The Evergreen Leaf Car Seat Organizer is a practical project with a tailored look. Deep teal leaf columns run up the main panel, and a crisp beige border frames the edge. Two beige pockets with teal trim sit side by side across the lower half. They hold a phone, a wallet, pens, sunglasses or a small notebook.
The design pairs two colors: a dark evergreen teal for the panel and straps, and a warm oatmeal beige for the pockets and border. The leaf texture comes from simple dc fans stacked over single crochet rows. It reads as lace, but the fabric stays firm enough to carry everyday items.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The finished organizer measures 14¾ in wide x 17 in tall (37.5 x 43.2 cm), not counting the straps.
Construction is straightforward. You work the panel flat in rows, make two pockets flat in rows and trim each one in teal, then crochet two straps. Next you sew the pockets to the front of the panel and the straps to the back, and finish with a two-round beige border around the panel.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: 14¾ in wide x 17 in tall (37.5 x 43.2 cm), excluding straps
- Skill level: Intermediate (easy lace, careful counting, seaming)
- Terminology: US crochet terms
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton or cotton blend
- Hook: 4.5 mm (US 7)
- Number of pieces: 5 (1 panel, 2 pockets, 2 straps)
- Layout: two pockets side by side on the lower panel; two straps on the back of the top edge
- Panel size before border: 13¾ x 16 in (34.9 x 40.6 cm)
- Pocket size: 6¼ x 6¾ in (15.9 x 17.1 cm) after teal trim
- Strap size: 1¼ x 10 in (3.2 x 25.4 cm)
- Border depth: ½ in (1.3 cm), 2 rounds
Materials
Pick a smooth worsted cotton or cotton blend. Cotton holds its shape when the pockets are full and doesn’t fuzz from daily handling. Don’t use very stretchy acrylic, which can sag under the weight of a phone.
- Color A, Deep Teal: about 175 g / 305 m (panel, straps, pocket trim)
- Color B, Oatmeal Beige: about 90 g / 160 m (pockets, border)
These quantities include a margin of about 15% for your gauge swatch and tension differences.
Tools:
– 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
– Tapestry needle
– Locking stitch markers (at least 10)
– Rust-proof pins
– Measuring tape
– Spray bottle and a blocking mat or folded towel
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
- sk: skip
- st(s): stitch(es)
- sp: space
- sl st: slip stitch
- RS / WS: right side / wrong side
- rep: repeat
Special stitch: Fan. Work (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) all in the same stitch. A fan counts as 5 stitches: 3 dc and 2 ch-1 spaces. In every lace row, each fan has 2 skipped stitches on each side, so it uses 5 stitches and makes 5. That keeps the count steady from row to row.
Gauge and Checkpoints
- Solid sc: 16 sts and 18 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm)
- Leaf pattern: 16 sts = 4 in (10.2 cm), and 8 rows (4 two-row repeats) = 3 in (7.6 cm). One lace row is about ½ in (1.3 cm) tall and one sc row is about ¼ in (0.6 cm).
Test one piece first. Make one pocket before you start the panel, because it uses both the solid sc and the leaf pattern. Check it at these points:
- After Row 18: 5¾ in wide x 4 in tall (14.6 x 10.2 cm)
- After Row 24: 5¾ in wide x 6¼ in tall (14.6 x 15.9 cm)
- After the trim: 6¼ x 6¾ in (15.9 x 17.1 cm)
If your piece is too big, go down half a hook size. If it’s too small, go up half a hook size. If only the height is off, work the dc a little taller or shorter. Don’t change any stitch counts, because the border and seaming math depends on them.

Panel (Color A, Teal)
The panel is worked flat in rows. Even rows are lace (RS) and odd rows are sc (WS). The ch-3 at the start of each lace row counts as a dc.
Row 1 (WS): Ch 56. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (55 sc)
Row 2 (RS, lace): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the next 4 sts. Sk 2 sts, fan in the next st, sk 2 sts, dc in the next 5 sts; rep from * 4 more times. Turn. (55 sts: 30 dc in solid columns + 5 fans of 5 sts)*
Row 3 (WS): Ch 1. Sc in each dc and in each ch-1 sp across, and sc in the top of the turning ch-3. Turn. (55 sc)
The fan’s center dc always sits on the 8th stitch of each 10-stitch repeat. Because of that, each new fan lands directly above the center of the fan below it, and the fans stack into upright leaf columns. The skipped stitches leave the small open “veins” between the leaves.
Rows 4–43: Rep Rows 2–3 twenty more times. Don’t fasten off. Place a marker in the last loop for later.
Panel totals: 43 rows (21 lace rows + 22 sc rows), 55 sts per row.
Panel checkpoints:
– After Row 1: 13¾ in (34.9 cm) wide
– After Row 9: 3¼ in (8.3 cm) tall
– After Row 23: 8½ in (21.6 cm) tall
– After Row 43: 16 in (40.6 cm) tall (Row 1 at ¼ in plus 21 repeats at ¾ in each)
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Pockets (Color B, Beige, with Color A Trim)
Pocket Body
Row 1 (RS): With B, ch 24. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (23 sc)
Rows 2–18: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (23 sc)
Row 19 (lace): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the next st. Sk 2 sts, fan in the next st, sk 2 sts, dc in the next 2 sts; rep from * 2 more times. Turn. (23 sts: 2 + 3 x 7)*
Row 20: Ch 1, sc in each dc and each ch-1 sp across, and sc in the top of the turning ch. Turn. (23 sc)
Rows 21–24: Rep Rows 19–20 twice. Fasten off B.
This makes three leaf columns across the top band. The pocket now measures 5¾ x 6¼ in (14.6 x 15.9 cm).
Teal Trim Round (Conversion Round)
The teal trim runs all the way around the pocket. In each corner stitch, work 3 sc. The middle sc of each group is the corner stitch.
With RS facing, join A in the first st of Row 24.
- Top: 3 sc in the first st, sc in the next 21 sts, 3 sc in the last st.
- Side 1: Work 23 sc evenly down the row ends, skipping the row ends of Rows 24 and 1. The corner groups already cover those two rows. Along the lace band (Rows 23–19), work 2 sc in each lace row end and 1 sc in each sc row end, for 8 sc. Along Rows 18–2, work 15 sc spaced evenly over the 17 row ends.
- Bottom: Work along the foundation chain: 3 sc in the first ch, sc in the next 21 ch, 3 sc in the last ch.
- Side 2: Work 23 sc evenly, matching Side 1.
Join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and leave a 36 in (91.4 cm) tail for sewing.
Count: 92 sts worked one per existing stitch or row end (23 + 23 + 23 + 23), plus 8 extra stitches from the corner increases, for 100 sc.
Per side, corner to corner inclusive: 25 sts on the top and bottom, 27 sts on each side. Check: 25 + 25 + 27 + 27 − 4 shared corners = 100.
At 4 sts per inch, the trimmed pocket measures 6¼ x 6¾ in (15.9 x 17.1 cm).
Straps (Color A, Teal)
Row 1: Ch 6. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (5 sc)
Rows 2–45: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (5 sc)
Fasten off and leave a 24 in (61.0 cm) tail. Each strap is 1¼ x 10 in (3.2 x 25.4 cm).
Make All Pieces
| Piece | Quantity | Color |
|---|---|---|
| Panel | 1 | A (teal) |
| 2 | B (beige), trimmed in A | |
| Strap | 2 | A (teal) |
Layout, front view (stitch columns of the 55-st panel):
[Strap sts 10-14] [Strap sts 42-46] <- on WS, top edge
+-------------------------------------------------+
| leaf leaf leaf leaf leaf (teal panel) |
| |
| margin | POCKET 1 (25) | gap | POCKET 2 (25) | margin |
| 1.5 | | 2 | | 1.5 |
| |
+-------------------------------------------------+
The widths add up: 1.5 + 25 + 2 + 25 + 1.5 = 55 sts, which is the full panel width.
Joining
Pockets to Panel
Lay the panel RS up. Pin each pocket so its bottom edge sits along Row 3, about ¾ in (1.9 cm) above the foundation.
- Left pocket: outer edge ⅜ in (1.0 cm) in from the left panel edge
- Right pocket: outer edge ⅜ in (1.0 cm) in from the right panel edge
- Gap between pockets: ½ in (1.3 cm)
The pocket tops land about 7½ in (19.1 cm) above the foundation.
Use the teal tail and a tapestry needle. Whipstitch through the back loop of each trim stitch and into the panel. Sew the bottom and both sides, and leave the top open.
Stitch-to-stitch logic:
– Bottom: the 25 pocket stitches meet 25 panel stitches in Row 3, one to one.
– Sides: the 27 pocket stitches climb the panel at 2 stitches per lace row and 1 per sc row. That is 3 stitches per ¾ in, or 4 per inch, which matches the pocket’s own side gauge.
Tension: Snug each stitch until the trim lies flat. Don’t pull until the panel puckers. Work 2 extra stitches at each top corner to reinforce it, since these corners take the most strain.
Straps to Panel
Turn the panel WS up.
- Left strap: sts 10–14 of Row 43
- Right strap: sts 42–46 of Row 43
That puts the strap centers 2⅞ in (7.3 cm) in from each side edge and 8 in (20.3 cm) apart, which fits most headrest posts.
Sew one end of each strap so it overlaps 1½ in (3.8 cm) down the WS. Fold the strap into a loop and sew the other end over the first, using the same 1½ in (3.8 cm) overlap. Sew around all edges of the overlap. Each loop stands about 3½ in (8.9 cm) above the panel.
Size checkpoint: The panel should still measure 13¾ x 16 in (34.9 x 40.6 cm) and lie flat with no ripples around the pockets.
Border (Color B, Beige)
Border gauge: sc worked in rounds, 4 sts = 1 in (2.5 cm). Two rounds add about ¼ in (0.6 cm) on each side, so the border is ½ in (1.3 cm) deep in total.
Work 3 sc in each corner stitch. The middle sc of each group is the new corner. Work the top edge through the panel only, so the straps rise from behind the border.
Round 1
With RS facing, join B in the first st of Row 43.
- Top: 3 sc in the first st, sc in the next 53 sts, 3 sc in the last st.
- Left side: work 62 sc down the row ends, skipping Rows 43 and 1 because the corner groups cover them. Work 2 sc in each lace row end (21 x 2 = 42) and 1 sc in each sc row end for Rows 3–41 (20 sc).
- Bottom: work along the foundation chain: 3 sc in the first ch, sc in the next 53 ch, 3 sc in the last ch.
- Right side: work 62 sc, matching the left side.
Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Count: 234 sts worked one per existing stitch or row end (55 + 55 + 62 + 62), plus 8 extra from the corners, for 242 sc.
Per side, inclusive: 57 sts on the top and bottom, 66 sts on each side. Check: 57 + 57 + 66 + 66 − 4 = 242.
Round 2
Ch 1. Sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in each corner sc. Join with a sl st.
Count: 242 sts worked one per existing stitch, plus 8 extra from the corners, for 250 sc.
Per side, inclusive: 59 sts on the top and bottom, 68 sts on each side. Check: 59 + 59 + 68 + 68 − 4 = 250.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Why the Math Works
The panel’s 55 stitches equal 13¾ in at 4 sts per inch. On the sides, the 64 row ends span 16 in. One lace row at ½ in gets 2 sc and one sc row at ¼ in gets 1 sc, so the sides also fill at exactly 4 sts per inch.
The two skipped end rows equal the 2 corner stitches, so nothing is counted twice. After Round 2:
– Top: 59 sts ÷ 4 = 14¾ in (37.5 cm)
– Sides: 68 sts ÷ 4 = 17 in (43.2 cm)
Those are the finished measurements.
Final Blocking
- Lay the organizer RS up on a blocking mat or folded towel.
- Mist the whole piece evenly with water until it is damp, not soaked.
- Pin the corners to 14¾ x 17 in (37.5 x 43.2 cm).
- Pin along each side about every 2 in (5.1 cm) so the edges stay straight.
- Gently open the lace fans with your fingertips so each leaf column runs straight and vertical.
- Pat the pockets flat and pin their top corners so the openings don’t curl.
- Let it dry completely, about 24 hours, before you unpin it.
- Lay the straps flat beside the panel to dry. Don’t stretch them.

Troubleshooting
Leaf columns drift sideways. A fan is landing on the wrong stitch. Count 5 solid dc, skip 2, and work the fan in the next stitch. Each fan should sit over the previous fan’s center dc.
Stitch count grows in lace rows. You worked a dc into the stitch you should have skipped. Make sure each fan has exactly 2 skipped stitches on each side.
Border ruffles. You worked too many row-end stitches. Recheck 2 sc per lace row and 1 per sc row, with 62 per side.
Border cups or pulls in. You worked too few row-end stitches, or your tension is tight. Check the count, or go up half a hook size for the border only.
Pocket bags away from the panel. The side seams are too loose. Re-sew at 3 stitches per ¾ in (1.9 cm).
Panel sags under weight. The fabric is too loose. Remake it with a smaller hook, or hold a firmer cotton.
Care
Remove the organizer from the seat and hand wash it in cool water with mild soap. Press out the water in a towel and dry it flat, pinned to size if needed.

Final Notes
The measurements build on each other:
– Gauge: 16 sts = 4 in (10.2 cm)
– Panel: 55 sts and 43 rows, 13¾ x 16 in (34.9 x 40.6 cm)
– Pockets: 23 sts and 24 rows, 5¾ x 6¼ in (14.6 x 15.9 cm), trimmed to 100 sts and 6¼ x 6¾ in (15.9 x 17.1 cm)
– Straps: 5 sts x 45 rows, 1¼ x 10 in (3.2 x 25.4 cm)
– Border: 242 sts, then 250 sts, for a finished size of 14¾ x 17 in (37.5 x 43.2 cm)
If every checkpoint matches, the organizer will hang flat and square on the seat. Happy crocheting!
