This hanging organizer holds three standard toilet paper rolls in three small, open baskets stacked one above the other. Each basket has a rust base and rim, a warm beige wall, and a band of charcoal “bloom” motifs worked in tapestry crochet. Rust straps link the baskets, and a looped hanger strap wraps around a wooden ring so the whole piece hangs from a single hook.
The palette is rust, beige, and charcoal: earthy and a little rustic, so it suits a neutral bathroom. Single crochet keeps the fabric dense, so the baskets stand up on their own and keep their shape when loaded.
The pattern uses US crochet terms. Each basket measures about 6.2 in (15.7 cm) across the top, 4.8 in (12.2 cm) across the base, and 4 in (10.2 cm) tall. The assembled holder hangs about 21 in (53.3 cm) from the top of the ring to the bottom of the lowest basket.
Construction is simple. You crochet each basket in joined rounds, starting with a flat circular base, then turning up the wall with a back-loop round, working the colorwork band, and finishing with a rust rim. Next you make two kinds of flat single crochet straps. Finally, you sew everything together and slip the hanger strap around the ring.
Finished Size and Construction
- Finished size (assembled): about 6.2 in (15.7 cm) wide x 21 in (53.3 cm) long, ring included
- Skill level: Intermediate (tapestry crochet, joined rounds)
- Terminology: US
- Yarn weight: Worsted (#4) cotton or cotton blend
- Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8)
- Number of pieces: 9 crocheted pieces (3 baskets, 1 hanger strap, 4 connector straps), plus 1 wooden ring
- Layout: 1 column x 3 baskets, stacked vertically
- Basket size: 4.8 in (12.2 cm) base, 6.2 in (15.7 cm) top, 4 in (10.2 cm) tall
- Basket size before rim border: 3.25 in (8.3 cm) tall wall, 78 sts around
- Rim border depth: 3 rounds, 0.75 in (1.9 cm)
Materials
Pick a smooth, firm cotton. It holds structure, it doesn’t stretch out under the weight of the rolls, and it can handle a humid bathroom. Acrylic works too, but the baskets will be softer.
- Rust (Color A): 70 g, about 109 m (119 yd)
- Beige (Color B): 55 g, about 86 m (94 yd)
- Charcoal (Color C): 30 g, about 47 m (51 yd)
Tools:
- 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
- Wooden or metal ring, 2.75 in (7.0 cm) diameter
- Tapestry needle
- 8 locking stitch markers
- Scissors and measuring tape
- Spray bottle and a towel for blocking
Quantities include a margin of roughly 25-30% for gauge differences, carried strands, and sewing tails.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- inc – 2 sc in the same stitch
- sl st – slip stitch
- BLO – back loop only
- MR – magic ring
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rnd(s) – round(s)
- rev sc – reverse single crochet (crab stitch)
Reverse single crochet: Working from left to right (right-handed), insert the hook into the next stitch to the right, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through both loops. This makes the rolled, corded edge you see on each rim.
Tapestry color change: Work the last sc before a color change until 2 loops remain on the hook, then finish it with the new color. Lay the unused color across the tops of the stitches and work over it so it is hidden inside the fabric.
Joined rounds: Each round ends with a sl st into the first sc. The ch 1 at the start of a round does not count as a stitch.
Gauge and Checkpoints
Gauge: 16 sc x 16 rnds = 4 in (10.2 cm) in single crochet worked in the round.
Make one complete basket before starting the others. It is your real gauge swatch, and it should hold a roll before you commit to two more.
- After Rnd 5: 30 sts; base measures 2.4 in (6.1 cm) across.
- After Rnd 10: 60 sts; base measures 4.8 in (12.2 cm) across, 15 in (38.1 cm) around.
- After Rnd 23: 78 sts; wall measures 3.25 in (8.3 cm) tall above the BLO ridge.
- After Rnd 26: wall measures 4 in (10.2 cm); top measures 6.2 in (15.7 cm) across, 19.5 in (49.5 cm) around.
If the base is too big, or the roll falls through loosely, go down to a 4.5 mm hook. If it is too small, or a roll will not sit flat inside, go up to a 5.5 mm hook. Tapestry rounds often tighten up. If the colorwork band pulls in, go up half a hook size for Rnds 16-21 only.

Basket (Make 3)
Base
Use Color A.
Rnd 1: In a MR, ch 1, 6 sc, sl st to first sc. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, inc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (12 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc 1, inc 6 times, sl st to first sc. (18 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc 2, inc 6 times, sl st to first sc. (24 sts)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc 3, inc 6 times, sl st to first sc. (30 sts)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc 4, inc 6 times, sl st to first sc. (36 sts)
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc 5, inc 6 times, sl st to first sc. (42 sts)
Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc 6, inc 6 times, sl st to first sc. (48 sts)
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc 7, inc 6 times, sl st to first sc. (54 sts)
Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc 8, inc 6 times, sl st to first sc. (60 sts)
Check: 4.8 in (12.2 cm) across, lying flat with no cupping or ruffling.
Lower Wall and Rust Band
Rnd 11: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around, sl st to first sc. (60 sts) This ridge turns the wall upward.
Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (60 sts)
Rnd 13: Ch 1, sc 9, inc 6 times, sl st to first sc. (66 sts) Change to Color B on the final sl st.
Rnds 11-13 form the rust band at the bottom of the basket and start the gentle flare.
Beige Wall and Bloom Band
Rnd 14 (B): Ch 1, sc 10, inc 6 times, sl st to first sc. (72 sts)
Rnd 15 (B): Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (72 sts)
Join Color C and carry it inside Rnds 16-21. The bloom motif is 12 sts wide and 6 rnds tall, repeated 6 times around (6 x 12 = 72). Each motif is five 2 x 2 blocks arranged in a plus shape: a top block, three blocks side by side in the middle, and a bottom block.
Rnds 16-17 (top block): Ch 1, B 5, C 2, B 5 6 times, sl st to first sc. (72 sts)
Rnds 18-19 (middle row): Ch 1, B 2, C 2, B 1, C 2, B 1, C 2, B 2 6 times, sl st to first sc. (72 sts)
Rnds 20-21 (bottom block): Ch 1, B 5, C 2, B 5 6 times, sl st to first sc. (72 sts)
Check the counts: 5 + 2 + 5 = 12, and 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 2 = 12. The center C pair in the middle rows lands on sts 6-7 of each repeat, the same as the top and bottom blocks, so each plus stays centered. Fasten off Color C after Rnd 21 and weave in the tail later.
Rnd 22 (B): Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (72 sts)
Rnd 23 (B): Ch 1, sc 11, inc 6 times, sl st to first sc. (78 sts) Change to Color A on the final sl st.
Check: 78 sts, and the wall is 3.25 in (8.3 cm) tall above the BLO ridge. The rim is worked in the Rim Border section below.
Straps
Hanger Strap (Make 1)
Use Color A.
Row 1: Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (4 sts)
Rows 2-48: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (4 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail. The strap measures 1 in (2.5 cm) wide x 12 in (30.5 cm) long.
Connector Straps (Make 4)
Use Color A.
Row 1: Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (4 sts)
Rows 2-12: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (4 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a 12 in (30.5 cm) tail. Each strap measures 1 in (2.5 cm) x 3 in (7.6 cm).

Joining
Prepare the baskets. Flatten each finished basket so one bloom motif is centered on the front. Mark the 4 rim stitches at each side fold. Then count: there should be 35 unmarked sts on the front half and 35 on the back half (35 + 4 + 35 + 4 = 78). On Basket 1 and Basket 2, put matching markers on the outside of Rnds 11-13 straight below the rim markers. Line them up by eye, since the bottom band has fewer stitches.
Method: Whipstitch with Color A from the outside, sewing stitch-to-stitch. Each strap end is 4 sts wide, so its 4 end stitches line up with the 4 marked basket stitches. The strap’s side edges are sewn down along 3 rounds of the basket.
Connector straps: For each gap, lay the top 3 rows of a connector over the marked bottom band (Rnds 11-13) of the upper basket and sew all four edges. Lay the bottom 3 rows over the marked rim (Rnds 24-26) of the lower basket and sew the same way. The overlap is 0.75 in (1.9 cm) at each end, which leaves 6 rows, or 1.5 in (3.8 cm), of strap showing between baskets. Join Basket 1 to Basket 2 and Basket 2 to Basket 3, with two connectors in each gap.
Hanger strap: Pass the strap through the ring and center it so 4 rows sit on each side of the ring’s top. Fold it, then whipstitch the two layers together across all 4 sts just below the ring to close the loop. That uses 8 rows, or 2 in (5.1 cm), leaving each leg 5 in (12.7 cm) long. Sew the last 3 rows of each leg over the marked rim of Basket 1, one leg per side.
Tension: Sew firmly, but don’t let the basket fabric pucker. Keep the strap flat and square to the rim. If the straps twist, the baskets will tilt when they are loaded.
Size checkpoint: Basket 2 + connector gap + Basket 3 = 4 + 1.5 + 4 = 9.5 in (24.1 cm). All three baskets and both gaps = 15 in (38.1 cm). With the hanger and ring, the total is about 21 in (53.3 cm).
Rim Border
Each basket’s rim is the border. Work it on all three baskets before joining.
Border gauge: 4 sts per in (2.5 cm), the same as the body. At 78 sts, the rim is 19.5 in (49.5 cm) around.
For counting, treat each rim as two halves of 39 sts, front and back. Each half includes one 4-st strap position.
Rnd 24 (A): Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (78 sts: 39 front + 39 back)
Rnd 25 (A): Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (78 sts: 39 front + 39 back)
Rnd 26 (A): Ch 1, rev sc in each st around, sl st to first st. (78 sts: 39 front + 39 back) Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Why the math works: Rnd 23 adds exactly 6 increases to the 72-st motif band (72 + 6 = 78), so the rim flares a little and nothing else changes. The border is worked 1 st into each st, so the circumference holds at 19.5 in (49.5 cm) with no ruffling or pulling in. Since 78 is even, the two strap points sit exactly opposite each other, with 39 sts per half.
Final Blocking
- Weave in all ends inside the basket walls, following the same color where you can.
- Lightly mist each basket with water until damp, not soaked.
- Slide a toilet roll wrapped in a plastic bag into each basket. Pack a rolled towel around it to fill out the flare.
- Shape the base flat and the rim round. Check that the top measures 6.2 in (15.7 cm) across.
- Lay the straps flat and pin them straight, 1 in (2.5 cm) wide.
- Let everything dry completely, then remove the forms.
- Hang the holder and check that the baskets sit level.
Final Quality-Control Checklist
- Each base is 4.8 in (12.2 cm) across and lies flat.
- Each basket has 78 sts at the rim and stands 4 in (10.2 cm) tall.
- 6 bloom motifs per basket, each centered, with no stray charcoal showing in the beige.
- The rust bands (Rnds 11-13 and 24-26) are even all the way around.
- The rev sc rim is rolled evenly with no gaps.
- Strap ends cover exactly 4 sts and 3 rnds at each attachment point.
- Gaps between baskets measure 1.5 in (3.8 cm).
- The total hanging length is about 21 in (53.3 cm), and the baskets hang straight.
Troubleshooting
- Base cups upward: Your stitches are too tight. Go up a hook size, or check that each round has 6 increases.
- Base ruffles: Recount; you may have added extra increases. Each round should grow by exactly 6.
- Carried charcoal shows through: Keep the carried strand flat along the stitch tops and pull it snug, but not tight. A darker beige also hides it better.
- Motifs drift sideways: Count each 12-st repeat in every round. Joined rounds keep the motifs stacked; spiral rounds will make them slant.
- Visible jog at the round join: Put the join at a side fold, where a strap will cover it.
- Baskets tilt when loaded: Re-sew the straps exactly opposite each other, 35 sts apart on each half.
- Rim flares too much: Work Rnd 26 with a hook one size smaller.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, reshape, and dry flat with a roll inside each basket. Do not tumble dry, since that can shrink the cotton and distort the motifs.

Final Notes
The measurement chain is short and easy to check. A 60-st base gives 4.8 in (12.2 cm) across. The wall grows to 66, then 72 sts for six 12-st bloom repeats, then 78 sts at a 6.2 in (15.7 cm) rim. Sixteen wall rounds give 4 in (10.2 cm) of height. Three-row overlaps leave 1.5 in (3.8 cm) gaps, and three baskets plus the hanger come to about 21 in (53.3 cm). Check each number as you go and the finished holder will hang straight and hold its rolls well.
Happy crocheting!
