Sunflower Lattice Bead Curtain Crochet Pattern

This bright hanging curtain is made of vertical crochet strands. Each strand stacks round flowers, on-point lattice diamonds and small striped beads, and ends in a blue tassel. Hung in a sunny window, the strands catch the light and sway gently.

The palette uses just two colors: buttery yellow and deep cobalt blue. Each flower has a blue center, twelve yellow petals and a crisp blue outline. Each diamond has an open blue lattice center inside a solid yellow frame. The striped beads tie the two colors together along the strand.

All instructions use US crochet terms. One strand measures 82 in (208.3 cm) from the top of the rod to the tip of the tassel, and the flowers are 4 in (10.2 cm) across. The curtain shown is two panels of 8 strands. Each panel covers 36 in (91.4 cm) of rod, so the pair covers 72 in (182.9 cm).

You crochet every piece separately: flowers in the round, diamonds as small granny squares turned on point, and beads as stuffed amigurumi balls. Then you thread everything onto a crocheted cord and tack it so the pieces sit edge to edge.

Finished Size and Construction

  • Finished strand length: 82 in (208.3 cm), including the 2 in (5.1 cm) hanging loop and the 3.5 in (8.9 cm) tassel
  • Panel width: 36 in (91.4 cm), with 8 strands at 4.5 in (11.4 cm) centers
  • Skill level: Intermediate (simple stitches, lots of repetition, careful assembly)
  • Terminology: US
  • Yarn weight: DK (#3) mercerized cotton
  • Hook: 3.5 mm (E-4)
  • Pieces per strand: 7 flowers, 7 diamonds, 15 beads, 1 tassel, 1 cord
  • Layout: loop, bead, then 7 repeats of [flower, bead, diamond, bead], then tassel
  • Piece sizes: flower 4 in (10.2 cm) across; diamond 3 in (7.6 cm) per side and about 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tip to tip; bead 1.25 in (3.2 cm)
  • Size before border: flower 3.75 in (9.5 cm); diamond 2.25 in (5.7 cm) per side
  • Border depth: flower 0.125 in (0.3 cm); diamond 0.375 in (1.0 cm) per side

Materials

Choose a smooth mercerized cotton. It shows stitches clearly, holds the petal shapes and resists stretching under the strand’s weight. The quantities below assume about 50 g / 115 m per ball.

  • Cobalt blue: 800 g / 1,840 m (16 balls). One strand uses about 45 g / 104 m.
  • Butter yellow: 850 g / 1,955 m (17 balls). One strand uses about 47 g / 108 m.

Both totals include a margin of roughly 10–13% for test pieces, tails and dye-lot safety.

Tools:

  • 3.5 mm (E-4) crochet hook
  • Polyester fiberfill, about 150 g for 240 beads
  • Large-eye blunt needle or bodkin for threading the cord
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Stiff card 3.5 in (8.9 cm) wide, for the tassels
  • Scissors, blocking mat and rust-proof pins
  • Curtain rod at least 1 in (2.5 cm) in diameter

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • sc2tog: single crochet 2 together
  • MR: magic ring
  • sp(s): space(s)
  • st(s): stitch(es)

Special stitch: petal valley sc2tog. Insert the hook in the last sc of one petal, yarn over and pull up a loop. Insert the hook in the first sc of the next petal, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops. This pinches the valley between the two petals.

Gauge and Checkpoints

Gauge: 20 sc and 22 rows = 4 in (10.2 cm) in sc worked flat.

Before you make the rest, crochet one flower, one diamond and one bead and block them. Each strand has 29 crocheted pieces, so a small size error adds up quickly along its length.

Flower checkpoints (diameter):
– After Round 2: 1.75 in (4.4 cm)
– After Round 3: 2.25 in (5.7 cm)
– After Round 4: 2.75 in (7.0 cm)
– After Round 5: 3.75 in (9.5 cm)
– After Round 6: 4 in (10.2 cm)

Diamond checkpoints (per side):
– After Round 1: 1 in (2.5 cm)
– After Round 2: 1.6 in (4.1 cm)
– After Round 3: 2.25 in (5.7 cm)
– After Round 4: 2.6 in (6.6 cm)
– After Round 5: 3 in (7.6 cm)

Bead checkpoint: 1.25 in (3.2 cm) tall after stuffing.

If your pieces come out too big, go down one hook size. If they come out too small, go up one hook size. Don’t change the stitch counts, because the petal and border math depends on them.

Flower Motif

Make 7 per strand.

Round 1 (blue): Make a MR. Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 11 dc in the ring and join with sl st to the top of ch-3. Pull the ring closed. (12 dc)

Round 2 (blue): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the same st, then 2 dc in each st around. Join. (24 dc) Fasten off.

Round 3 (yellow): Join the yellow in any st. Ch 1, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * 11 more times. Join to the first sc. (36 sc)

Round 4 (yellow): Ch 1, sc in the same st, ch 4, skip 2 sts, sc in next st; repeat from * 10 more times, then ch 4, skip 2 sts and join to the first sc. (12 sc and 12 ch-4 sps)

Round 5 (yellow): Sl st into the first ch-4 sp. In each ch-4 sp around, work (sc, hdc, 2 dc, tr, 2 dc, hdc, sc). Join to the first sc. (12 petals × 9 sts = 108 sts) Fasten off.

The tr at the center of each petal makes the rounded peak. The sc at each end of a petal sits low, which forms the valleys between petals.

Diamond Motif

Make 7 per strand.

Round 1 (blue): Make a MR. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in the ring, ch 2, 3 dc in the ring, ch 2; repeat from * 2 more times. Join to the top of ch-3. (12 dc and 4 ch-2 corner sps)

Round 2 (blue): Sl st across to the first corner sp. Ch 3, then (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same sp, ch 1. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp, ch 1; repeat from * 2 more times. Join. (24 dc, 4 corner sps, 4 ch-1 sps)

Round 3 (blue): Sl st across to the first corner sp. Ch 3, then (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; repeat from * 2 more times. Join. (36 dc: 9 dc per side, plus 4 corner sps and 8 ch-1 sps) Fasten off.

The ch-1 gaps between the 3-dc clusters form the open blue lattice.

Bead

Make 15 per strand. Work in a continuous spiral and move a marker up each round. To change color, finish the last st of the old color with the new color.

  • Round 1 (blue): 6 sc in a MR. (6)
  • Round 2 (blue): 2 sc in each st. (12)
  • Round 3 (yellow): Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st 6 times. (18)
  • Round 4 (yellow): Sc in each st. (18)
  • Round 5 (blue): Sc in each st. (18)
  • Round 6 (yellow): Sc in each st. (18)
  • Round 7 (yellow): Sc in next st, sc2tog 6 times. (12) Stuff firmly.
  • Round 8 (blue): Sc2tog 6 times. (6) Fasten off, leaving a 6 in (15.2 cm) tail. Weave the tail through the front loops of the last round and pull it closed.

This gives a blue cap, a yellow band, a blue middle stripe, a yellow band and a second blue cap. The magic ring and the closed end sit at opposite poles, and that’s where the cord will pass through.

Tassel and Cord

Tassel (make 1 per strand): Wrap blue yarn 20 times around the card. Slide a 10 in (25.4 cm) piece of blue under the top loops and tie it tightly. Cut through the bottom loops. Wrap yellow yarn 6 times around the tassel 0.5 in (1.3 cm) below the tie, then knot it and hide the ends inside. Trim to an even 3.5 in (8.9 cm).

Cord (make 1 per strand): With blue, chain until the chain measures 86 in (218.4 cm) when slightly stretched. Sl st in the back bump of each ch across. Fasten off, leaving 6 in (15.2 cm) tails.

Make All Pieces

Per strand: 7 flowers, 7 diamonds, 15 beads, 1 tassel, 1 cord.

Full curtain (16 strands): 112 flowers, 112 diamonds, 240 beads, 16 tassels, 16 cords.

Work in batches, for example all the blue flower centers at once. Batching keeps your tension even and cuts down on color changes.

Strand order (top to bottom):

[Loop 2 in]
[Bead]
[Flower] [Bead] [Diamond] [Bead] <- repeat unit, x7
[Tassel 3.5 in]

Panel layout (front view):

Rod: ==S1==S2==S3==S4==S5==S6==S7==S8==
      |<-- 4.5 in (11.4 cm) centers -->|

Make the second panel the same way.

Joining

You join the pieces by threading them onto the cord and tacking them in place. You don’t stitch the motifs to each other.

  1. Hanging loop: Fold the top 4 in (10.2 cm) of the cord back on itself and sew it securely. The loop hangs 2 in (5.1 cm) deep once it’s around the rod.
  2. Top bead: Thread the cord onto the bodkin. Pass it through a bead from the magic-ring pole to the closed pole, then slide the bead up to the loop.
  3. Flower: Pass the cord from front to back through the ch-1 tip sp of one petal (petal 1). Run it down the back of the flower and bring it out to the front through the tip sp of the opposite petal (petal 7). Tack the cord to the back of Round 2.
  4. Bead, diamond, bead: Add a bead. Pass the cord from front to back through the top corner sp of a diamond, run it down the back and bring it out through the bottom corner sp. Tack it at the center, then add another bead.
  5. Repeat Steps 3–4 until the cord holds 7 flowers and 7 diamonds.
  6. Tassel: Push the end of the cord into the tassel head. Tie it to the tassel’s top tie, then sew through the head twice.

Stitch-to-stitch logic: Each piece meets the next one directly, a petal tip or diamond corner touching a bead pole, so no cord shows between pieces. Tack each bead to the motif above it with two small stitches so nothing slides.

Tension: Keep the cord snug but not tight. A tight cord makes the flowers cup forward and shortens the strand.

Size checkpoint: One repeat unit is 4 + 1.25 + 4.25 + 1.25 = 10.75 in (27.3 cm), and seven units come to 75.25 in (191.1 cm). Add 2 in (5.1 cm) for the loop, 1.25 in (3.2 cm) for the top bead and 3.5 in (8.9 cm) for the tassel, for a total of 82 in (208.3 cm). Hang and measure your first strand before you make the next one.

Border

Work the borders on each motif before assembly. Border gauge is the same as the main gauge: 20 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm).

Flower Round 6 (blue outline): Join the blue in the hdc of any petal. Sc in hdc, sc in next 2 dc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in tr, sc in next 2 dc, sc in hdc, petal valley sc2tog over the last sc of this petal and the first sc of the next petal; repeat from * 11 more times. Join and fasten off.

Count: 84 sc worked one into each existing st + 12 extra tip sc + 12 sc2tog = 108 sts, plus 12 ch-1 tip sps (9 sts per petal).

Why it works: Each sc2tog uses up the 2 valley sc between petals, and the extra tip sc replaces that stitch. The total stays at 108, so the outline lies flat. The valley dips in and each tip gets a neat point.

Diamond Round 4 (yellow): Join the yellow in any corner sp. Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in the same sp. Sc in each dc and ch-1 sp across, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next corner sp; repeat from * 2 more times, then sc in each dc and ch-1 sp across the last side. Join.

Count: 9 dc + 2 ch-1 sps = 11 sc worked one into each, + 2 corner sc = 13 sc per side, 52 sc total, plus 4 ch-2 corners.

Diamond Round 5 (yellow): Sl st into the corner sp. Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in the same sp. Sc in each sc across, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next corner sp; repeat from * 2 more times, then sc in each sc across the last side. Join and fasten off.

Count: 13 sc worked one into each + 2 new corner sc = 15 sc per side, 60 sc total, plus 4 ch-2 corners.

Why it works: At 20 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm), 15 sc measure 3 in (7.6 cm), which matches the side checkpoint. A square with 3 in (7.6 cm) sides stands about 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall when it’s turned on point.

Final Blocking

  1. Weave in all ends, hiding blue ends in blue stitches and yellow ends in yellow stitches.
  2. Soak the flowers and diamonds in cool water, then press out the excess water in a towel.
  3. Pin each flower to 4 in (10.2 cm), with one pin in each petal tip.
  4. Pin each diamond square at 3 in (7.6 cm) per side, with a pin in each corner.
  5. Let everything dry completely. Don’t wet the beads; roll them between your palms to even out their shape.
  6. After assembly, hang each strand overnight so it settles to its final length.

Final Quality-Control Checklist

  • Every flower has 12 even petals and measures 4 in (10.2 cm).
  • Every diamond has 15 sc per side and measures 3 in (7.6 cm) per side.
  • Every bead is firm and 1.25 in (3.2 cm) tall, with no stuffing showing.
  • The stripes on every bead run in the same order.
  • No cord shows between pieces.
  • Each strand measures 82 in (208.3 cm).
  • Each tassel is 3.5 in (8.9 cm) long.
  • The strands hang at 4.5 in (11.4 cm) centers.

Troubleshooting

  • Petals ruffle: Loosen the ch-4 loops in Round 4, or work dc in place of the tr.
  • Flower cups: Round 3 is too tight. Work it again with looser increases.
  • Diamond is lopsided: Check that every corner has exactly (sc, ch 2, sc).
  • Bead shows stuffing: Work the beads with a 3.0 mm hook, and check that they still measure 1.25 in (3.2 cm).
  • Strand is too long: The pieces have drifted apart. Slide them together and re-tack.

Care

Dust the curtain with a soft brush. To wash it, take the strands off the rod, hand wash them in cool water and dry them flat without wringing.

Final Notes

The whole curtain depends on one measurement chain. A gauge of 20 sc = 4 in (10.2 cm) gives 4 in (10.2 cm) flowers and 3 in (7.6 cm) diamond sides. Those give a diamond about 4.25 in (10.8 cm) tall and a 10.75 in (27.3 cm) repeat unit. Seven units, plus the loop, top bead and tassel, make an 82 in (208.3 cm) strand, and eight strands make a 36 in (91.4 cm) panel. Check each link in that chain and every strand will hang evenly.

Happy crocheting!
