This sunflower hangs on the wall and holds your phone while it charges. A round chocolate-brown center is framed by sixteen pointed golden-yellow petals. A deep brown pocket sits across the lower half of the center, and a sage-green stem with two leaves hangs below it. A green loop at the top hangs over a wall peg or hook.
The colors are classic sunflower: dark brown, warm mustard yellow, and soft sage green. Each petal has a raised single-crochet outline and a sharp tip. The pocket is a shallow half-bowl with a firm rim, so the phone stands upright and the cable runs out underneath.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. The flower is 11.7 in (29.7 cm) across. The whole hanging is about 20.7 in (52.6 cm) long, from the top of the loop to the end of the stem.
You’ll crochet six pieces: the flower (brown center with yellow petals worked straight onto it), the pocket, the stem, the hanging loop, and two leaves. The pocket is sewn one stitch to one stitch onto a round of front loops that you leave free on purpose.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size: flower 11.7 in (29.7 cm) across; total length 20.7 in (52.6 cm)
- Skill level: Easy+
- Terminology: US
- Yarn weight: Bulky (#5) cotton or cotton blend
- Hook: 6 mm (J-10)
- Number of pieces: 6 (flower, pocket, stem, loop, 2 leaves)
- Layout: loop at the top, then the flower with the pocket on the lower half of the center, then the stem with a leaf on each side
- Brown center: 7.6 in (19.3 cm) across
- Flower before border: 11.2 in (28.4 cm) across
- Border depth: 0.25 in (0.6 cm)
- Pocket: 6.8 in (17.3 cm) wide, 4 in (10.2 cm) tall, 1 in (2.5 cm) deep
Materials
Use a smooth bulky cotton or cotton blend. Cotton holds its shape on the wall and won’t stretch under the weight of a phone. Acrylic works too, but the pocket may sag a little over time.
- Brown (A): 55 g, about 70 m. Used for the center and pocket.
- Mustard yellow (B): 35 g, about 45 m. Used for the petal base, petals, and border.
- Sage green (C): 15 g, about 19 m. Used for the stem, loop, and leaves.
All amounts include about a 30% margin for your gauge check and for weaving in ends.
Tools:
– 6 mm (J-10) hook
– Tapestry needle
– 4 stitch markers
– Scissors and a measuring tape
– Rustproof pins
– Optional: a 7 in (17.8 cm) circle of stiff felt for the back
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
- sc2tog: single crochet 2 together
- BLO: back loop only
- MR: magic ring
- st(s): stitch(es)
- RS / WS: right side / wrong side
Row-end sc: insert the hook under the outer strands at the end of a row and work a sc there. Work one row-end sc per sc row.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 12 sc and 13 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) with the 6 mm hook.
Use the brown center as your test piece. If it hits these checkpoints, everything else will fit. Measure flat, without stretching.
- After Round 6: 3.8 in (9.7 cm)
- After Round 11: 7 in (17.8 cm)
- After Round 12: 7.6 in (19.3 cm)
- After Round 13: 8.2 in (20.8 cm)
- One petal: 2 in (5.1 cm) wide and 1.5 in (3.8 cm) tall
Too big (more than 0.3 in / 0.8 cm over at Round 11): go down 0.5 mm in hook size and start again. Too small: go up 0.5 mm. If the center cups, your tension is too tight. If it ruffles, it’s too loose. Change the hook, not the stitch counts. The pocket needs exactly 66 stitches in Round 11.

Flower Center (Brown, A)
Work in joined rounds with the RS facing. The ch 1 at the start of each round doesn’t count as a stitch. Join each round with a sl st to the first sc. Stagger the increases from round to round so the circle stays round.
Round 1: MR, 6 sc in ring, join. (6)
Round 2: Ch 1, inc in each st, join. (12)
Round 3: Ch 1, (sc 1, inc) 6 times, join. (18)
Round 4: Ch 1, (sc 2, inc) 6 times, join. (24)
Round 5: Ch 1, (sc 3, inc) 6 times, join. (30)
Round 6: Ch 1, (sc 4, inc) 6 times, join. (36). Checkpoint: 3.8 in (9.7 cm).
Round 7: Ch 1, (sc 5, inc) 6 times, join. (42)
Round 8: Ch 1, (sc 6, inc) 6 times, join. (48)
Round 9: Ch 1, (sc 7, inc) 6 times, join. (54)
Round 10: Ch 1, (sc 8, inc) 6 times, join. (60)
Round 11: Ch 1, (sc 9, inc) 6 times, join. (66). Checkpoint: 7 in (17.8 cm).
Round 12 (BLO): Ch 1, working in BLO, (sc 10, inc) 6 times, join. (72). Fasten off A.
Round 12 leaves the 66 front loops of Round 11 free on the RS. You’ll sew the pocket to these later. Checkpoint: 7.6 in (19.3 cm).
Petals (Yellow, B)
Round 13 (conversion round): Join B in any st. Ch 1, (sc 8, inc) 8 times, join. That’s 72 sts worked one per stitch + 8 added = 80 sts. Checkpoint: 8.2 in (20.8 cm).
The 80 stitches form 16 groups of 5. Each petal uses 4 base stitches, and the 5th stitch is a valley stitch between petals: 16 × 5 = 80.
The petals are short turned rows worked straight off Round 13. The ch 1 at the start of each row doesn’t count.
Petal Row 1 (RS): Sl st in the next st, ch 1, inc in the same st, sc in the next 2 sts, inc in the next st, turn. (6)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc across, turn. (6)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc 2, sc2tog, turn. (4)
Row 4: Ch 1, sc2tog twice, turn. (2)
Row 5: Ch 1, sc2tog. (1)
You’re now at the tip, on the left side. Work 4 sl sts down the left edge, one in the row-end of each of Rows 4, 3, 2, and 1. Then sl st in the valley stitch.
Petals 2–16: Ch 1, inc in the next st, sc in the next 2 sts, inc in the next st, turn. Finish Rows 2–5 and the sl st edge the same way as Petal 1.
Petal 16’s valley stitch is the last stitch of Round 13. Don’t fasten off. Checkpoint: 11.2 in (28.4 cm) from tip to opposite tip.
Border (Petal Outline, B)
Border gauge: 3 sc per inch (2.5 cm) along the edges, one sc per row-end.
Border Round: With the RS facing, work around each petal:
– 5 sc up the right edge, one in each row-end of Rows 1–5
– (sc, ch 2, sc) in the top of Row 5
– 5 sc down the left edge, working through the sl sts
– sl st in the valley stitch
Per petal: 5 + 2 + 5 = 12 sc, plus 1 ch-2 tip and 1 sl st.
Round total: 16 × 12 = 192 sc, plus 16 ch-2 tips and 16 sl sts. Join and fasten off.
Why the math works: At this gauge an sc row is almost as tall as an sc is wide (13 rows to 12 sts per 4 in). So one sc per row-end lies flat. The extra sc and the ch-2 let the edge turn the point without pulling. The sl st in each valley keeps the petals separate. The border adds 0.25 in (0.6 cm) all around, which brings the flower from 11.2 in (28.4 cm) to 11.7 in (29.7 cm).
Pocket (Brown, A)
The pocket is a half-circle worked in turned rows, with three plain rows at the end that form a curved wall. The ch 1 at the start of each row doesn’t count.
Row 1: MR, ch 1, 3 sc in ring, turn. Pull the ring closed. (3)
Row 2: Ch 1, inc in each st, turn. (6)
Row 3: Ch 1, (sc 1, inc) 3 times, turn. (9)
Row 4: Ch 1, (sc 2, inc) 3 times, turn. (12)
Rows 5–11: Keep adding 1 sc before each inc, so each row grows by 3 sts. The counts are Row 5: 15, Row 6: 18, Row 7: 21, Row 8: 24, Row 9: 27, Row 10: 30, Row 11: 33.
Checkpoint: 6.8 in (17.3 cm) across the straight edge and 3.4 in (8.6 cm) tall.
Rows 12–14 (wall): Ch 1, sc across, turn. (33). With no increases, the curved edge turns up into a wall about 1 in (2.5 cm) deep.
Rim Row 1: Turn to work along the straight edge. Work 12 sc evenly across the 14 row-ends of the first half, 1 sc in the ring center, and 12 sc evenly across the 14 row-ends of the second half. Turn. 12 + 1 + 12 = 25 sts.
Rim Row 2: Ch 1, sc across. (25)
Fasten off and leave a 30 in (76.2 cm) tail. The rim is about 8.3 in (21.1 cm) long and covers the opening and the tops of both walls.
Stem, Loop, and Leaves (Green, C)
Stem: Ch 22. Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across, turn. (21). Row 2: ch 1, sc across. (21). Fasten off with a long tail. The stem is 7 in (17.8 cm) long and 0.6 in (1.5 cm) wide.
Hanging loop: Ch 25. Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across, turn. (24). Row 2: ch 1, sc across. (24). Fasten off with a long tail. The strip is 8 in (20.3 cm) long.
Leaf (make 2): Ch 9.
Round 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, hdc, dc in the next 3 chs, hdc, sc, then 3 sc in the last ch. Working along the other side of the chain: sc, hdc, dc in the next 3 chs, hdc, sc in the last ch. Join. 7 + 3 + 7 = 17 sts.
Round 2 (outline): Ch 1, sc in the first 8 sts, (sc, ch 2, sc) in the center st of the 3-sc group, sc in the last 8 sts, join. That’s 18 sc and 1 ch-2 tip. Fasten off.
Each leaf is 3.25 in (8.3 cm) by 1.75 in (4.4 cm).

Joining
Sew everything with whipstitch, using the matching tails. Pull each stitch just snug enough to close the gap. The fabric should stay flat and not pucker.
1. Pocket. Turn the flower so a valley points straight down. Mark the far left and far right front loops of Round 11, so the markers are 33 loops apart along the bottom. Place the pocket rim-up and line up its last wall row (33 sts) with those 33 lower front loops. Sew them one to one: 33 to 33, with no ease needed.
2. Rim ends. Tack both rim ends to the center at the markers. Leave the rest of the rim free to make the opening.
3. Stem. Sew the top 1 in (2.5 cm) of the stem to the back of Rounds 12–13 at the bottom center. That leaves 6 in (15.2 cm) hanging below.
4. Leaves. Sew one leaf base to each side of the stem, 2 in (5.1 cm) below the flower, angled slightly upward.
5. Loop. Fold the strip in half. Sew both ends to the back of the top center with a 1 in (2.5 cm) overlap, which leaves 3 in (7.6 cm) of loop showing.
Size checkpoint: 3 in (7.6 cm) + 11.7 in (29.7 cm) + 6 in (15.2 cm) = 20.7 in (52.6 cm).
If you’re using felt, sew it to the back now, just inside Round 13.
Final Blocking
- Mist the piece until it’s damp.
- Lay it face up on a blocking mat.
- Pin the center into a 7.6 in (19.3 cm) circle.
- Pin each petal tip at its ch-2 so the flower measures 11.7 in (29.7 cm) across.
- Fill the pocket loosely with a folded cloth so it keeps its 1 in (2.5 cm) depth.
- Pin the leaves flat and the stem straight.
- Let it dry completely before you take out the pins.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Round 12 has 72 sts and lies flat
- Round 13 has 80 sts, with 16 evenly spaced petals
- Each petal widens to 6 sts and has a sharp ch-2 tip
- The border has 12 sc per petal and a clean valley sl st
- The pocket is sewn 33 to 33 with no gaps
- The rim is level and both ends are secure
- The stem, leaves, and loop are firmly attached
- All ends are woven in on the WS
Troubleshooting
- Center cups: Go up a hook size.
- Center ruffles: Recount each round, or go down a hook size.
- Petals lean: Make sure you sl st down the left edge every time.
- Border waves: You’ve worked extra sc. Keep it to exactly 5 per side.
- Pocket too shallow: Add a 4th wall row of 33 sc.
- Hanging tilts: Re-center the loop over the top petal.
Care
Spot clean with mild soap and cool water. Reshape it and dry it flat, and keep it out of the dryer.

Final Notes
These are the numbers to check as you go:
- Round 11: 66 sts, 7 in (17.8 cm)
- Round 12: 72 sts, 7.6 in (19.3 cm)
- Round 13: 80 sts, 8.2 in (20.8 cm), enough for 16 petals
- Before the border: 11.2 in (28.4 cm)
- After the border: 11.7 in (29.7 cm)
- Pocket: 33 wall stitches sewn to 33 front loops
- Total length: 20.7 in (52.6 cm)
Happy crocheting!
