 sc per 4 in (10.2 cm) gives a 116-st base of 13 in x 5 in (33.0 cm x 12.7 cm). The walls change to 120 sts for 15 fan repeats. The rim keeps 120 sts, split 40/20/40/20, through the slots and the border, for 6 in (15.2 cm) walls. Then 2 in (5.1 cm) loops, 8 in (20.3 cm) of free cord, and a 24 in (61.0 cm) strap give a hanging height of 21 in (53.3 cm). Check each stage and the organizer will hang straight and hold its shape.
Happy crocheting!
